The Soho Loop turns right off the Birmingham Mainline Canal. I take it regularly on my way to and from the city centre to home in Handsworth. The towpaths are good cycle tracks, improved by the Canal & River Trust. Oscar often runs beside me, safely off the road.

"Western Hemlock Looper. The first known record of extensive tree-killing by a forest insect in the western United States involved the western hemlock looper, Lambdina fiscellaria lugubrosa (Hulst).... A subsequent outbreak killed 200 million board feet (bd ft) of hemlock in Pacific and Grays Counties, Washington from 1929-1932. Losses in Pacific County were reduced in 1931 through the first airplane dusting experiment attempted against a forest defoliator in the western United States (Keen 1932). Keen was involved with the operation and voiced his concern in a letter to Craighead (13 July 1931) regarding toxicity of the calcium arsenate contained in the dust:
'In connection with the airplane dusting project, we are naturally experiencing some criticism from people who object to having poison scattered around in wholesale lots for fear of killing off the wildlife and even domestic animals. I have tried to get some information from the local Boards of Health as to what constitutes lethal doses of calcium arsenate for birds, mammals and humans but with very little success...'"

The car in the left lane was one of those that camp out at about 1 mph below the speed limit and won't move over. I was in the center lane and slowly overtaking him and somebody else was in the far right lane but had been sitting about a half car length behind me for miles - which annoys the crap out of me because we're not in the freakin' Blue Angels. I realized an AZ State Trooper had rolled up behind the lane hog but the guy still wouldn't move over. I decided to force my flying partner to back off so I could move over and let the trooper pass and then life was all good again.

This was a fantastic loop! Made even better with Sandy and Glen from the Coastal Mountain Sporthaus as my guides. About 40 miles, most all of it gravel... Creeks, river, views. Wow!
I rarely see the Maned Wolf when I visit but this day was different. As we were standing there, it stepped out of it's den from the far side of the enclosure, strolled up toward us and then looped around and walked right back in!

Tobacco Looper, Chrysodeixis argentifera a species of Noctuidae. Como NSW Australia, January 2012.
Chrysodeixis caterpillars have two pairs of abdominal legs; taper towards the head; are green or blue green; arch the middle part of the back and move with a looping motion. When disturbed they move the forward portion of the body about in wide sweeping arcs.
Specifically, Chrysodeixis argentifera caterpillars have two longitudinal white stripes on the back and a row of body hairs with dark coloured bases along each side of the body.
