Chicago is considered one of the world’s financial capitals with its involvement in commodity trading. The City’s downtown core reflects this financial transfer both in terms of the interconnection of the central business district and its skyline.

Figure 6 illustrates Chicago’s downtown core.

The downtown core of Chicago is also known as the ‘Loop.’ This name refers to the elevated subway cars that circle the area. From an urban form perspective, the Loop not only encloses the central business area but also distinguishes building forms which it is close proximity to. For example, while the elevated subway platforms were built in 1970s yet subsequent high-rise buildings within the Loop have since been built to physically overshadow the elevated platform. These buildings attract affluent tenants and serve to distinguish the area from other aspects of the City.
