Origin and Habitat: South Africa, Northern cape (Districts Gordonia, Hay, and Prieska)

Habitat: Lithops bromfieldii grows hidden under bushes or aloes on white greyish, brownish and red quartzite.

Scientific classification

Kingdom:Plantae

(unranked):Eudicots

(unranked):Core eudicots

Order:Caryophyllales

Family:Aizoaceae

Genus:Lithops

Species:L. bromfieldii

This is the withered yellow Lithops flower. It did not last long, since the cracked stem did not conduct enough water, as I suppose. The crack was the bad result of giving the plant water during bud growth. It absorbed so much water that ruptures on the surface emerged and the flower stem cracked under the pressure.

Lithops are extremely succulent plants originating from the semi-deserts of southern Africa. Their plant body rests under ground, while on top they have transparent windows to let sunlight in for photosynthesis. A camouflage pattern on the windows lets them appear more or less like a pair of pebblestones, so hungry animals may hardly find them. I like them because they look like ornamented knobs or gemstones.
