The early 1990s Hemlock Looper kill is still plainly evident along the McBride to Purden Mountain stretch 20 years later with the dead hemlock and cedar snags looming as a stark reminder of the swath it cut out of the forest. When the adults emerged, driving at night was like being in a blizzard because of the moth density. June 21, 2012.

The LOOP sees very little of Epping Forest, which is a great pity. This green lung of ancient forest extends from the north east of London right out into the Essex countryside. The LOOP from Gilwell Park to Chingford is a delightful section - I just wanted more of the same!

JOE GARAGIOLA:

 

Joseph Henry Garagiola grew up on Elizabeth Street in the St. Louis neighborhood called The Hill. Signed at 16 by Branch Rickey, Garagiola played for the Cardinals in five seasons, including the 1946 championship year. After his pro career ended in 1954, he joined St. Louis radio station KMOX and broadcast Cardinals games the next year. After moving to the Yankees, Garagiola called baseball for NBC for 27 years. Two stints with the "Today Show" capped his illustrious broadcast career. A 1973 winner of television's Peabody Award, Joe Garagiola entered the broadcasters' wing of the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1991.
