Holy Trinity, Sloane Street, London

Completed in 1907, the architect was JD Sedding. Pevsner called it the outstanding London example of the Arts and Crafts Movement, Betjeman considered it the Movement's cathedral. Seventeen years in the making, the church is home to a large collection of exquisite fittings and fixtures in glass, wrought iron, beaten copper and gold leaf. A vast barn of a building, the nave is the widest in London, nine inches wider than the nave of St Paul's Cathedral, which you think can't have been unintentional.

The whole building is focused on the great east window, William Morris's largest commission and largely based on Burne-Jones designs. An extraordinary twelve lights wide, there are 48 panels in the lights and half a dozen more in the tracery above. I am not, as you know, a huge fan of William Morris or Burne Jones, but the result is breathtaking. The clerestory windows are filled in with glass by Christopher Whall, there is more Burne Jones glass in the north windows, and the glass on the south side, which I had read was by Powell and Sons, I saw at once was by his best artist Louis Davis, whose work I love. Unfortunately, the south side of the church is overshadowed by a taller, later building, which blocked out much of the light and made photography of the Davis windows impossible on a day of low winter sunshine.

This is not to mention the Art Nouveau screens, lecterns and lamps. The historian Wayland Young wrote of the church that the effect is of a spacious living room, where boyish glee has laid out most pleasant wrack collected from a sunny seashore, the storms of Victorian soul-searching and the energy of Victorian building spent, both the rational calm and the enthusiasm of the 18th Century gone, the arduous battles of the 17th healed, the great busy landscapes of the Middle Ages all forgotten.

The church is open every day.

~~~ Thank you all for viewing, kind comments, favs and awards - much appreciated! ~~~
I took this photo of a mill building reflecting in a traffic mirror at an intersection as we waiting for the light to change. I was really surprised how clear the reflection of the mill came out. Overall I was pleased with the shot. It was a quick for fun shot I never expected to work out.... but it did. HAPPY!
