Boats lining up waiting to go from Lake Washington fresh water to the salt water of Puget Sound. They lower the water on this side for the boats going out, while raising the water on the other side to let the other boats in.

I try to shoot these locks every time I get to Ottawa, but I don't seem to really get what I want. Here are the 2011 versions - kind of blah, but someday I'll get the effect I'm looking for. :-)

The Parks workers appeared to be operating the locks manually by turning big cranks. I didn't realize it worked like that.

Middle lock gate machine building on the QE II dock entrance lock at Eastham. This gate is less than 1/3 of the way from the outside gate of the lock, presumably to save water when locking tugs in and out of the QE II dock.
