It was great to be back in Frankfurt, an airport I haven't visited for the best part of 9 years and always wanted to make a return not only for the traffic it sees on a daily basis, but just how easy and spotter friendly the airport is.

The whole purpose of returning back to Frankfurt was to see Lufthansa and their Boeing 747 fleet which are all based here; they are one of the few remaining airlines still to operate the venerable jumbo jet in commercial passenger service. Whilst the Boeing 747-400s remarkably continue to remain in service, their days are almost certainly numbered if and when the Boeing 777-9s arrive, whilst the Boeing 747-8s will continue for the foreseeable future remaining Lufthansa's flagship long-haul aircraft.

Lufthansa has been operating the Boeing 747-8s for over a decade now when the first example arrived back in mid-2012, with the last example arriving 3 years later in mid-2015. The penultimate Boeing 747-8 delivered, D-ABYT is certainly special as she carries Lufthansa's second major livery design dating from 1967, a livery she has carried since new and does not look set to lose anytime soon, still looking remarkably fresh nearly 10 years on.

Currently, Lufthansa operates 27 Boeing 747s, which includes 8 Boeing 747-400s and 19 Boeing 747-8s.

Alpha Bravo Yankee Tango is one of 19 Boeing 747-8s operated by Lufthansa, delivered new to the flag-carrier on 20th March 2015 and she is powered by 4 General Electric GEnx-2B67 engines. She has carried Retro 1976 livery since new and was originally named Köln which only lasted until September 2015 before being removed and transferred to another Boeing 747-8.

The so-called 'Intercontinental' as Boeing called the 747-8 passenger version, as if the 747s before it had not been intercontinental! I think only Lufthansa now operates the type for passegers (with possibly Korean Air).

A Lufthansa Boeing 747 landing at YVR. This was the first 747 that I'd seen in two years. Last one I saw was on a cloudy March day in 2020 just two weeks before the Pandemic was declared. Many airlines that were still flying the 747 started rapidly retiring them after COVID hit. I honestly thought the one I saw that day would be the last I'd ever seen. Fortunately it wasn't. Lufthansa has started flying their 747s again and they're back on the route from Frankfurt to Vancouver. Hopefully I'll see a few more before they fly for the last time.

Official LUFTHANSA postcard from Germany / Deutschland, featuring classic jetliner DOUGLAS DC-10 with tail number D-ADCO

We love a retro-jet more than anyone, and certainly Lufthansa have a habit of bringing back old colour schemes... So, let's head back to the beginning as this is an adaptation of Lufthansa's first livery dating from 1954 until 1960 when the first passenger jets arrived on scene.

The original livery is very different to today's Lufthansa livery, euro-white with grey underbelly but the crane has remained intact, engulfed around yellow on the tail which is mainly blue.

Once upon a time, 2 Airbus A321's wore this colour scheme, Romeo X-Ray which gained the livery in 2005 to celebrate the 50th anniversary since Lufthansa was founded but has recently been repainted back into Lufthansa's standard colours in 2014. Delta Victor has carried this livery since brand new in 2012 and is based at Frankfurt.

Lufthansa's short-haul fleet largely comprises of the Airbus A320 family which include 30 Airbus A319's, 52 Airbus A320's and 64 Airbus A321's (20 on the A321-100 and 44 on the A321-200). Currently, Lufthansa have a number of the A320 family on-order, 28 Airbus A320ceo's, 61 Airbus A320neo's plus 60 options between them and 40 Airbus A321neo's.

Delta Victor was delivered new to Lufthansa in December 2012 and she is powered by 2 IAE V2533-A5 engines.
