The custom of placing "love locks" on fences seems to have originated in Europe. The custom is thought to be inspired by Federico Moccia’s Italian novel, “I Want You.” In the book, a couple places a bicycle lock around a lamppost and then casts the key into the River Tiber as a gesture of their love.

Caen Hill Locks are a flight of 29 locks on the Kennet and Avon Canal between Rowde and Devizes in Wiltshire.
The 29 locks have a rise of 237 feet in two miles and come in three groups. The lower seven locks, Foxhangers Wharf Lock to Foxhangers Bridge Lock spread over three quarters of a mile. The next sixteen form a steep flight in a straight line up the hillside. A final six locks take the canal into Devizes. It takes 5 - 6 hours to traverse in a boat!

Although known by many as Whilton Locks, The locks themselves are officially Buckby Locks, and here we see 2 narrowboats entering Buckby Bottom Lock #13. although they will not get any further for some time at least, as the pound ahead of them was very low, maybe just 6 inches of water.

Took a different route for my lunch hour walk today and decided to visit this bridge, it's been a while since I walked through here and I was curious about how many more locks had been added in the last couple years.
Well, more have been added, and I think some have been removed. But that's love for you; sometimes it's kind of fickle.
Anyway, hope everyone has had a good day.

The Ponte Milvio, spanning the Flume Tevere (Tiber River) in Rome, was an important bridge during the age of the Roman Empire. After a scene in a popular movie, couples began attaching padlocks to a lamppost on the bridge and then tossing the keys into the river. The padlocks collapsed the lamppost in 2008, not long after I took this picture. But, the tradition persisted and has since spread globally.
The 29 locks have a rise of 237 feet in 2 miles (72 m in 3.2 km) or a 1 in 44 gradient. The locks come in three groups: this is the middle section with sixteen locks form a steep flight in a straight line up the hillside and are designated as a scheduled monument and are also known as one of the Seven Wonders of the Waterways.Because of the steepness of the terrain, the pounds between these locks are very short. As a result, fifteen of them have unusually large sideways-extended pounds, to store the water needed to operate them. A final six locks take the canal into Devizes. The locks take 5–6 hours to traverse in a boat.
