Thousands of padlocks were attached to the bridge over many years but work to remove and melt them down, started around September 2024, so that maintenance could be carried out on the bridge. Such was the outcry that a new home was found for the locks, which are on display at Thornbridge Hall, about three miles away.
Passers-by view thousands of colorful "love locks" attached to a railing on Namsan mountain in Seoul, Korea. The practice of affixing padlocks to public fixtures to symbolize love -- which is said to have originated during WWI -- can be observed in many places throughout the world.
“Foxton Locks are ten canal locks consisting of two "staircases" each of five locks, located on the Leicester line of the Grand Union Canal about 3 miles (5 km) west of the Leicestershire town of Market Harborough. They are named after the nearby village of Foxton.
They form the northern terminus of a 20-mile (32 km) summit level that passes Husbands Bosworth, Crick and ends with the Watford flight
Alongside the locks is the site of the Foxton Inclined Plane, built in 1900 to resolve the operational restrictions imposed by the lock flight. It was not a commercial success and only remained in full-time operation for ten years.[6] It was dismantled in 1926, but a project to re-create it commenced in the 2000s, since the locks remain a bottleneck for boat traffic.”

It takes an hour and a half to go through the 8 locks from the Rideau canal to the Ottawa river (in the summer) an 80 ft change in elevation

Connecticut Southern CSO-4 rolls alongside the Windsor Locks Canal and the Ahlstrom-Munksjo Nonwovens plant which manufactures fiber-based materials. Two GP38-2s and a B39-8E lead the freight from West Springfield to Hartford.
The 29 locks have a rise of 237 feet in 2 miles (72 m in 3.2 km) or a 1 in 44 gradient. The locks come in three groups: this is the middle section with sixteen locks form a steep flight in a straight line up the hillside and are designated as a scheduled monument and are also known as one of the Seven Wonders of the Waterways.Because of the steepness of the terrain, the pounds between these locks are very short. As a result, fifteen of them have unusually large sideways-extended pounds, to store the water needed to operate them. A final six locks take the canal into Devizes. The locks take 5–6 hours to traverse in a boat.
The Ponte Milvio, spanning the Flume Tevere (Tiber River) in Rome, was an important bridge during the age of the Roman Empire. After a scene in a popular movie, couples began attaching padlocks to a lamppost on the bridge and then tossing the keys into the river. The padlocks collapsed the lamppost in 2008, not long after I took this picture. But, the tradition persisted and has since spread globally.
Our canals are quiet at the moment due to the coronavirus lockdown, but hopefully they'll soon be busy again. Whilton Locks is the name of a flight of seven locks (one is pictured) on the Grand Union Canal near Daventry in Northamptonshire. They are also referred to as Buckby Lock Flight. The seven locks raise the level of the canal by 63 feet and date from 1796. Whilton Marina is located close to the bottom lock and was constructed in 1971. It has moorings for 200 boats. For full details please see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whilton_Locks.

Having borrowed a Canon EOS 6D on this particular night, it seemed fitting to just go around and shoot whatever caught my eye. Here is something that sparkled and caught it...wedding locks on the bridge. An easy target and one that I was immediately drawn to. :) Discover fun, its fun to discover.

Yet another failed attempt at an autumnal shot of the pound above these locks at Whilton. No water, then a rogue cloud, and today, the boats pulled straight into the bank (coming in at wrong angle for the sun, and then in shade when they straightened up.......) This shot of 2 narrowboats leaving Buckby Lock #13 is the best I could muster, but when you don`t want a black boat, you get one..........
I will have to try again one day next week.

The lock gates are expertly crafted and all made by hand. The great canal walks, 7-mile route combines natural delights with incredible the man-made wonders and has some thrilling views along the way.
Foxton Locks are ten canal locks consisting of two "staircases" each of five locks, located on the Leicester line of the Grand Union Canal about 5 km west of the Leicestershire town of Market Harborough and are named after the nearby village of Foxton.
Staircase locks are used where a canal needs to climb a steep hill, and consist of a group of locks where each lock opens directly into the next, that is, where the bottom gates of one lock form the top gates of the next.
Foxton Locks are the largest flight of such staircase locks on the English canal system.
The Grade II* listed locks are a popular tourist attraction and the county council has created a country park at the top.

Located on the Rideau River, Merrickville is a unique and vibrant Victorian village on the Rideau Canal running through the centre town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site built in the early 1800s. You can also watch boats going through three locks each hand-operated. An organization called Communities in Bloom named Merrickville Canada's Most Beautiful Village in a 1998 competition, and it regained the honor in 2019.
