As I thought this one is on SORN, but it has been with the same owner since 2003! Currently on SORN and without MOT since the 12 of December 2020, I wonder why the owner took it off the road and whether they have any plans to put it back on the road again? It did have a break from being on the road between 2006 and 2014 so I wonder if its in the process of being rebuilt? Sits at around 141,375 miles and the last logbook change was on the 19th of April 2012.

Hout Bay is a seaside suburb of Cape Town in the Western Cape province of South Africa. It is situated in a valley on the Atlantic seaboard of the Cape Peninsula, twenty kilometres south of the Central business district of Cape Town. The name "Hout Bay" can refer to the town, the bay on which it is situated, or the entire valley.

The area was originally made up of two farms, which were slowly subdivided to make way for urban expansion. While still maintaining its rural atmosphere, the area of Hout Bay has more than 5,960 residences inhabited by a population of at least 17,900 people (as of 2011).

From remains found in a cave, we know that people lived in this cave between 100 AD and 500 AD. These people were known as the Late Stone Age people. They had no metal tools or weapons and used stone to make whatever implements they needed. They were gatherers of wild plants, shellfish and the seabirds and animals that were washed ashore. They also hunted and fished using hooks fashioned from bones and nets made from fibrous plants and the skins of animals.

The Khoi-Khoi and Bushmen were descendants of the late Stone Age people. They were called Khoi-Khoi because of the clicking sounds contained within their language. The Khoi-Khoi were also called Strandlopers because they gathered food from the beaches. Some people also referred to them as Kaapmans, Men from the Cape. The Khoikhoi were gatherers, hunters and herders, which meant that apart from gathering and hunting for food, they also possessed large herds of cattle and sheep. They lived in huts made of restio mats tied to a Beehive shape frame made of pliable poles. The Khoi often set up camp in Hout Bay. The names Hotnotshuisie and Oudekraal originated from the days when the Khoi camped in these places. The Khoi traded with the early voyagers from Europe who were on their way to the East and had stopped at the Cape in order to get fresh food and water. The Khoi bartered with these early sailors exchanging cattle and sheep for small pieces of copper, brass and tin.

The first written account of Hout Bay dates to 1607 when John Chapman, masters mate on the English boat, the "Consent" which was becalmed at the entrance to the Bay, was sent in the ship's pinnace at dusk on a chancy venture because Hout Bay was unknown wild country and the time was late afternoon which would make it difficult for him to find the Consent in the darkness.

Recorded in the Rutter (Logbook) by the pilot, John Davis: "Chapman’s Chaunce hath in latitude 34-10 and is a harbour which Leith within the south-west point under a little hill like charring cross (a sculptured memorial of a cross on an ornamental mounting in London) close hanging by the seaside of the S.S.W side of the land " Chapmans Chaunce was the first name given to Hout Bay and it was also the first English name to appear on the maps of Southern Africa.[citation needed]

In 1614 an English sailor records having taken wood from the forest of Hout Bay in order to mend his ship.

When the Dutch established a colony in Table Bay in 1652, a great quantity of good timber was required for construction, shipbuilding and other purposes. There was no large forest in the immediate vicinity of the settlement, mainly because the rainfall was not high enough. It was soon apparent that the colonists would be able to fell wood they needed in the wetter valley that lay on the other side of a low pass (now called Constantia Nek) between the southern end of Table Mountain and Constantiaberg. Van Riebeeck described the forest of Hout Bay as being the finest in the world. It was Van Riebeeck who gave Hout Bay its present name. In 1652 on 22 November Van Riebeeck wrote in his journal about T’ Houtbaaitjen. Since then it has been known as Hout Bay.

In 1662, the year when Jan Van Riebeeck left the Cape, the Boscheuwel road was extended from Kirstenbosch in a rough track over Constantia Nek to Hout Bay.

In 1668 the first permit to cut and saw wood in the Hout Bay forest was granted. In 1677 the first agreement to rent land for farming purposes was signed. In 1681 two farms were established Ruyteplatts and Kronendal.

Earlier this year I was introduced to this hobby and I was instantly hooked A grown up treasure hunt that you can do everywhere!!! WHY WOULD YOU NOT??!!! I've learned a lot, found some friends to take with me and I don't plan on looking back. This hobby is full of adventures and I plan to go on as many as I can!

Depending your location on the row, it can last a while before you receive your meal …

For those who have already been in San Francisco, this view from the sky shows the familiar drawings of the streets.

This one who goes straight up to the sea is Market street.

Note the thick black cloud on the top of the image : the hint of the huge fires who devastated the forests around SF in August 2015.

Pour ceux qui connaissent San Francisco, cette vue du ciel leur est familière.

L'avenue qui file tout droit vers la mer est Market Street.

Vue du ciel, la fumée des incendies qui ont ravagés la région en août 2015 était encore bien visible.

Manhattan Ethymology

The name Manhattan derives from the word Manna-hata, as written in the 1609 logbook of Robert Juet, an officer on Henry Hudson's yacht Halve Maen (Half Moon). A 1610 map depicts the name Manahata twice, on both the west and east sides of the Mauritius River (later named the Hudson River). The word "Manhattan" has been translated as "island of many hills" from the Lenape language.

No, not a San Francisco based jazz musician but rather a view of some Pembrokeshire flora through a persistent January fog as the sun, somewhere on the other side of the murk, sets.

We're Here; minimal...

Tripod-mounted & filter-free & remote-triggered with the IS OFF. The vignette is from the standard Lee filter-holder that clearly gets in the way when the lens is racked out to 400mm. One for the logbook... ;-)

Yesterday, I had my very first wreck dive. It was the wreck of the Salem Express, which sank in 1991 off the coast of Safaga. It was a strange and solemn feeling, knowing the history of the Salem Express, which is considered an official grave site. You can read about the story online, for example on Google.

With that background and awareness in mind, we descended. There were two dives, and the sight of this massive ship was overwhelming — I couldn’t capture in photos what emotions and feelings arose during those two dives. I will make a short video about these two dives, both of which were deep dives recorded at 26 meters in my logbook.

Out of respect for those who still rest within the wreck, I only explored the Salem Express from the outside and did not enter the interior of the ship.

Brand new from Boeing delivered in 1997, took two years to put in this over the top interior..was a phenomenal airplane to fly with the 63,000 lbs CF6s… the longest flight in my logbook was on this airplane in 2001.. 17 hours 38 minutes ..Jeddah to Long Beach CA.. and we still had 2 hours of fuel !!!

Pedro Álvares Cabral is renowned for the "discovery" of the South American Continent, more specifically of Brazil. He commanded the second naval expedition to India, that took place soon after Vasco da Gama's voyage, when -- according to history records -- a storm set the fleet off course, which thus reached the eastern coast of the South American Continent where Brazil is now to be found.

Yet, some historians claim that John II, then king of Portugal, had had previous knowledge of the existence of this continent, keeping this knowledge secret in order to negotiate the Treaty of Tordesilhas with Spain to Portugal's advantage. Pedro Álvares Cabral real mission should have hence been making the previous discovery official. Among other things, the lack of surprise at the discovery in the logbook records is regarded as evidence for their claims.

Belmont has thus very strong ties to Brazil, and this statue was offered to the city by the Brazilian authorities.

I built this one to actually go on my front door and function as a working door knocker. It will screw onto the door but the whole assembly will pop open to reveal the logbook and small swag. It is almost completed, I just need to finish weathering it so it will blend in nicely and look like it has been there for a long time.

Fastnet Rock (Irish: An Charraig Aonair, meaning Rock of Solitude or Lonesome Rock) is a small clay-slate island with quartz veins and the most southerly point of Ireland, 6.5 km southwest of Cape Clear Island (Oileán Chléire) in County Cork, which is itself 13 km (8 miles) from the mainland. It lies in the Atlantic Ocean 11.3 km south of mainland County Cork, at latitude 51.37°N. It rises to about 30 m above low water mark. Study of the documentary record suggests that the name is from Old Norse Hvastann-ey 'sharp tooth island'.

Divided into Fastnet Rock proper and the much smaller Little Fastnet to the south by a 10 m (30 ft) wide channel, it also had the nickname 'Ireland's Teardrop' as it was the last part of the country seen by Irish emigrants to the United States in the 19th century as they sailed past it.

The Boeing Collection

From a collection of some 500 Boeing slides that I've had scanned from my archives. Hope they will provide some enjoyment and nostalgia from a bygone age.

Man dwarfed by Jumbo Jet

Avianca Colombia's original Boeing 747 HK-2000 making a very rare visit to London Heathrow. As far as I can remember, I just fell upon this amazing sight on a random tour of the perimeter area of Heathrow. The aircraft had been undergoing emergency maintenance in the Pan Am hangar, most likely an engine swap. Spot the engineer amongst the wheels! My logbook records the flight number was AV2000, so I must have picked this up on the airband radio whilst the aircraft was undergoing ground tests. According to my notes, I then drove up to RAF Mildenhall via Stansted!

HK-2000 'El Dorado' c/n 19734 [line no.58] Boeing 747-124 - built in 1970 and one of the first 747s to roll off the Boeing production line. The aircraft was delivered new to Continental Airlines as N26862 in July 1970 and flew with the airline for just five years before returning to Boeing. Leased to Avianca Colombia, the aircraft flew the Atlantic mainly I believe between Bogota, Paris and Madrid, but never to London! The aircraft was with Avianca from 1976 until 1983, when it was returned to Boeing again as N747BA. After a couple of short-term leases to Air Algerie and SAS as N747BA, the aircraft was sold again, this ime to Tower Air as N602FF - flying with them from 1984 until retirement in 1998. The aircraft languished in storage for two or three years, and was finally broken up in 2001.

Taken with a Soviet made Zenith TTL camera and 300mm lens.

Southern Memories - in this shot we see vintage 4-SUB unit at the platform at Clapham Junction. From my logbook notes, I jumped on after taking this shot and rode the unit (driving coach S12688S) to Waterloo - transferring to the other end in unit 4630 (driving coach S11319S) for the ride back out of Waterloo to Clapham Junction :)

Note the guy staring me out on platform left! And I'm pretty sure it's my friend Tim Proudman superb50002 legging it for the train stage right :)

And here are Tim's notes from the day:

We did various units in the morning before heading over to bash the Selsdon for the very last time.

Morning Highlights include -

4SUB 4719 cab ride Bookham to Epsom, where we alighted and continued on to Sutton....for

4EPB 5425 cab ride Sutton to Wimbledon ("Wall of Death")

and haulage behind 5763, 5725 on the Selsdon line.

We did - Elmers End to Bingham, Bingham to Elmers End, then to Coombe Road and Sanderstead, back to Elmers End, back to Selsdon to Elmers End, back to Sanderstead, and back to Elmers End. This was the last move / last train, formed 5720 and 5209.

4-SUB bashing! In the summer of 1983, whilst enjoying my first year as a Geography undergraduate at Kingston Polytechnic, me and my good friends Tim Proudman and the sadly late Llew Griffith spent many happy hours riding around the rails of the Southern Region! One of our top targets was to get some 4-SUB rides before the demise of the class in October 1983. This day was one of those occasions.

My bashing friends and I spent some time clearing all the passenger routes on the Southern Region when we were at Kingston Polytechnic back in 1982-1985. During this period, we had many a ride on the old 4-SUB units which were finally withdrawn from service in 1983. We noticed a collection of the units withdrawn in the old Hither Green Continental Sidings, and managed to gain entrance for a good look around one day in the late autumn of 1983. ***I still have a full set of 4-SUB stencils in my garage - courtesy of Llew Griffith (FOR SALE if anyone's interested!) - and our raid on Hither Green sidings in November 1983 - see comments section below :)***

History of individual units

4621-4754 4-Sub 1949–1951 DMBTO+TT+TT+DMBTO Most cars had new bodies on old frames, though some were entirely new build. 4667-4754 included an Augmentation trailer from withdrawn units.

The original slide was rescued from a box of 'duds' that I could never quite bring myself to throw away - now I am glad that I kept them ;)

Taken with a Zenith TTL SLR camera and standard lens. Scanned from the original slide with minimal digital restoration

This DC-3 (actually a C-47) originally overturned during landing, January 19th 1974, 20 kilometers to the south Chaitén. The wings of this DC-3 were found weeks later by the Army and Air Service Search and Rescue (SAR) personnel who went looking for the C-47 " flight T 212". But they never did find the fuselage!!

The DC-3 had six crew on board and a civilian, a boy aged 10, Raul of the Villar Andreuzzi, he was the son of a battalion commander and pilot of this DC-3 named Juan Raul of the Villar Arrieta.

In spite of passed time, 24 years later, the young boy has fresh memories of the accident. He was on a trip/vacation to Montt Port and at that time, the Air Force was in charge of supplying places in South Chili that were separated from the regional capitals. "The DC-3 was filled with milk jars and food" he said.

The young boy, now a publicist and age 34, remembered that he often accompanied his father during the food distribution tasks in all the elements and in 10 days, the work was completed in normal fashion without incident.

Nevertheless, the day of the accident changed time abruptly in the south of Chile, "It all happened in a ½ hour". "When the airplane began to fail, my papa piloting the DC-3, tried to follow a track toward a valley located between several hills. He made a forced landing and the ship was almost completely buried in mud and badly burning ".

The registry entry within the logbook of the Air Service Search and Rescue (SAR), about this particular accident, notes that six people were on board, all military, and were seated on the DC-3 in a way to keep the airplane trimmed. There were no victims, but these people have the accident embedded in there memories forever . "In the mind of a boy aged 10, you imagine that anything can happen, especially when not fully understanding what is going on". "My papa explained to me that, even with the complications of the situation, everything was under control ", said Raul of the Villar Andreuzzi.

The publicist indicated that his father radioed to give an alert/mayday in order to give exact coordinates where the accident happened, so that the authorities could activate a search. " This happened about 4.00pm in the afternoon and 'customs officers?' were sent and started looking for us in a jeep about 9.00pm that night (6 hours later). The geography in that area is quite complicated and we had crashed in a valley between hills, filled with vegetation and two meters (over 8 feet) in height and, we had extreme and drastic bad weather.

Raul of the Villar Andreuzzi never returned to the scene of the accident, but later found out through a friend, that an airplane fuselage had been turned into a house by a group of peasants with a chimney on top of it near the place of the original C-47 crash of 1974.

"Twelve years after this happened, a friend of mine traveled to the south and found an aircraft fuselage turned into a house. It occurred to me that this 'could' be the same airplane that I was involved with re the accident It seemed that the fuselage was moved quite a ways from the original crash site and, for that reason the military at the time, consisting of 14 inexperienced soldiers (who went looking for flight T 212) only found the wings weeks later" said Raul of the Villar Andreuzzi.

The 14 inexperienced soldiers of the Army that participated in the search operation of flight "T 212" got 'lost' in the province of Palena, due to bad climatic conditions and the search was abruptly suspended.

The flights of commercial airplanes to Montt Port were also cancelled leaving more than twenty passengers stranded at the local airport of Chaitén. The helicopters had no luck either, in that they could not defy the ferocious conditions of the climate. They literally had to be anchored to the concrete of the local airport. Even the helicopter of the Chilean Air Force, a Blackhawk, had to be moored to the concrete structures within the airport.

The expert terrestrial units were no exception, they had to remain in camp at Port Red Cardinal because of the terrible climatic conditions. Treacherous winds that reached 100 miles per hour, heavy rains, poor visibility and all electrical power shutdown in downtown Chaitén, also placed danger on the security units that regularly patrol the mountainous peaks of the Michimahuida.

During the15 day search all meteorological phenomena had been registered by the search party, low clouds, terrential rain, hail, hurricane like winds, etc.,

Even the foreign P-3 Orion aircraft could only fly within a limited area of the crash site, and the search flight itself lasted under an hour without any positive results. In addition, the crew on board of the P-3 Orion, composed of 18 'expert' search specialists, would leave the country the following day in the direction of Ecuador, with the purpose of returning part of the crew and then fly on to Puerto Rico.

This is in a lovely Yellow and if I remember correctly it was featured in an episode of Top Gear according to the info on the dash. Currently taxed until the 1st of April 2023 and without MOT since the 23rd of June 2018 although it is classed as a historic vehicle. According to its last MOT on the 24th of June 2017 it had done 40,039 miles, although that would have risen since then. Last logbook change was on the 12th of March 2021.

Seen at the Stony Stratford Classic Car Show

Very original and used Volkswagen Caddy that has recently turned up at this location. Was up for sale in this photo, no price stated but labelled as one owner! Its tax expired today and the logbook was also updated today (19/6/22) so I would assume it has sold, hopefully to a good home! The past owner surely got good use out of it! MOT'ed until the 10th of September 2022 and currently sits at around 127,302 miles, also credit to the previous owner for getting it through MOTs, just take a look for yourself! Some very bad fails on there: www.check-mot.service.gov.uk/

Pulls up along side as a Tornado tops up with fuel.

I have just had a look through my logbook, and 147 was the very first VC10 I flew (trip 1 as a baby copilot on the conversion course) and the very last VC10 I flew, on the way home from Toulouse after the AAR trials with A400M at Airbus... such a nice jet!

Hugely rare Chevette HSR in lovely condition. Seems to have been put back on the road in 2014 and barely does any miles nowadays, most was between 2015-2016 where it did 496 miles. Currently without MOT since the 6th September 2019 although it is MOT exempt as its now 44 years old. Last logbook change was on the 3rd July 2019.

N6653K, a de Havilland Canada DHC-2 Beaver Mk. 1, heading south on taxiway "Bravo" to runway 33 at Toronto Buttonville Municipal Airport in Markham, Ontario.

Kenneth Gorelick (aka Kenny G) was flying solo aboard his classy classic. That day, the renowned saxophonist flew to Fort Wayne, Indiana; Kirksville, Missouri; and Kansas City, Missouri. In the process, he added approximately 8 hours and 50 minutes to his logbook. This beautiful Beaver arrived home at Camarillo, California two days after departing Toronto.

Serial number 565 was delivered from the plant in Downsview, Ontario to the United States Army as 53-2782 on November 3, 1953.

This airplane's understated registration doesn't distract one's eye from its elegant paint scheme.

On Final approach to runway 26 at RAF Brize Norton. "Bob" now lives at RAF Cosford at the RAF Museum.

Just checked my logbook and this was 19 Jun 09 and taken from XR807, another C1K

I thought this would have no MOT and be on SORN but happily I was incorrect! This one is taxed until the 1st of June 2023 and MOTed until the 11th of March 2023, and currently sits at around 92,535 miles, it covers very little mileage nowadays. Last logbook change was on the 5th of June 2017.
