Southern Memories - in this shot we see a rare view from the cab of vintage 4-SUB unit 4719 approaching Epsom station on service '82' heading for Sutton. The fine L.B.&S.C.R. signal box is clearly in view!cFrom my logbook notes, I jumped on at Bookham and with my great friend Tim Proudman superb50002 managed to cadge a cab ride all the way to Epsom (in driving coach S12778S) transferring to the cushions where we continued on to Sutton :)

We did various units in the morning before heading over to bash the Selsdon for the very last time.

 

Morning Highlights include -

4SUB 4719 cab ride Bookham to Epsom, where we alighted and continued on to Sutton....for

4EPB 5425 cab ride Sutton to Wimbledon ("Wall of Death")

and haulage behind 5763, 5725 on the Selsdon line.

 

We did - Elmers End to Bingham, Bingham to Elmers End, then to Coombe Road and Sanderstead, back to Elmers End, back to Selsdon to Elmers End, back to Sanderstead, and back to Elmers End. This was the last move / last train, formed 5720 and 5209.

 

4-SUB bashing! In the summer of 1983, whilst enjoying my first year as a Geography undergraduate at Kingston Polytechnic, me and my good friends Tim Proudman and the sadly late Llew Griffith spent many happy hours riding around the rails of the Southern Region! One of our top targets was to get some 4-SUB rides before the demise of the class in October 1983. This day was one of those occasions.

 

My bashing friends and I spent some time clearing all the passenger routes on the Southern Region when we were at Kingston Polytechnic back in 1982-1985. During this period, we had many a ride on the old 4-SUB units which were finally withdrawn from service in 1983.

These two slim books were immensely useful at the time, for they detailed every scheduled arrival and departure at London's two busiest airports. They are very nostalgic now as of course virtually every aircraft type is no longer with us, and many of the airlines have disappeared also.

 

I seem to have personalised (defaced?) the covers with some of my stickers :)

Amazing find here, a Ford Granada Scorpio! Currently on SORN and no online MOT history is available, so it has been off the road for at least 17 years! It really did not look too bad considering being sat out in the open for so long, defiantly salvageable, just some faded paint and rust round the wheel arches cosmetically. Last logbook change was on the 5th of December 2011.

Interesting MK1 Escort estate here, although it is an import judging from the left hand drive. Can't be many UK-spec ones left now! Last logbook change was on the 29th July 2021.

This Volvo 480 is immaculate, and I love the pop up headlights. Still carrying its original dealer plates, which look in beautiful condition still! Last logbook change was on the 1st February 2019.

Toola, Somewhere West of the Great Plateau

 

We’ve been out here in the wilderness for at least two weeks. The men have begun complaining, but General Gamzed won’t listen to them. He never appears cold, even when we are slugging through waist high snow. Something about keeping his mind from his body, he said once. Easy to say when you’re a Jedi. The rest of us shiver in our armour and try to keep as close to the heat lamps as possible. Today though, was different. As soon as we got out of the trees, the warm lights of Arkanei came into view, Clearly abandoned by the civilians who had undoubtedly ran when the separatists first attacked the city.

The general made a rare glance back at his troops, and motioned towards the lieutenant. His arm was almost angled diagonally towards his head, towering over the rest of the men. He must have been at least seven feet, probably average for a Lasat of his stature.

“Send the men into the city. Get them warmed up, find rations. We’ll move out in the morning. We cannot get outmarched by those droids.”

I remember this as one of the rare times he had shown a little compassion or interest in our health.

With that, General Gamzed stepped up onto the ridge, and looked out into the frozen tundra.

The lieutenant had disappeared from my side, and I looked back. I watched as his com link chimed and rattled to a start, the blue light of a hooded figure illuminating the dents of his armour. I felt an odd sensation in my mind, like it had suddenly become vacant, open to a new resident.

“Lieutenant Kodiak, execute order 66…”

When approaching the airstrip, all the details become clearer. The landscape becomes human again.

All 80's Renaults are incredibly rare in the UK, and the Fuego is no exception. There is only 19 with MOT on our roads! These have a very stylish design and are very pretty, and I particularly like the blue it is in and those yellow fog lights! It has been very inconsistent with MOT's in previous years, being without one between 2013-2021! Currently has no MOT although it is exempt as it is over 40 years old now but it does have tax. Currently sits at 30,047 miles. Last logbook change was on the 1st of June 2021.

Carrying a Birmingham registration first issued in July 1937, DOH206 is a Bedford WTL. The DVLA records that this vehicle is currently untaxed, its most recent V5C logbook dating from 5/2017. More recent Flickr postings show it to be in a poorer state of repair.

The North Sumatran rail crew led by driver Usman (on the ground right) check their logbook details after arriving at Medan from the port of Blawan (Belawan) with BB30206 and BB30603 and a string of empty palm oil tank wagons on Nov 18, 1992.

 

I have some great stories about riding trains with these two railwaymen during this visit and a visit to Usman's families in nearby villages.

 

Looking at Google Maps, there is now an elevated metro railway running over the top of these tracks.

The items in this photo, I had used religiously, during the my flying career. I carried them in a hand-stitched, black leather flying case, along with other items, such as a 2 D Cell Flashlight, my Pilot Logbook, and books of navigation charts and approach plates, et cetera.

 

The Telex headset was used for communications with Air Traffic Control and to communicate with the Pushback Crew, when they were plugged into the aircraft. For General Aviation aircraft, I used a David Clark headset, which is probably the best headset available. I used a Gentex SPH-4 helmet, when I flew Army Bell Iroquois helicopters.

 

The Jeppesen ProStar electronic Flight Calculator, is about 40 years old and it still works 100% reliably. I used it for preflight and inflight calculations from flying Army helicopters to Boeing 747 and 737 jet aircraft. One of the very unique features I liked about the Jeppesen ProStar was I could arrive at a solution for Track and Distance in Nautical Miles, starting with Latitude and Longitude entires. I could also calculate time from hours: minutes : seconds entries.

 

The Jeppesen ProStar electronic Flight Calculator, Model CR-3 could provide highly accurate calculations for preflight and inflight activities, except for the computations I noted above. I preferred the larger version, because of better accuracy and easier reading, in dimly illuminated cockpits, at night.

 

The Boeing coffee mug was purchased when touring the Boeing 747-400 assembly plant at Everett, Washington, while attending training to become a Captain of Boeing 747-400 jumbo jets. The base of the coffee mug is designed to fit perfectly into the cupholders on the Flight Deck. Oddly, I do not have cupholders on my Mercedes-Benz, but they were thoughtfully provided by Boeing on the 737 and 747 aircraft I flew.

 

And, my Bell & Ross Aviation chronograph is my favorite, because it reminds me the type of clocks fitted to aircraft I had flown, especially early in my career.

 

I served as a Captain, briefly, at Xiamen Airlines.

 

Photographically-speaking, it was a pain in the ass to set the up the various components in the scene. Oddly, though this was photographed using natural light, I merely guessed at the exposure settings.

Here's some additional information on Pan Am "Clipper Munich" from Logbook magazine:

N90906, Douglas DC-4 (Douglas C-54 Skymaster), Clipper Dusseldorf, notes: C/n 27310, originally delivered to the U. S. Army Air Force as a Douglas C-54E-5-DO Skymaster, Serial Number 44-9084, on 4 April 1945. After being transferred to the Reconstruction Finance Corporation later in 1945, it was purchased by American Overseas Airlines on 21 December 1945, and named Flagship Copenhagen. It later went to Pan Am on 25 September 1950, when Pan Am bought American Overseas Airlines. It was first named Clipper Dusseldorf, then Clipper Munich, then Clipper Golden Gate, then Clipper Mermaid, and finally back to Clipper Dusseldorf. Pan Am leased the aircraft to Aerovias Panama Airways for a short time in 1961, registered HP-297. It was returned to Pan Am the same year and withdrawn from use. This Douglas C-54E Skymaster was eventually sold to the Trust Territories Government in 1962, and soon withdrawn from use again. The ultimate fate of this Skymaster is not known.

The flight which normally took two and a half hours lasted all day due to mechanical malfunctions of the aircraft!

Cheffins vintage and classic auction, Sutton -

 

"Chassis No. 143DC35. The Dennis has been stored in open fronted shed for the 15 years immediately following its restoration and has covered a grand total of 7 miles since. Fitted with a Perkins P6 engine coupled to a David Brown 4 speed crash box and PTO, the vendor reports that the vehicle runs and drives well. Originally built for Coote & Warren of Huntingdon and supplied with the original logbook and current V5 document. This is a nicely complete example for shows and rallies."

RAF Museum, Hendon, London, England, UK

 

The RAF Museum at Hendon, based at a wartime aerodrome, is where the exhibits are tightly packed. I had another exciting day out to see planes and the history of flight.

 

• Not all planes made it back to base safely. This is Handley Page Halifax Bomber, W1048 (code TL-S), from 35 Squadron based at Kinloss, Scotland. It was a cold night on the 27th April, 1942 when this machine took off at 2030hrs on its first ever operation. There were only nine hours flying in its logbook, listing just tests and relocation from the factory.

 

Its mission that night, along with 30 other Halifaxes, was to deliver spherical 1,000lb sea mines, rigged to explode under water, to the German battleship, Tirpitz, moored in Fottenfjord, Norway. The plan was to roll the mines down the steep slopes into the water, where they would detonate, causing damage to the ship below the water line.

 

All had gone well, so far, with this plane being first to attack at 0030hrs. The Germans shot at the aircraft as it swooped down at around 200 feet. Bullets ripped into the starboard outer engine and wing fuel tanks, causing a fire. 24 yr old Canadian pilot, Don McIntyre, limped W1048 to a nearby frozen lake to perform a gear-up landing. The crew escaped with only Flight Engineer, Vic Stevens, suffering a broken ankle. He was helped to dry land by the others, but was captured as a prisoner of war. The rest of the crew escaped to Sweden with the help of the Resistance.

 

The plane sank into the lake, where it lay undisturbed until 1973 when it was lifted out of the water, transported to the UK, then assembled for display in the museum in 1982.

Taken at the Wilson Hill Pioneer Cemetery, Bradford West Gwillimbury.

 

"Wilson's Hill Cemetery was donated by James and Mary Wilson, to the United Presbyterian Congregation of Essa, June 26th, 1858.

 

The following historical info is taken from a logbook at the entrance to the cemetery.

 

“Although this property was not deeded to the First Essa Presbyterian Church by the Wilson's until 1858, there were burials for at least a quarter century before that date. The earliest tombstone date that could be found was that of a one year old child (Ellen Sutherland), dated 1839. The last burial was that of William McClain Dinwoody who died in 1957. He was the last surviving son of the first white child born in Essa Twp.

 

The first Essa settlers, the George Dinwoody's and the Thomas Duff's are buried here. The remains of the Duff's were later re-interred in the Aurora Cemetery.

 

The Nevil's plot contains the remains of six children who all died within one week – a grim reminder of the once-dreaded diphtheria.

 

The Harper plot contains the remains of Bert Harper who lost his life in a futile effort to save a life in 1901. A monument to Bert Harper stands in front of the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa.

 

The original entrance to the cemetery was originally off what is now Highway 27. In 1926, the Department of Highways purchased this lower piece of land(the current entrance of the 12th Concession) and deeded it to the Presbyterian Church in Canada.

 

A tomstone bears the name of Hapentobe Hindle. Apparently three brides on a sailing vessel coming to Canada were very pregnant. Bets were made about which would give birth first. It happened to be Mrs. Hindle…..thus the name.”

  

The cemetery was meticulously cared for by Neil J. McBride for many years, until his passing in 1985. A plaque has been erected by his late wife to give thanks for his dedication to preserving the resting place of so many of the areas first pioneers. Although the cemetery is occasionally tended to, mostly it sits forgotten, unseen in its location at the top of Wilson's Hill"

Aviation Memories Continuing the New Year 2020 with something a bit different :)

 

These two pages are in one of my school note books - a useful way of utilising what we called our 'Rough Books' - I was an early adopter of Recycling :)

 

They show runway 23 arrivals as noted by me from the back bedroom and garden of my house in Southall :)

 

We had a full day of 23 that day, and the log runs continuously from 05.45 to 17.05 with 145 arrivals!

Best highlight must be OY-APV a Maersk Air Boeing 720 taking the place of YA-HBA on the Ariana flight :)

So in a mere 3 hours from 14.00 to 17.00 we have:

- Bealine 743 PH-TVI Transavia 737 on lease to BA before their brand new ones arrived

- G-BDMD Air Anglia Pa31 Navajo

- AF950 F-BOJA the original Air France 727 still in old livery [OL]

- KQ614 EI-ASI Aer Lingus 747 on a Kenya Airways flight! Leased at the time

- BR956 G-BDSJ Caledonian 707 - no idea what that was doing away from LGW?

- Cedar Jet201 the callsign of MEA 720 OD-AFS

- Ariana 701 - OY-APV Maersk Air 720 - nice!

- Air Ceylon 787 - A40-VL Gulf Air VC-10 substituting for 4R-ACS the regular 707

 

so quite the variety :)

 

Interesting to note the different callsigns that British Airways used back then:

Speedbird - for long-haul ex BOAC flights

Bealine - for short-haul ex-BEA flights

Shuttle - for the mainly Trident 3 shuttle service (walk on walk off - the original 'no frills' service

Albion - Viscounts and sometimes the BAC 1-11s - these were the ex-Regional flights of Northeast airlines, swallowed up by BEA

and we have Gibair FN- a BA Trident 2 G-AVFN on a positioning flight.

 

I can't believe I logged all the times! Doesn't look like I even had a lunch break - I think I might have been getting a bit obsessive :)
