The 4th annual Toronto Park Summit took place on February 22nd at Daniels Spectrum in Regent Park.
This slideshow highlighted and celebrated our accomplishments in 2013.
Toronto Park People's Park Summit is the premier event celebrating and sharing the successes and opportunities of Toronto’s 1600+ parks. This year’s theme, Reimagine Our Parks, explored creative ways volunteers and partners can transform parks into the heart of their communities. 400 of Toronto’s most passionate park advocates and champions came together at the 2014 Toronto Park Summit.
The keynote adress was given by Adrian Benepe. Adrian was New York City’s Parks Commissioner under Mayor Bloomberg from 2002 to 2012. He is currently a Senior Vice President and Director of City Park Development for the Trust for Public Land, the world’s leading independent organization supporting the protection and enhancement of city parks. Adrian is one of the leading global experts on connecting the public, private, and nonprofit sectors in public-space development and management and his role with TPL is to provide advice on using partnerships to improve parks in cities across the US. As NYC’s Parks Commissioner, Adrian oversaw a renaissance in New York City’s parks system including adding 730 acres of parkland and overseeing such exciting new parks as the High Line, Battery Park and Brooklyn Bridge Park.
Reimaging the Role of Our Parks. We featured and explored opportunities to reimagine parks with four park groups.

The summit concluded with remarks from Richard Ubbens, acting director of Parks, Forestry & Recreation with the City of Toronto, followed by a social and tour of the new Regent Park, opening this summer.
Members of the Regent Park Food Partnership took attendees for a one-hour walking tour of the Regent Park community. Regent Park is undergoing a massive transformation, which is being looked at around the world as a model by which challenged urban neighbourhoods can be re-imagined and re-created as healthy, sustainable communities. See and hear about the new state-of-the-art neighbourhood amenities (including the six-acre park!) that are at the centre of this transformation and are sure to be a destination for the entire City!

I had been wandering through the Livegreen ecology-themed festival in downtown Toronto and had recently met and photographed my 117th Stranger, Brenna on a cloudy, showery afternoon.
I was aware of loud live music coming from nearby Dundas Square which was also part of the Livegreen festival so I walked over and joined the standing crowd of people enjoying the band on stage. The music was pop and rock and I enjoyed in particular watching one man dancing by himself to the music in the midst of the crowd (see comment photo).
Between songs I turned to move on and saw this man standing next to his girlfriend (wife?), both of them beneath umbrellas since it had been raining on and off during the afternoon. What struck me was his eyes which were catching the natural light despite the umbrella and I also noticed the totally serene look on his face. I hesitated briefly, then pushed myself to approach him for the project. He listened to my brief request and explanation with in an open manner and said “Sure.” His partner stepped aside and watched as I gave him minimal instruction to look into my camera lens and I took three or four exposures, all quite similar, being increasingly careful about focus on his eye for sharpness. I showed him this, the last exposure I had made, and he smiled and asked his partner what she thought. She looked and said it was good.
I introduced myself and told him that he made a great subject and I liked the way the light fell on his face beneath the umbrella. He reached into his wallet to give me a card, saying “Let me put a name to the face.” The card had his contact information on one side and a logo of a helmeted soldier on a motorcycle doing a “wheelie” on the other side with the words “Canadian Army Veteran.” He explained that he belongs to CAV (Canadian Army Veterans) and their chapter in the nearby city of Hamilton, Ontario. He explained they are veterans who ride motorcycles and are active in charitable activities with a particular emphasis on providing help to the families of veterans either injured or killed in their military service. You can see the card and find out about CAV here: www.thecav.ca/index_en.php?mode=4
We talked briefly about the worthwhile nature of the work he and CAV are doing and I asked about the designation SSM which followed his name on the contact card. He explained it stood for Special Service Medal. At this point the music was starting up again so I thanked Norm and told him I had enjoyed meeting him. I gave him my 100 Strangers contact card and told him I would email him his photo and he thanked me. I wish I had a chance to find out more about his four years of voluntary military service and about what he had done to earn his Special Service Medal. I will ask these questions in an email when I send him his photo.
I’m really pleased with the natural light falling on Norm’s face in this photo and like the crispness and sparkle in his eyes. I know we often develop impressions of people even from a brief meeting, and I saw a real kindness in Norm's eyes. I like the way if you look closely, you can see the raindrops still sitting on the umbrella to the left of his face. I was left with a strong impression of how serene Norm appeared, both in person and in this portrait. He looked like a man totally at peace with himself and I think the photo captured this quality. This seems all the more notable when one considers that many veterans have seen and experienced some awful things. Perhaps his volunteer work with CAV has contributed to the sense of serenity I felt in meeting him.
Thank you Norm for participating so willingly in 100 Strangers. You are now Stranger #118/200 in Round 2 of my project.
