I've not been to Nupend Wood for a few weeks since the bluebells had finished. I'd decided first to have a look at Common Hill reserve close-by. Common Hill is a small pasture of 2-3 acres just outside of Fownhope, Herefordshire. As I had hoped, lots of common spotted orchids were in bloom. The reserve is managed by Herefordshire nature trust as is Nupend wood, both lie along the River Wye trail. The trust lay corrugated sheet in parts of the meadows to give shelter for local reptiles and I always hope for a suprise when I lift one of these. To my delight the site at Common hill revealed a wonderful grass snake, and a slo worm. Both were close to one another and it occured to me that they must not pose a threat to one another and the grass snake dosn't consider the sloworm as a meal. Anyway that was my first grass snake and it was engaging to see his eyes focused on me and his tongue tasting the air. Wonderful.
My next visit was to Nupend wood to look for the Stinking Iris, hopfully in bloom. And yes, the Iris are blooming and I hope will be around for a few weeks. I walked up the lane to the pastures at Nupend, lots of birdboxes along the way in the surrouding woods. I wonder why there are so many types. Walking through the pastures my eyes were taken by the sight of Greater butterfly orchids in flower. I'd not expected any here and where I had hoped to find some, Joans Hill Farm, there were none, at least where I looked. Sometimes it's easy to miss things but once an eye focuses, more just pop up. Under the corrugated at Nupend were three or more slo worms. No grass snakes this time. I will post more images as time allows.
Just saw Lié and Screature in Sacto tonight....fantastic and authoritative bands! Well, I already knew that about Screature. But this was my first time hearing Lié. Not unlike their fellow Vancouverites White Lung in terms of goddess-head power and propulsion, but they've got more of a hardcore charge to 'em. They're selling cassettes. Somebody put 'em on vinyl!
It must've been 35°C in that basement...enough to melt most Canadian bands.

The city of Dunlap now lies almost deserted. A few houses are still inhabited - their yards littered with decades of rusted junk and abandoned cars.
Dunlap is a special place. Unfortunately, it is a place which I find very sad indeed.
It was once a black town - part of the "Exoduster" movement of the late 19th century when Black people from the deep south moved into Kansas to found all black towns to find more fair treatment and better lives.
This church was the focal point of their community. It thrived for many decades, despite pressure from a Ku Klux Klan chapter in Council Grove just to the north. In the end, it was the abandonment of the railroad line - which also doomed the nearby town of Bushong - which spelled the end for Dunlap after WWII.
What affects me most about this place was in trash cans out back. Never emptied and nearly sealed, they preserved some of the study material from the church's final day on August 11, 1946.
Along with the Biblical lesson was the following passage listed as a topic of discussion for the day: "Following the close of World War II, indications are that there are many forms of oppression remaining. On every hand we hear and read of the struggle and uses of force, diplomacy and economic measures to restrain nations, countries and races from obtaining the so called "Four Freedoms," upon which it was declared, the war was being waged. Many nations of the world continue to oppress others.
In America the class and economic struggle between groups, races, etc. are all evidences of modern forms of oppression."
With that, the last of the congregation left that day, never to return. It appears that an owner afterward used this sacred place as a barn...
Let us all hope that someday those words of half a century ago will not still be relevant. The fight to end oppression here and around the world must always continue.
Lier is a Belgian city located in the province of Antwerp. The city is said to have been founded in the 11th century. In 1212, the Duke of Brabant Henri I granted an urban charter to the inhabitants. The fourteenth century was a period of prosperity for the city: construction of a cloth hall in 1367, a belfry in 1369 and a second rampart in 1389. The prosperity of the city was based on the drapery industry and on the existence of a cattle market, which had been granted to it by the Dukes of Brabant.
About Linjiang Night Market
The area around the Linjiang Street Night Market was traditionally known as “Muddy Bottom” because of its soft soil and low-lying topography. It was already inhabited during the Qing Dynasty, but as recently as 1912 was still considered off the beaten track. In 1954 the city government built Tonghua Street, which quickly attracted merchants as well as an influx of Hakka families, and the area rapidly developed into an important commercial center.
During the 1970’s the city government put an end to the floods that plagued the area, and businesses began to concentrate along the stretch of road from Linjiang Street to Tonghua Street, where the night market currently operates. This night market is famous for its food, particularly barbecued sausage. Other highlights include the Taiwanese and Japanese restaurants along Tonghua Street, as well as eel noodles, fried rice noodles, and other made-to-order dishes. Linjiang is one of the few official night markets operating in a residential area, and stays open later than any other night market in Taipei, not closing until 2 or 3 AM.
Over these 365 days there certainly will be a few different beers shared. The first is Velvet Lies American IPA from New Anthem Beer Project out of Wilmington, NC.
