The Lister Block was erected by Joseph Lister on the corner of King William and James Streets in Hamilton in 1886. Soon after its completion it became one of the most desirable central business locations in Hamilton. The building was considered modern for its time, It had a boiler house, new methods of heating, and elevators. In 1922, an arcade was erected. When the building was occupied, the four upper floors housed offices, while the fifth floor was occupied by professional tenants, such as physicians, dentists, chiropractors, and beauty specialists. The sixth floor was occupied by offices.During the 1970's , with the completion of the new city hall the focus of civic and cultural activity began to shift from the Lister Block, causing financial difficulties for its tenants. By the early part of the 1990s, eviction notices were issued to all the tenants of the Lister Building. Since then it has remaind abandoned, in a constant state of deterioration.

I really would love to visit New York. I drew this from an actual photo that I found here on flickr.

ahh yes, this is our wish list, mine (Agatha) is to the left and Luna's is to the right, the ones highlighted we really really want, and the rest are the size of how badly we want them at the moment...except for for MAO, Luna wants him two times that size, I just had trouble fitting him underneath there...-Agatha

Oehler Mill Complex

Shelby, Wisconsin

Listed 5/22/2013

Reference Number: 13000314

The Oehler Mill Complex is being nominated to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) for its local significance under National Register (NR) Criterion C, architecture. It is significant at the local level with a period of significance of 1862-1907, dates encompassing the construction of the mill and the associated buildings of the milling complex. Research was undertaken to assess this potential utilizing the NR significance area of Architecture, a theme that is also identified in the State of Wisconsin's Cultural Resource Management Plan (CRMP). This research centered on evaluating the resources in the Complex utilizing the Italianate Style and Stone Construction subsections of the Architectural Styles study unit, and the Milling subsection of the Industry study unit portions of the CRMP. 17 The results of this research are detailed below and determined that the Complex's fine stone and brick Astylistic Utilitarian Vernacular Form flour mill building and its two fine associated brick Italianate style houses are locally significant under Criterion C, architecture. The mill is a now exceptionally rare example of an early rural flour and grist mill and its significance is heightened by the fact that the houses of Valentine Oehler and Gottfried Oehler, the two brothers who built it and ran it, are both extant and are situated on either side of it.

One of the finest interiors of any synagogue in Europe. Open this month as part of the Brighton Fringe Festival (see below for times). Come along and discover a small part of Brighton's history you may have never known about. Brighton's Jewish community steatches back to the late 18th century and its first synagogue pre-dates the first Catholic or Methodist places of worship in the city even! Famous people connected with the place include lords and ladies, politicians, leaders of industry, authors, composers, architects and even the guy that founded Ben Sherman!

To conserve it for the enjoyment of future generations of people from all communities and backgrounds Middle Street Synagogue is in urgent need of funds. Please get in touch if you would like to help out in any way.

The building was constructed in 1874-5 and was benefacted to by many famous 19th century names which ultimately led to the creation of the unique artistic scheme inside. It is a Grade II* listed building being an extremely sumptuous example of high Victorian design and is almost certainly the most ornate building in Brighton outside the Royal Pavilion.

Middle Street is open to the public every Sunday in May 2pm-5pm then every first Sunday of each month through to October.

We are happy to organize private group tours by arrangement for schools, historical societies, religious groups, art and photographic societies, architecture students, etc. (more)
