This is a boat loader erected in 1922 in Lessines (Belgium) and used until 1984 when it was permanently shut down. It was used to load porphyry in ships. The porphyry crushes, transported by railcars from the Lessines quarry sites using a private railway, reached the structure on a conveyor belt and were taken to silos for sorting. They were then dumped directly into the holds of the barges, moored to the side of the building.
The 8 silos had a capacity of 35 tonnes each. Their size made it possible to prepare crushed mixtures of several dimensions. This system made it possible to load eight boats per day, where it had previously taken eight men and no less than seven hours to fill, with the wheelbarrow, a single barge of 280 tons.

Due to licensing issues with Sigourney Weaver’s likeness rights, we were unable to use Weaver’s portrait for Ripley in the Power Loader Diorama. This was, of course, disappointing to us, but we feel we managed to create a youthful portrait that best captures the facial emotion of the female lead battling the universe’s top adversary, the Queen Alien. The real star of this project, however, is the Power Loader itself. The proximity display scene that the loader and Queen Alien create is the statement of machine VS biological menace, a titanic battle that is ongoing and extremely relevant. This struggle is one that is ever-present and will continue to be so, and these two dioramas together really capture that clash. We’re really proud of this composition and all the hard work done literally by a host of developers from all points on the globe, and we think that collectors will really appreciate the dynamic interaction of these two dioramas.

For at least a few people, June 9th was the official day to celebrate the 6x9 cm format. The sixth month, the ninth day: got it? And I was one of those numerologically induced people who picked up their 6x9 cameras that day. I shot eight pictures in my Bessa. My Bessa was my first old camera, bought for me twenty-odd years ago by my wife as a birthday present. The morning of June 9th, I put a roll of six-years-expired Ilford XP-2 Super in it (the film had expired March 2004). I carried the camera with me all day.
As I went to a morning meeting in another building, I went through the loading zone in the basement where a wag has put a mannequin's head. It's been there several years to my amusement. It often has a baseball cap on, or a cigarette in its mouth. This morning, it was sporting a nice hair-do and moustache.
The Bessa has hairy bits hanging into its film frame and I've not been very quick to clean them out.
These are the trains car carriers. It was fun to watch all of the cars being loaded. I think they did this before. :-)

I was on a business trip in Zambia, without my camera, but with my iPhone.
I love to walk around in African towns and markets to take photos of the unique atmosphere and vibrancy. As a passenger in a car for a lot of the time, I could not resist capturing some images, often traveling at speed and with surprising success.

12/6/2009. NS N10 heads north on the main past Maidsville Yard. Maidsville was once a bustling location on the Monongahela. With a switcher working both ends of the yard and many extras and turns originating and terminating here, it was one the MGA's busiest locations. Now Maidsville is home to crosstie loading and frac sand unloading.

[The background story]
Instead of focusing on 'and then there were none', I kinda went with the opposite...there's always something. In terms of projects around my house, they are never ending...but I love it.
