De Fortuin :
De Fortuin is een historisch pand in Lier, in de Belgische provincie Antwerpen. Het pand aan de Binnennete is sinds 1980 een beschermd monument.
Het gebouw ligt op het Felix Timmermansplein, vroeger het "messenstraatje" genoemd, omdat het ambacht messenslijpen er geconcentreerd was. Het 17e-eeuws gebouw dateert uit 1672, en wellicht gebouwd als opslagplaats aan de kade van de toen nog bevaarbare Kleine Nete. Wat nu de vensters zijn met houten buitenluiken, waren toen open ingangen, of toegangen met een naar binnendraaiend luik, met katrol voor laden en lossen van goederen. Ook de indrukwekkende balkenstructuur op arduinen pijlers duidt erop dat het gebouw op zijn vier bouwlagen zware lasten moest kunnen dragen. Onder meer brouwers, kolen- en graanhandelaars waren eigenaar. Begin 20e eeuw was er een limonadefabriek in gevestigd.
Met de steun van de provincie Antwerpen kocht de stad Lier het historische pand in 1911. Het werd vooral gebruikt als magazijn. Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog stond het gebouw leeg en wat te verkommeren. In 1962-1965 werd het pand grondig gerestaureerd, onder leiding van architect Richard De Bruyn. Hierbij werd het gebouwd wat "geromantiseerd", onder meer de openingen aan de waterkant werden wat symmetrischer geschikt en voorzien van rood-witte (de stadskleuren) luiken met Vlaams zandlopermotief. En op het geknikte zadeldak met opklimmende dakvensters prijkt in de nok het beeld van de godin Fortuna, voorgesteld met wimpel en rad. Het centrale interieur werd gesierd met een vergulde kroonluchter, gesmeed door de Lierse kunstsmid Louis Van Boeckel.
Het werd door de stad in pacht gegeven voor het uitbaten van een horecazaak (met een drijvend terras op de Nete). Na jaren leegstand besliste de stad in 2012 om het pand te verkopen. Na renovatiewerken ging het in 2016 opnieuw open als restaurant .Nu (2020) is de benedenverdieping leegstaand (geen restaurant meer) en de verdiepingen zijn 2 woningen.
De Fortuin
De Fortuin is a historic building in Lier, in the Belgian province of Antwerp. The building on the Binnennete has been a protected monument since 1980.
The building is located on the Felix Timmermansplein, formerly called the "knife street", because the craft knife sharpening was concentrated there. The 17th-century building dates from 1672, and may have been built as a warehouse on the quay of the then navigable Kleine Nete. What now are the windows with wooden exterior shutters were then open entrances, or entrances with an inward opening hatch, with a pulley for loading and unloading goods. The impressive beam structure on the bluestone pillars also indicates that the building had to be able to carry heavy loads on its four floors. Brewers, coal and grain traders, among others, were owners. In the early 20th century, a lemonade factory was located in it.
With the support of the province of Antwerp, the city of Lier bought the historic building in 1911. It was mainly used as a warehouse. After the Second World War, the building was empty and a bit of a waste. The property was thoroughly restored in 1962-1965, under the direction of architect Richard De Bruyn. It was built somewhat "romanticized", including the openings on the waterfront were arranged more symmetrically and fitted with red-white (the city colors) shutters with a Flemish hourglass motif. And on the kinked gable roof with ascending roof windows, the ridge adorns the statue of the goddess Fortuna, depicted with pennant and wheel. The central interior was decorated with a gilded chandelier, forged by the Lierse blacksmith Louis Van Boeckel.
It was leased by the city for the operation of a catering business (with a floating terrace on the Nete). After years of vacancy, the city decided in 2012 to sell the property. After renovation works, it reopened in 2016 as a restaurant. Now (2020) the ground floor is vacant (no restaurant anymore) and the floors are 2 houses.

Europe's newest car museum Squadra Abarth & Rally Collection opened just two weeks ago in Lier, Belgium. From my home it is a little over an hour by car and is there a better way to kickstart your weekend then by checking out at a bunch of old automobiles? I think... no! It opens at 10:00am. I was there at 10:00am. Out at 13:00 hours. Is it good? Yes. Yes it is.

I like to congratulate the Kingdom of Belgium and the continent of Europe wih this great achievement. You may drink a can of Fernandezzz Super-Pineapple (the offical soda of the Club of Automobile Museum Connoisseurs).
Collection is good, presentation is great. 150 automobiles, beautiful new 9 level concrete building but it has lots of wood which gives it a bit of warmth. It is very boxy and has 70s elegance. Lots and lots of natural light and no barriers around the automobiles, you can walk around them. I love, love, love that! Lots of space too. I'm not too sure about the layout (the location of the cars on he different floors) but they just opened, they'll figure it out. Little shop and café on ground floor. Parking is free but entrance is a steep at a freaking €19! That is an amount where you think: 'yo, this better be good'. But it is! Go and see it.
