Moleskine Covers for iPhone/iPad

Since the announcement of Moleskine's iPad and iPhone case, which is a hybrid concept under the Folio line, I've been seeing different configurations or material use. It is still unclear what the final configuration of these cases will be.

The final design will probably look like those shown on Moleskine's page, which I will be able to verify in a few days when I see the samples. I assume those shown below were prototypes coz it is a lot more logical to have Volant notebooks inside these cases than stickies, considering the fact that the StickNotes is still having trouble with the glue IMHO (the glue residue problem was probably solved but my stickies stacks fell off from the cover on one hand but very hard to pull out one stickies from the stack on the other).

I hope Apple Computer is going to release a smaller sized iPad which should be more portable especially when I tend to buy into the concept of a hybrid case.

An Afternoon of Sticker Mania - Loving Innovations from Seoul

Being exposed to Korean innovations in my last and 4th business-only trips to Seoul is like discovering yet another heaven for stationery. The people I met all possess a strong will to make things better for everybody. Imagine being blown away to meet 15 makers in just 3 days, you can see how things are all clogged up in my brain, talking about post-trip neuro indigestion.

So I took my time during this weekend, playing with all those stickers I found in Seoul, making use of them as much as possible. One of those beautiful stickers maker is Enjoy Everything (www.e2e2.co.kr). They've done awesome works on making stickers sheets readily with nice graphics for everyday use. If you check out their site, you will find several categories of stickers like fabric tapes, PU stickers, embossed stickers and A4 sheets of stickers with various materials, colors and patterns.

I also went to the warehouse of a luggage and cosmetic case maker called EDDAS. They made beautiful cases and I couldn't resist but bought a special leather case from them, which is not available at retail, for my personal use. The leather case sat at home for a week and suddenly I was able to make it really personal by putting on all these stickers I found from Enjoy Everything.

By cutting the PU sheets following the outline of the printed graphics, I was able to enjoy a quiet Saturday afternoon playing with how to personalize my EDDAS leather case.

This evening I've finished the touch up and carried the personalized leather case to go sushi dining, I was rewarded by dozens of prying eyes :)

I also had a meeting with Antenna Shop in Seoul, one of the top sellers in our stores, they've done some colorful PU embossed stickers as well. I'm expecting them to arrive our stores soon. So there will be more stickers available in our stores! Come check them out.

Address entered in the Mérimée database:

Insee code of the municipality: 29053

Approximate address taken from GPS coordinates (latitude and longitude):

1 Rue du Général de Gaulle 29590 Le Faou

Protected elements:

Church (cad. 1999 AE 20): registration by decree of June 3, 1932

History:

The church consists of a nave, a wide double transept, a three-sided apse and gables. To the south, a large porch bears the dates of 1593 and 1613. The bell tower, openwork and elongated, is cushioned by a lantern dome and bears the dates of 1629, 1630, 1634 and 1640.

Periods of construction:

16th century, 17th century

The Saint-Sauveur church was rebuilt between 1544 and 1680 but retained the furniture of the previous church. And some parts are graded. In particular the “snakes” baptismal font, made of Kersanton stone, considered to be of exceptional interest, and a magnificent stone pietà. The stained glass windows recounting the legendary foundation of the parish, the altar of the rosary and the medallions illustrating the "joyful, glorious, painful mysteries", the Saint-Antoine altar with turrets, that of the "four women", the panels with angels and the carved wooden candlesticks from the 17th century... The church contains many treasures!

Logonna Stone

Illustrated explanatory panels (made by the Ar Faou association) evoke the history of the church and its heritage The exterior is also very beautiful: the Logonna stone gives the building a golden hue associated with the Kersanton stone for the statuary elements. You can also see beautiful gargoyles. And the porch protects the wooden statues of the 12 apostles. Finally, the steeple is domed, unlike the other pointed steeples. The church is open every day, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and you can get an explanatory booklet for the visit, at the entrance.

PONY BROWN - My Little Friend, Korean Stationery

My lack of post is only the evidence of more amazing stationery adventures coming up, this time Korean stationery. Yes it was crazily busy to implement yet another successful year of Back To School promotion in city'super/LOG-ON, yes there is the preparation of Xmas 2010 and an upcoming new store in Langham Place in November, but all these melt when I was in Seoul last week looking at the innovations from some of the most creative souls in the world.

PONY BROWN is a new Korean stationery brand only started since 2008. The key character which has no name, gained popularity in our Hong Kong market. According to the creative pair Mrs. Lee the owner and Mr. Oh the designer, the name PONY BROWN is not the name of the character at all, it came from Mr. Oh's birth year zodiac as a horse thus PONY and his love of brown color.

I had a great time spent in PONY BROWN's house, a 2 stories tranquil cat heaven in the middle of Seoul. It has all the elements I love right there, great sunlight, woody, quiet and space to think and relax while connectivity is not a problem at all.

As for why the main character has no name, Mr. Oh told me that the idea is to have people loving the character fuse their life and spirit with the character's attitude, to be bright and positive with attitude. The super cute character has a nick name though, since the series is called "My Little Friend", in Korean language fusioning with English, the character is called "Mylipu" (My Little Pu, "Pu" means friend in Korean).

The most popular items we sell at city'super/LOGO-ON of PONY BROWN is their free diary. They have just released some new post-it and diary stickies which will be in Hong Kong market soon. Lastly, we have worked with PONY BROWN to prepare a super attractive Xmas gift set with very nice packaging for the season, stay tuned!

Midori is releasing a series of new products relating to the popular Traveler's Notebook. In an attempt to create the same aesthetic of the leather notebook, the development team chose to use brass as the material which radiates the same pleasing quality as it ages. I think it is an excellent choice of material, it gives you the feeling of a trusted old friend, give it a little polishing it comes back to a shiny companion.

The brass series includes 12 pieces of numbered clips, a 15cm ruler with raised edge for easy pick up, a solid brass pen case and bullet pen/pencils. These bullet pen/pencils are available in white or brown barrels in addition to the brass ones. The pens have a ring at one end for strap add-on while the pencils have a large eraser instead.

During the Midori private show I visited, I learned that they are preparing for a "Traveler's notebook & company" exhibition to be held in Spiral Market again this year around March/April. I am glad to be invited to contribute some contents for their on-site newsletter in "what's in my bag" style.

The large size Traveler's Notebook is far more popular than the passport size they released last year. To promote the use of the passport size Traveler's Notebook, which can be used as an actual passport jacket with note keeping capability and kept close to your body, Midori is releasing more add-ons such as new refills, rub-on letters and 2 limited edition refills which looks like a real passport. In the limited edition refill package, they thoughtfully included rub-on letters in passport looking font so you can personalize the notebook on the last page like it is a real thing.

Finally, since document envelope with string closure is very difficult to find in Japan, "Kraft envelopes" are created. It gives a crafty way to store your receipts or coasters collected from travels, either use them individually or make them handy by taping them on the notebook refill cover.

Here's my 2 cents about material use. I love the brass application on the hardware (pen case, clip, pen and ruler), while Midori is proud of its range of high quality paper products, application of tougher material on the notebook covers or even envelopes and document holders will add similar aesthetic and durability to this overlooked area. I would recommend to use jean label material in the form of cellulose fibre in combination of leather and paper to create a new range of pleasing products under the Traveler's Notebook collection.

This small guy (around 4cm) is one part of a much bigger Artwork, which is 60cm x 80cm and composed of many more figurines.

What I don't like about hipster PDA is basically because of poor styling and the ugliness of a binder clip. That's why I created mind.Depositor (currently in version 3) and freely downloadable GTD index card templates. However, after repeated attempts to find ways to group these different cards effectively, I finally settled back to using binder clips, except that I was determined to make them look better.

These GTD tabs were finally made about a month ago borrowing the idea from Clip-rite, a company founded by Janet L who grew up in Brazil and later moved to United States. I met her last year in Japan and admire her can-do attitude. Her patented design is simple yet ingenious, solving everyday problem by combining 2 products into 1 (sticky notes and paper clips). Without infringing her patent, I guess, I modified to replace the paper clips with binder clips for my GTD dream set.

It is dead simple, anybody can do it with just a few pieces of scrap leather, cutter and some binder clips. You decide the size and shape of the leather piece, cut a slit in the middle which should be measured to fit the width of your selected binder clip, or any other types of clip you find pleasing. Then open and insert the binder clip through the slit, its done.

I used alphabet stamps to make impressions on the tabs to create 4 different GTD tabs: Next Actions, Projects, Waiting For and Someday/Maybe. In a more refined version, I added stitches and they do look a lot better.

These GTD tabs not only let me bind piles of index cards in groups, they are also handy for pulling the cards out of a storage case, in my case the mind.Depositor 3. I'm so happy to have done this, solved binding and accessibility of index cards in one step. Do try to do it yourself and let me know how it goes, love to hear your feedbacks!

Here comes some stationery porns.

Lazy me did went to ISOT 2010, THE most exciting stationery show in the world IMHO, but I didn't post any report as diligently as Mr. Tadashi Tsuchihashi (土橋 正), who is a professional stationery commentator, writer and published several books and maintains a blog called Pen-info.jp.

(name card holder and albums in cassette tapes outlook, by Artemis)

Tsuchihasi san have just posted a 4 pages long report of the show, featuring things he captured in his short visit. While I was featured on page 4, I figured I should've done something here. So I looked at the pictures I took and found a very different approach to the show. I have a feeling that he sees things more widely and pragmatically, while I tend to be emotional and go with the flow. Simply look at the differences I learned a lot.

This year marks the third year of an interesting event to be held in city'super and LOG-ON. In this concept cafe (particularly in Festival Walk's LOG-ON), you will find:

Stationery and photography travel gears (19th June - 2nd July 2009): Canon, Fuji, Lomo, Moleskine, Midori, KOLO, MT-tapes, LUXE, Kodomo stamps, Staz-on inpads, etc

Travel Talks: 3 different sessions on 20th June 2009 presented by traveler and photographers. Learn how to steal time and write better on your journal, life hack tricks included. Why a trip to Cambodia changed a portrait photographer's view on life and how a traveler's mindset is different from a tourist's. How imagery and text combined can create lasting memory through photo journaling. Only a few days left for registration!

Mini Game with interesting prizes: Follow the instruction on the postcard and go to Festival Walk LOG-ON store, find the hidden message which is a travel quote written by G.K. Chesterton, write it down and submit. You get a chance to win nice gifts from great brands (check out this Flickr photo and move your mouse over to see what they are)

Stamp your notebook/postcard: Yes stamps, bring your notebook or use our postcard. I've made these icons into self inking stamps for your fun: Moleskine, LCA, Travel Cafe logo, fountain pen. They sort of summarized what this event is all about. Also, Designphil (Midori) in Japan made these two stamps for our event too! They are only available in Hong Kong during this period, so collect them while you can!

And finally, special thanks to Lie Fhung from Ztampf.com allowing me to use her great digital scrapbooking graphics on the postcard and backdrop of the event. More photos coming up after setting up the event.

Enjoy!

GLACIER NATIONAL PARK

Going to Hidden LaKe

TAM-LATAM Brasil, Boeing B767-300, landing in Boston Logon Intl Airport (BOS/KBOS), after another flight from São Paulo, in Brazil.

Malapascua Island is a Filipino island situated in the Visayan Sea, located across a shallow strait from the northernmost tip of Cebu Island. Administratively, it is part of the insular barangay of Logon, Daanbantayan Municipality, Cebu Province, the Philippines. Malapascua is a tiny island, only about 2.5 kilometres (1.6 mi) long and 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) wide, and has eight hamlets.

Malapascua became famous fairly recently, only in the early 90s as a dive destination. Prior this, the island was known for its wide white sand beach, known as Bounty Beach; it has also become known for its beautiful coral gardens and excellent local dive spots, as well as further-out sites including Gato Island, Monad Shoal, and Kemod Shoal. Monad Shoal is an underwater plateau where thresher sharks and manta rays can be sighted on a regular basis.

Most of the islanders derive their livelihood from tourism, while some still rely on subsistence fishing and farming.

The name “Malapascua” is said to have been given by some Spaniards whose ship happened to get stranded in the island on Christmas Day, December 25, 1520, due to bad weather. Because of their misfortune of having to spend Christmas away from their comrades and family stuck in a desolate island, the Spaniards called the island Mala Pascua, which literally means “Bad Easter”. From then on the Spaniards and the non-locals would refer to the island as Malapascua, while the local residents insist that their place is called Logon.

Religiously, Malapascua Island or barangay Logon is believed to be the place where the Virgin delos Desamparados made a miracle sometime in 1890 when the island said to have only nine households of the Monteclar, Deogrades, Rosales, Gulfan, Rubio, Bohol and Bruces families. It was said to be a piece of wood that had never burnt. In 1907, the parish priest of Kandaya, now Daanbantayan town, Rev. Fr. Inocentes Maga, baptized it of its name upon the request of the local residents. The size of the image is not the original size and it is said to be growing until present. Devotees from different parts of the country and even abroad are coming during the feast on May 11 and 12 of every year. The chapel was originally made of coconut palm and leaves but at present, it is made of steel and cement because of donations of the devotees for the church’s improvement.
