Toronto Park People's Park Summit is the premier event celebrating and sharing the successes and opportunities of Toronto’s 1600+ parks. This year’s theme, Reimagine Our Parks, explored creative ways volunteers and partners can transform parks into the heart of their communities. 400 of Toronto’s most passionate park advocates and champions came together at the 2014 Toronto Park Summit.
The keynote adress was given by Adrian Benepe. Adrian was New York City’s Parks Commissioner under Mayor Bloomberg from 2002 to 2012. He is currently a Senior Vice President and Director of City Park Development for the Trust for Public Land, the world’s leading independent organization supporting the protection and enhancement of city parks. Adrian is one of the leading global experts on connecting the public, private, and nonprofit sectors in public-space development and management and his role with TPL is to provide advice on using partnerships to improve parks in cities across the US. As NYC’s Parks Commissioner, Adrian oversaw a renaissance in New York City’s parks system including adding 730 acres of parkland and overseeing such exciting new parks as the High Line, Battery Park and Brooklyn Bridge Park.

It was a rainy afternoon and Yonge Street in Toronto’s downtown core was closed off to accommodate the Livegreen Toronto Festival (www.toronto.ca/livegreen/index.htm). I’m interested in public events and in the variety of people who attend them so I spent a bit of time browsing the open-sided tents offering information on a variety of ecology-related products and services and trying to keep my camera dry with a plastic shopping bag.
One booth that particularly attracted my interest was for a nonprofit organization called LEAF (www.yourleaf.org). One of LEAF's programs is the Toronto Backyard Tree Planting Program. Toronto has strict bylaws designed to protect the urban canopy (forest). These bylaws require residents to obtain a permit from the city before cutting down a tree from private property. These permits are not easy to obtain and cost money. When granted, they usually require a replacement tree to be planted on the homeowner's property at the owner's expense. If this is impractical, the homeowner can pay a fee to have a replacement tree planted on city property to maintain the natural canopy of the city. Although these bylaws could be viewed as restrictive and infringing on personal freedoms, they are well-intentioned and contribute to Toronto being a very "green" city. From tall buildings, in summer months, Toronto appears to be one huge forest.
I was interested in the LEAF tent because their Backyard Tree Planting Program may be perfect for us by providing the planting of a tree on our property along with a consultation by an arborist as to what type of tree would best suit our backyard conditions. This is done for a reasonable, set price.
Meet Brenna, the LEAF representative who noted my approach to the tent and offered to answer my questions. We talked about the program and I learned that the reason their services are so affordable is that they are a "not-for-profit organization dedicated to the protection and improvement of the urban forest." I got a brochure and had my questions answered. It was at that point that I noticed Brenna's sparkling eyes (she and I later concluded that they are "hazel" color) and friendly face and began thinking "Strangers thoughts." I explained the project and asked if she would be interested in participating. She seemed a bit surprised at this turn of events in our conversation but said she didn't see any reason not to participate.
At this point things got a bit more complicated because the rain started falling again and I realized I was standing under the edge of the tent where the rain was running off the tent and onto me. My umbrella was clashing with the edge of the tent and I was trying to figure out if I could do without the umbrella to free my hands but when I put my umbrella down it began to blow away and I had to scramble to retrieve it. In other words, this was another of my super-smooth Strangers approaches. I think we were both amused by this somewhat clumsy situation and I just said "If I can just figure out how to do this without losing my umbrella or getting my camera drowned" and Brenna was very patient while her coworkers fielded questions from other visitors to the tent. I managed to get things under control and stood just inside the edge of the open tent roof and had to increase the ISO and instruct Brenna to just look straight into the lens (my standard request) and to choose an expression that was comfortable for her while I would take a few exposures to guard against blinking. I became even more aware of her attractive eyes and her smile seemed totally natural.
I learned that Brenna is 27, graduated with a university degree in environmental protection two years ago, has had a variety of ecology-oriented short term jobs as she seeks a more permanent position to launch her career. She is currently an intern with LEAF and is happy with the range of experience she is gaining with the organization. She is from southwestern Ontario but is enjoying her stay in Toronto. She is considering doing a graduate degree in Forest Conservation which she would like to do in Toronto. She was interested in Flickr and in the project which she thought was a very interesting one. She said she took a summer trip to Europe last year and got a Canon DSLR for the trip and enjoys photography but doesn't consider herself a very well-rounded photographer. She has taken photos mainly of landscapes and nature but would like to be a better photographer of people. I explained how i had a similar limitation with photography but that the 100 Strangers project has been perfect for me and that I'm now far more comfortable approaching and photographing strangers.
Thank you Brenna for taking the time to explain the LEAF programs and for taking the extra time for a friendly chat and for posing for 100 Strangers. You are now Stranger #117/200 in Round 2 of my project. I hope you get the career you want in environmental protection. It is an area that is becoming increasingly recognized as crucial to our future.
Find out more about the project and see pictures taken by other photographers at the 100 Strangers Flickr Group page

Reimaging the Role of Our Parks. We featured and explored opportunities to reimagine parks with four park groups.

The summit concluded with remarks from Richard Ubbens, acting director of Parks, Forestry & Recreation with the City of Toronto, followed by a social and tour of the new Regent Park, opening this summer.
Members of the Regent Park Food Partnership took attendees for a one-hour walking tour of the Regent Park community. Regent Park is undergoing a massive transformation, which is being looked at around the world as a model by which challenged urban neighbourhoods can be re-imagined and re-created as healthy, sustainable communities. See and hear about the new state-of-the-art neighbourhood amenities (including the six-acre park!) that are at the centre of this transformation and are sure to be a destination for the entire City!

The 4th annual Toronto Park Summit took place on February 22nd at Daniels Spectrum in Regent Park.
This slideshow highlighted and celebrated our accomplishments in 2013.

My project for school to promote living green. My homemade kite was made out of an old poster and recycled paper, the string was probably the only thing I bought.

This is part of the whole series of renewable energy images that we are digging up from the "secret" (not really) archives to post for general use by all. Three different solar technologies in use - Solar PV to provide electric, solar hot water for the home and solar pool heat for, well, obviously, the pool.

Reimaging the Role of Our Parks. We featured and explored opportunities to reimagine parks with four park groups.

Mayoral candidate Olivia Chow and councillor for Ward 26, John Parker, helped kick off Flemingdon Urban Fair's clean up in Flemingdon Park, a park in the hydro corridor alongside Don Mills Road, just south Eglinton. Most of the larger litter was along the edges, but lots of tiny bits were scattered all through the park. It was great to see an intergenerational clean up with seniors and children all helping out. At the end of the clean up, families and children won Science Centre passes and toys in a great raffle. For the first event they had ever planned Flemingdon Urban Fair did a phenomenal job. This is what Councillor Parker had to say, “Congratulations on convening such a successful clean-up event in Flemingdon on the weekend. I was impressed with the group you pulled together and the professionalism of the entire event.”
