If you've lived in Florida long then you are familiar with these. The Lovebug (Plecia nearctica). Once they leave their larval stage they quickly seek out a mate and do the hanky panky. The male and female remain coupled for two to three days, even in flight, until the female lays her eggs. The females average lifespan is two to three days, the males is a bit longer. They emerge in large groups in some regions, thousands, perhaps millions. If you have ever encountered them on the highways while driving you know they will cover the front of your vehicle with their destroyed bodies as you plow through them. They plaster your windshield until there is no choice but to pull over and clean it in order to be able to see to drive. Even worse, within hours their decaying bodies become acidic enough to eat through the paint on your car or truck.
my little buddy... when I am staying in Trout Lake, and take him with me... then I have 2 cats and 1-2 dogs tagging along on my walks to the creek!

did anyone else see selena gomez in the audience during the show? they showed her when she was cheering when codey went throught to next week, making it seem like she was there for codey. i was like you're not fooling us selena, we know you're here for nick.
A pair of Tortoise Shieldbugs in cop at Woodham Fen - excited to see these as this is my first sighting of a Tortoise Shieldbug!
The Tortoise Shieldbug (Eurygaster testudinaria) is a large bug that is now locally common in southern Britain and Ireland. It likes damp habitats with rushes and sedges, including woodlands, wetlands and brownfield sites. It feeds on grasses.
Looks like Herbie made it to Brookside in Tulsa. Herbie was The Love Bug from Disney movies in late 60s, only this is a newer VW model with all the Herbie decals.
At first I thought it was a pair of lovebugs, but then I saw the red under the wing. Now I have no idea what kind of bug it is. Anyone know?

When the right dog comes along...
Yes, we've adopted a new dog. Please allow me to introduce you to Meisha!
As you may (or may not) know we had to remand Poppy, turns out she didn't like men at all:

After turning her back in I sent a text to my daughter (who lives in Washington State) to tell her what had happened and she texted back with "How about this dog" and sent a picture of Meisha.
My daughter was dogsitting for her neighbors who were fostering Meisha and were looking to find her a forever home. I texted back and said she would be great if she was in Arizona and we'd sure take her in. I then showed Meisha's picture to NIccy and said "How about this dog" and told Niccy her story, repeating that if she was down here in Arizona and not up in Washington...
Well, Niccy immediately jumped on the Internets and started looking at airline prices to get her shipped down to us. She found out that we could get it done but it was expensive and there was a lot of paperwork. That's when Divine Intervention stepped in and saved the day.
It seemed that my ex-wife who also lives in Washington was going to be coming down to Phoenix to visit with some of her relatives and she volunteered to bring Meisha down with her!
Just $125 for a seat ticket and a veterinarian's certificate of health later and Meisha was on her way to Arizona. I drove to Sky Harbor Airport in Phoenix and picked her up last Thursday!
Meisha is a 10 year old Pomeranian mix and we're pretty sure she's mixed with Corgi. She has Pom features but her body is stout like a Corgi which means that we don't have to worry about the luxating patella problem that most Poms seem to get. She's probably 20 pounds in weight but she carries it well. Definitely a lovebug and will do almost anything for a scratch which there are plenty of here. She seems to have more of the Corgi temperament so we don't think she's got the Pom craziness that they all seem to have and she hasn't tried to chew my hand off yet so I think she's going to work out just fine!
UPDATE!
We've found out that this little girl does have some bad knees and hips unfortunately. Poms are known for luxating patellas and Corgis suffer with hip dysplasia so long walks for her are out of the question. Our plan is to get a pet pram so that she can still join in on our adventures.
Look for me in the "J's". This was from a sign at a local flower/garden centre. This weekend (called the May 2/4 in Ontario) is the first weekend when it is usually considered safe to put plants in the ground, as the killing frosts are believed to be over. In case you were unaware, My last name is "Herb". And, yes, pretty sure I've heard every "herb", "Herbie the Lovebug", spice, etc.joke in the book. And, yes, we DO say the "H".

Cape May Warbler ~ (Setophaga tigrina)
As spring migration in Florida winds down, another season is beginning. Lovebugs are back in Florida (as the front of my car could dramatically demonstrate). My camera caught this intersection of seasons when a female Cape May Warbler took notice of an unappetizing lovebug as it floated by.

I can't explain it, it just feels more "understated" and less "aggressive" than Beetles from the late 1960s and 1970s (and more recently, from Latin America).
