The Dresden Triple Locks was part of the Ohio and Erie Canal was a canal constructed during the 1820s and early 1830s in Ohio. It connected Akron with the Cuyahoga River near its outlet on Lake Erie in Cleveland, and a few years later, with the Ohio River near Portsmouth. It also had connections to other canal systems in Pennsylvania.
The canal carried freight traffic from 1827 to 1861, when the construction of railroads ended demand. From 1862 to 1913, the canal served as a water source for industries and towns. During 1913, much of the canal system was abandoned after important parts were flooded severely.
The Miraflores Locks Visitor Center has a museum which includes this simulation of the bridge of a container ship and the way it looks going through the canal.
There are thousands of these 'love-locks' attached to Cologne's Hohenzollern Bridge. A couple's name is written or engraved on a padlock which is then fastened to the bridge and the key is thrown into the Rhine.
People lock locks onto the Roberto Clemente Bridge. Many of them declare love or are in memorial. Others are just locks.
All these locks symbolise the love between couples. A contrast with the two figures on the boat who are as far away from each other as possible.
I spent Sunday fixing several of the old, sticking, and/or broken locks at the neighbors' house. This one was so broken, we had to take this door off of its hinges just to finish getting all the parts out of the door. The mechanism that went into the door frame refused to retract, and we couldn't get the door open. Angie & Rozelle had never heard of using graphite lubricant for locks, so it was an eye-opener for them that they didn't have to live with the headache of sticking locks and jammed keys.
