Caitlin is selling her JVC HDV camera because she upgraded to a new one. That's as good a reason as any to remix MacAddict’s product shot setup

This is a product shot of the camera using the small handle which comes with it.

Issues: Left it at ISO 1600. Argh!!!

I took some pictures earlier in the day but I was just checking them out and they were pretty crap. So since its 11:15PM I had to quickly scramble and find something at home to take a picture of. After a bit of search I decided to take a picture of the magazines lying on my bathroom floor. I just got a whole shipment of magazines from Aramex so my bathroom floor is just packed from one side to another with magazines. I get a whole variety of magazins, FHM, Esquire, Baseline, Wired, Cargo, Car And Driver, RollingStone, Xbox OFM, Mac Addict, Mac World, CIO Insight, and more. My favorite of-course is WIRED and my second favorite is currently Cargo. Cargo is a pretty cool magazine, its fairly new compared to the rest and its the best magazine out there for guys. Its like cosmopolitan but for men. Every issue is full of product reviews from tech gear to which shampoo is best for your hair. Plus they show you what you can do with your clothes, how to layer your stuff or what shirt to wear on what occasion. Very interesting and very cool.

Today's photo is inspired by this one from macaddict, yesterday I was flipping throught the 365days discussions and found the Copy Cat mini-challenge . That's how I found macaddict photos and decided to do this.

Caitlin is selling her JVC HDV camera. This is a product shot of the camera using the pro XLR microphone mount that comes with it and her Sennheiser microphone and windscreen (which doesn’t). As you can see, her camera is in mint condition.

I lit the setup from below with her LED floodlight and above using my SB-800 in remote mode.

I am a citizen of MacWorld, MacUser, MacLover, and MacAddict in every MacWeek since 1984, if you recall the great legacy Mac magazines' references. I have remained loyal to the Mac even though I love working at Microsoft. (Ironically, in Pakistan I also became a Microsoft user in 1985 or so, when it released Mac software!)

So, this comment which I posted on a Mac news item in March 2023 or so was not based on where I work. It expressed how frustrated I feel as a MacOS user, especially as a Mac desktop user, for literally 40 years.

Like many others, I feel that Apple has become financially incredibly successful but less innovative under the current management. The worst-ever Mac model I ever bought was around 1991, two terribly underpowered Mac II LC II desktops.

The poor OS could not even finish redrawing a folder window if you had a few hundred items saved in a folder which you double clicked on! You literally would have had to do a hard reboot, and start from scratch -- because it would go into that process right on boot-up trying to open previously open windows!

Fast forward nearly four decades -- and that dishonor of being the worst current Mac now belongs to the barely-usable base-model Mac Mini, IMHO. To be fair, every Mac I ever bought has been the toppest-mostest-ofest-thest-linest. You get the idea.

Then, why did I get this low end model? Because, thanks to terrible product management, it was the only one Apple was selling in its stores when I had to get one in an emergency. (What emergency - my top of the line MacBook Pro had gone for warranty repairs a SECOND time for more than 2 weeks! Talk about a decline in reliability also.)

I do not expect the most expensive models to be in stock at all times at any company's stores. But to have the lowest, worst performing, so-called "unified memory" jar of molasses, no-expansion-possible, base model as the only one at all stores even within a 100 miles was just poor product management, or understanding of one's own platform, IMHO.

Sadly, that lack of anything exciting on the original computer which hooked me, the Mac desktop, remains true even now. That is more than one year after I made the snide comment below. What do you think? Doesn't the Mac desktop line need some Apple love .... and innovation?

Thanks to macaddict for sharing his technique with us. I had some fun with this one.

These were not all purchased at the same time. I must have thrown away the box for the shuffle, that is why the product is in there. Also unfortunately I don't have my iWork box from purchase, that would have been a nice addition I think. Well now all of the boxes are gone to recycling heaven.

I'm in the proses of making my second eBook, this time it is about playing with Texture, how to get those vintage or retro kind of look. I will give free texture, so those of you who bought my eBook can follow the tutorial easily.

My first eBook is about color tone, how to play with the tone and get "old school" kind of colors. To those of you who have already bought my 1st eBook will find it easier to follow this Texture tutorial and will get a very good result, simply because, the tone and the texture will go hand in hand to achieve a great result.

Ben (my roommate's cat) loves Apple products.

He sits on my MacBook Pro often, and at times likes to type things like 'fffffffffffffffffffgffgffffffff' and/or turn the volume/screen brightness up/down. Behind him are all the iPods from 1st generation to the latest 80gig video iPod. No Shuffle, though.

Saturdays I work overtime, and although I had taken some photos prior to going to bed (at a most nightowlish hour of the night), I wasn't happy with them. I liked the idea in one, but didn't like the result. For a variety of reasons, discouragement, disillusionment, and other dis- sort of attitudes crept in, and I came very close to deciding to discontinue 365. It's been taking up a lot of my time, for one thing. More than I had anticipated. A couple of things changed my mind: one was that I had stumbled upon the photostream of a gent (a fellow Mac-addict) who had just finished his second 365, and he was planning to start his third come January 1; another was an image that proved to be the inspiration for the photo you see here. I'm speaking of image #45 in Elsvo's 365 photostream. She had included the lyrics to a song by Creed, as well as a link to a YouTube video of the song. It's been months since I've heard a song by Creed, despite which I absolutely love their music. It got me to thinking about how I might illustrate the same concept and this is the result.

When I was editing the images for this photo, I couldn't help but realize that I hate how my body looks and, once more, I very nearly decided to say the hell with 365... and this even though I knew that all that would be seen would be my mug and shoulders. Creed's song, however, has been stuck in my head because I've been listening to it endlessly. Their lyrics are just... just... satisfying... substantial... significant... and relevant. There's no reason for me to hide, or for me to avoid 365.

FOOTNOTE: I'm a day behind on my posting, but I hope to rectify that soon. Also, with this image, I'm now 1/10th done with 365. :]

decided to give a try to the infamous shaving selfportrait... but I wasn't satisfied with that so I did this Bybee type photo and I'm now claiming the "smoothest shave" where you also get rid of that rough expression and get a happier smile :-) "The Handy Shave" TM

*you can see this is a morning photo: I still have a sleepy face and I didn't noticed I was getting poor light in the photos until too late... This is vacation, I'm allowed to sleep late. lol

A while back I saw an Apple "service center" here in Daegu; I was lost when I visited, so I could never find it.

I asked a friend to help me find it, and he actually directed me to ANOTHER mac "service center" I hadn't known about. Finally I found an old pic or two and did some investigating to find the general vicinity....

So finally I know where the Mac store is! I bought an Apple wired keyboard. I'm especially satisfied with this purchase since now I have korean characters on the keys, making typing with hangul slightly less daunting.

Unfortunately these "service centers" don't actually do service; they forward stuff to the service center (no quotes) in Seoul (see MacAddict's pic). So the damage I inflicted on Frulwinn's computer will have to wait.

An "Apple" in my car!

Blogged in The Woodwork: Hoodman woes.

This is a picture of my two Hoodman H-D70 FlipUp LCD caps. The one on the left broke due to my negligence during a hike in Oregon (the left cover and spring disappeared in the water due under regular use, but I had a nervous habit where I open and close the thing constantly). The one on the right failed on it’s first use and was defectively made near the hinge (or assembled incorrectly).

Strangely the areas that were weak/defective areas on one are rock solid on the other.

I used Dave McNally’s low tech product shot setup to take this photo. I dodged the photo to the whiteground using levels but then reduced the opacity it to return a hint of shadow.

I'm having trouble controlling my brain. It lingers on things it shouldn't. It can't focus on things it should. Part of me wishes I could sit back and enjoy it. The end of the semester (aka: final projects and exams season) is approaching.. If I don't suppress these wandering thoughts and the urge to procrastinate, I'll be in trouble in many areas of my life.
