Hispano HA-1112-M4L Buchon “White 9″ (G-AWHH)

•Aircraft Type: Hispano HA-1112-M1L “Buchon”

•Operator: Air Leasing Ltd

•Year of Manufacture: 1958

•Powered by: Rolls Royce Merlin 500/45

•Colour Scheme: Luftwaffe “White 9″ Uffz Edmund Roβmann, September 1941

The “Buchon” is essentially a Messerschmitt Bf109 fitted with a Rolls-Royce Merlin engine. The Luftwaffe-manned Condor Legion left around 40 Bf109B/E’s for the Spanish Air Force to use. Furthermore 200 Bf109G’s were license built in Spain from 1943 onwards. After the war relations between Spain and the West improved which led to the sourcing of the powerful Rolls Royce Merlin engine. The combination of the ex-German airframe and British power plant proved to be successful and the first prototype flew in 1954.

This aircraft, with serial number 145, was constructed in Tablada Seville in 1958 and fitted with a late spec Merlin engine. It served with the Spanish Air Force with serial number C4K-105 until 1965. The aircraft was used, along with many others, for the filming of “The Battle of Britain” in 1968. After the completion of the filming the aircraft was shipped to Texas where it remained untouched in storage until 2015. The aircraft was then shipped to the UK by Air Leasing LTD in 2017 for restoration.

It carries the colors of the Bf109 of Edmund Roβmann who was one of the most respected leaders in JG52, ‘Paule’ flew in the Battle of Britain before transferring to Russia. In July 1943 he landed behind enemy lines in an attempt to rescue a fellow pilot but was captured by the Russians. He had scored 93 victories, and been awarded the Knight’s Cross.

Hispano HA-1112-M4L Buchon “White 9” (G-AWHH)

The Hispano HA-1112-M1L “Buchon” is a licence built ME109 G produced by Hispano in Spain in the 1950’s. The “Buchon” is fitted with a late spec Rolls Royce Merlin, rather than the DB605 of an ME109. This installation gives the aircraft tremendous reliability still maintaining the fantastic looks and performance of the ME109.

This aircraft, serial number 145, was constructed in Tablada Seville in 1958 and served with the Spanish Air Force as serial number C4K-105 until 1965. The aircraft was resurrected from storage, along with many others, for the filming of “The Battle of Britain” in 1968. After the completion of the filming the aircraft was shipped to Texas where it remained untouched in storage until 2015.
