Night shot from my hotel room on the 7th floor at the Novotel in Hoofddorp. Made use of Livetime setting on my camera.

--***--

Rugged night where my Olympus Em1 and M.zuiko 7-14 (and tripod) decided to take a ride rolling down the rock. The lens was very misadjusted internally and the camera activated the stabilizer when I wanted so there were moving images and others not. We had gone out to take pictures and this setback was not going to stop us. I changed the 7-14 to the 12-40 and discovered that in the Olympus Livetime shooting mode I did not activate the stabilizer so this was my shooting mode the rest of the night. The night began with an accident but in the end I managed to take the photo I wanted. I hope you like it and comment if you feel like it.

I've been out on the last three night hoping to capture at least part of the Eta Aquarid meteorite shower. Its mainly been clouded over but tonight there was a short break in the clouds. A very significant rain event is just minutes away. Time to accept no meteorite traces, yet again...

This is a 3 minute Live Time exposure (ie my little Olympus camera was building a long exposure as I watched) You can see how far the earth moved in three minutes by the streaks in the star trails, the wind buffeted branches of the tree and the drawn out flow of the clouds. This is a long exposure process as you watch on the LCD screen, it is pretty amazing

This photo was taken just before sunrise on a cold morning in down town Whitehorse. Ambient air temperature was approximately minus thirty-two degrees Celsius, which translates to minus twenty-five and a half degrees Fahrenheit. The low temperatures meant that the open water in the middle of the river was producing a wonderful ice fog, obscuring details on the far bank.

As with most of my photos, this one is not cropped, and post-processing has been kept to a minimum to preserve as much of the natural image as possible. I used the Olympus OM-D E-M1 with M.Zuiko 12-40mm F/2.8 Pro mounted to a tripod and shot in Live Time mode. My biggest concern was simply not freezing my fingers on the aluminium tripod, which can occur almost before you know it at these temperatures.

This photo was taken with the Olympus OM-D E-M1 and M.Zuiko 7-14mm f/2.8 Pro. I stopped down the lens to f/3.5 to obtain enough DOF to compensate for any minor focus errors that might have occurred in the pitch black conditions. Camera was mounted on a tripod and I utilized the OM-D's Livetime facility to monitor the exposure in real time. ISO was kept at 200 and I used a three-plus minute exposure to obtain this image. I painted the near trees with an LED flashlight to provide some foreground interest.

Diesel powered transit buses warm up at the Whitehorse Transit Yard on a minus thirty degree morning. The coldest days in the north seem to give the most mundane scenes a kind of ethereal quality.

A very colorful FHDR processing of this OM-D light painting. Think I prefer this version. Or maybe the 16:9 cutout.

I'm still really enjoying this new fisheye of mine 😁 So much so that today, I went out for a little walk. I left the bus at the Rosengarten park; you see that one to the right, the horizontal bar above the line of yellow tinted street lights is the restaurant up there. From there, I walked down, stopping to take a shot every dozen meters or so. Crossed the bridge and went towards the lights to the far left of the image, first to the Münster and then all the way to the main station.

And then I even got the last bus, by a matter of pure chance and a few seconds.

Technical mumbo jumbo: This lens really works different than so many of my other lenses, from an optical point of view. It has so few corrections and benefits so much from stopping down that I actually shoot f/11 with it - way beyond the diffraction limit for my sensors, but the additional sharpness from stopping down improves the image more than diffraction degrades it. And because the metering is useless at manual f/11 and I don't feel like shooting blind, I'm so really happy about my camera's "Live Time" mode.

So this lens really needs a tripod to sing. I'm fairly happy about the images from yesterday and two days ago, but the noise in the Zytglogge image bothers me a bit. There's no such thing here; it's even an HDR from three exposures 😄
