Like the Afro-Cuban goddess of love that this orchestra is named after, Ochún brings us the good things in life. A good Cuban cigar and a glass of the smoothest Cuban rum are hard to come by and must be slowly savored; so must we treat ourselves to the music of Ochún! It resonates with the music and song from the best orchestras and soloists Cuba has produced; Arcaño y sus Maravillas, Beny Moré, Orquesta Aragón, Sonora Matancera, Arsenio Rodriguez y su Conjunto and José Fajardo y su Orquesta, just to name a few. The musical styles: son, montuno, guajira, guaguanco, rumba and bolero are present here and are interpreted with a modern flair. Miguel Garcia’s lead vocals are superb – the quintessential voice of a fine Cuban cantante (singer); this is music you can dance to as well as listen to. The beautiful rhythms and songs of Cuba are re-born anew in Ochún’s music – it splashes on the soul as a fresh new sea wave. As is said in Cuba, “¡Esto no le falta nada – está entero!”

For some time now Mr Fox has suspected the worst... something so awful he hoped it couldn't be true....but today came the proof.

Santa's gone senile! The annual Naughty List was published and Mrs PB's name was on it. It's a well known secret that polar bears don't go on the naughty list. They are not the kind of bear you want to tell they're not getting a Christmas present!

However, if this wasn't enough, even more compelling evidence that Father Christmas had gone doo-lally came when they read the rest of the list;

Mr Shaun

Seamus (and not Shortbread)

Miss Lemuriana

Teddy

The Land of the Couch

Mrs Aaberg

Mr Jube

Mr Theodore

Mr Flt. Lt. Bear

Mrs Emily

Big Momma

Miss Hatts

Miss Doko

Uncle Jago

None will be getting presents.

It was all a bit too much for Mrs PB; whose shrieks in disgust could be heard resonating.

While consoling his distraught, and now rather angry polar bear, you could tell Mr Fox was already hatching a plan...

The question is - will he be able to save Christmas!

Jimerstown, Allegany Indian Territories

Reference number: 100001768

The Allegany Council House, located on the Seneca Nation of Indians Allegany Reservation in Cattaraugus County, New York, is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The property is significant at both the local and state levels for its associations with two major twentieth century events in the cultural and governmental history of the Seneca Nation. The Seneca Nation of Indians (SNI) is one of the Six Nations of the Haudenosaunee (or Iroquois) Confederacy. The Allegany Council House served as the primary gathering place for regular meetings of the Seneca Council beginning in 1926. Over the next forty years, the Allegany Council House served as the governmental center of the Seneca Nation. During this time, the building served as the socio-political epicenter for two major, nearly simultaneous Seneca Nation battles: to halt the Kinzua Dam Project and to obtain the right to vote for Seneca women.

Between 1936 and 1966, the Allegany Council House served as the primary location where the Seneca Nation discussed, debated and formulated strategies to prevent the United States government from taking 10,000 acres of treaty-protected Seneca lands along the Allegany River. After a lengthy and ultimately unsuccessful legal battle to protect their lands in the mid-twentieth century, one-third of the Allegany Reservation land was flooded by the Kinzua Dam beginning in 1966. As a result, the Seneca people suffered the taking, loss, and destruction of ancestral hunting, fishing and gathering areas, farms, homes, churches, schools, the ceremonial longhouse and burial grounds, and the forced relocation of over 600 people. While creating deep emotional and psychological wounds that last to this day, the resistance to the Kinzua Dam that occurred at the Allegany Council House ultimately strengthened Seneca determination to protect their sovereignty, helped to create a new generation of activists who have been instrumental in creating numerous education and economic opportunities for the Nation, and advanced the suffrage movement of Seneca women.

The first record of Seneca women seeking the right to vote in Nation elections occurred at the Council House in 1935. Although the first attempt was unsuccessful, during the Kinzua Dam controversy, Seneca women staffed committees, testified before the United States Congress, and helped organize the removal. It was the women’s participation and strong leadership role in the fight against the dam that finally influenced the male-dominated leadership to grant women the right to vote and hold office in the Seneca Nation, and, in 1964, in this building, Seneca woman were given the right to vote. The Allegany Council House is one of the few surviving public buildings from this era remaining on the Seneca Reservation, and it was the political and social nucleus of activity for these historic events, both of which continue to impact the Seneca Nation today.

For its role as a central meeting place for the Seneca Nation during this pivotal era in their governmental and cultural history, the Allegany Council House meets the requirements for Criterion A in the areas of Politics/Government and Ethnic Heritage (Native American). While the building was initially constructed around 1925/26 to serve as the new primary administrative center for the Nation, the period of significance begins in 1935, with the earliest recorded vote taken to give Seneca women the right to vote, and ends in 1966, when the Kinzua Dam was completed and the governmental functions were transferred out of the building to the new Haley Building nearby. The era from 1935-1966 encompasses the Seneca Nation’s struggle against the Kinzua Dam construction and the time during which the building is most strongly associated with Seneca women’s suffrage, which was finally granted in 1964. After 1966, when the original Council House building ceased serving as a governmental center, the building housed several functions. For approximately the next four decades, it functioned as the Cavalry Baptist Church, at which time the one-story full-width front gable addition and entry porch were added to the building.

History

Built in the late C19 as the town hall and shown on the 1889 Ordnance Survey. It was badly damaged by fire and the main section of the building was much rebuilt in the 1960s, leaving only the entrance front in its original condition.

Exterior

A Gothic style 2-storey entrance range of the former town hall, of snecked rubble with freestone dressings and quoins, with a swept steep hipped slate roof on a moulded stone cornice, and with prominent ironwork cresting. The Castle Street elevation has angle buttresses in the lower storey. The entrance is a wide pointed arch with hood mould, into which have been inserted modern glazed doors and panels. To its R is a 2-light mullioned window with round-headed lights, and to the L a similar but single-light window. In the upper storey a 5-light mullioned and transomed window also has round-headed lights, the central of which is raised, under a hood mould. A central coped dormer has a boarded-up round window.

A 1st-floor square corner turret is corbelled out on a freestone arcaded frieze, with additional corbels at the angles below a string course continuous with the eaves cornice of the main building. It has narrow louvres under a steep swept pyramidal roof. It has a string course carried over the adjacent window in the Castle Street elevation as a hood mould.

The High Street elevation has a 1-light window in the lower storey, 2 similar 1st-floor windows and a larger 2-light mullioned window upper L. An angle buttress to the L is beneath a corbelled former 1st-floor stack reduced to eaves level. Further behind is a 6-bay range that survives in its original form in the lower storey, above which is a concrete upper storey.

Interior

The entrance hall has 2 double-chamfer arches, between which are joist-beam ceilings with ovolo-moulded cross beams. Otherwise modernised.

Reasons for Listing

Listed, notwithstanding unsympathetic addition at the rear, as a public building retaining definite C19 character and original detail, making an important contribution to the historical townscape in a prominent position opposite the junction of the town's main streets.

This year I write a short wish list. I bought a new EOS5D MKII - now I´m broke. So my last hope is the christ child.

My list began with:

- 100 Macro 1:28 IS USM

- Speedlite 580 EX II

-

New shots of the Methodist Central Hall - this time from Ryder Street.

It is a Grade II* listed building, and is made of terracotta. At 196 - 224 Corporation Street.

It is also listed as 1, 3 and 5 Ryder Street (now a pedestrianised cul-de-sac)

Built 1903 - 04 by E and J A Harper. Red brick and terracotta. Three storeys; 5 bays to the left, 7 to the right, of the tall slender tower. Ground floor with shops (nos 208, 214, 216 and 220 with their original shop fronts) and the deep arched entrance porch with excellent figure carving over and within it. To the left, couplets of depressed arched windows above tall canted bay windows; to the right, the main hall on the 1st floor represented by large round-arched traceried windows above small bow windows. Across the top a parapet and little polygonal turrets, their capping differing between left and right. The tower rises square and sheer almost to the top where its elaboration of detail matches that of the lower facades. The return on Ryder Street is similar and has more original shop fronts eg No 5 and especially No 3 on the corner.

Hall - British Listed Buildings

Grocery List and Meal Planner I created. Download here

Victoria Baths is a Grade II* listed building, situated in the Chorlton-upon-Medlock area of Manchester, in Northwest England. The Baths opened to the public in 1906 and cost £59,144 to build. Manchester City Council closed the baths in 1993 and the building was left derelict. A multi-million pound restoration project began in 2007.

The baths were designed by the City Surveyor, T. de Courcy Meade, and his assistant, Arthur Davies. The work was supervised by Henry Price, the newly appointed city architect. The baths were opened in September 1906 by the Lord Mayor of Manchester who described the building as a "water palace". For 86 years the Baths provided essential leisure facilities. Private baths and a laundry were housed there along with three swimming pools and a Turkish bath. The main swimming pool was floored over in the winter months to hold dances. In 1952 the Victoria Baths installed the first public Aeratone (jacuzzi) in the country.

In the design and construction of the Baths, a great deal of money was expended, Manchester having at that time one of the world's wealthiest municipal coffers. The façade has multi-coloured brickwork and terracotta decoration, the main interior public spaces are clad in glazed tiles from floor to ceiling and most of the many windows have decorative stained glass.

The Baths were closed by Manchester City Council in 1993. The Friends of Victoria Baths was formed and began to investigate the possibility of running the Victoria Baths independently.

Various fund-raising attempts failed to bring about a restoration of the Baths, although work to prevent further deterioration of the building started in 1998

n September 2003, the Baths won the first series of the BBC's Restoration programme. The building was chosen by a public phone-vote from a short-list of ten buildings in danger of dereliction in the UK. It was awarded £3.4 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund and the money raised through the phone-voting process. The Prince of Wales visited the baths a month later to help celebrate the win.

It was intended that the money would be spent on re-opening the Turkish bath by around 2006, with other parts following later at a cost of around £15–20m. However, the redevelopment plans were dealt a blow one year later when quantity surveyors delivered a much larger estimate of £6.3m to restore the Turkish baths. The Heritage Lottery Fund requested further details about the full redevelopment before they would hand over any money for the first phase. Final planning approval to begin a restoration process was not received until September 2005.

In September 2006, as part of a number of events to mark the centenary of the building's opening, the gala pool was filled for the first time in 13 years.

The first phase of restoration work consisting of structural work and repairs began on Monday 19 March 2007, and was completed in September 2008. In 2011 the Baths were used as a filming location, a concert venue, and an exhibition centre.

Aphrodisias lies in southwestern Turkey, in the fertile valley of the Dandalas River, a tributary of the Meander, about 150 kilometres east (inland) of the Aegean Sea. It is situated at the base of the Babadag mountain range, at 500 m above sea level. The city was the capital of the ancient Roman province of Caria.

The ancient city of Aphrodisias is one of the most important archaeological sites of the Greek and Roman periods in Turkey. Famous in antiquity for its sanctuary of Aphrodite, the city's patron goddess, Aphrodisias enjoyed a long and prosperous existence from the second century B.C. through the sixth century A.D. Today, many of the city's ancient monuments remain standing, and excavations have unearthed numerous fine marble statues and other artifacts. The great beauty and extraordinary preservation of this site combine to bring the civic culture of the Greco-Roman world vividly to life.

Aphrodisias was founded on the site of an ancient local sanctuary in the second century B.C., according to the date of the earliest coins and inscriptions found in the site. In the late first century B.C., the city came under the personal protection of the Roman emperor Augustus, and a long period of growth and good fortune ensued. The first several centuries A.D. were especially prosperous, and most of the surviving buildings of the city date to this period. In the fourth century, Aphrodisias became the capital of the Roman province of Caria. The cosmopolitan character of the age is demonstrated by the presence in this city of an active Jewish community, attested in a famous inscription listing benefactors of the local Synagogue.

The first systematic excavations at the site were begun in 1961 under the aegis of New York University, and yielded many remains of the city's central monuments. In addition to the Temple of Aphrodite, major areas of investigation included the Bouleuterion or Council House, and the Sebasteion. The Sebasteion, a religious sanctuary dedicated to Aphrodite and the Roman emperors, is one of the most remarkable discoveries of Roman archaeology. It is one of the best-preserved examples of a Roman imperial cult complex, and is decorated with an extraordinary series of life-size marble reliefs (originally almost 200), which depict Roman emperors and imperial family members from ca. A.D. 20 to 60, as well as, personifications of the subject peoples of the Roman empire, and mythological heroes and gods. The reliefs provide an unparalleled insight into how Roman imperial power was understood from a local perspective. Other important public buildings are the Theatre, the Hadrianic Baths, and the Stadium; the latter seated 30,000 people, and is the best-preserved of all ancient stadiums. The buildings of the site are remarkable not only for the preservation of their architecture, but also for the many inscriptions, statues, reliefs, and other objects associated with them.

Aphrodisias is well-known for its fine sculpture. Good marble quarries are located only a few kilometres away from the city, and by the Late Hellenistic period, a strong local tradition of marble sculpture had already taken root. In later generations, Aphrodisian sculptors are known to have worked abroad on prestigious commissions, for example, at Hadrian's villa at Tivoli. The sculpture from the site is characterized by virtuosity and variety. Excavation has uncovered statues of, for example, gods, heroes, emperors, orators, philosophers, and boxers, as well as a great range of ornamental and figured relief. The finds range from grave reliefs of the second century B.C. to statues of the last Roman governors of the sixth century A.D. Many sculptures from the site already occupy key positions in the history of ancient art.

The studies for a site management plan were started according to a protocol between the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Geyre Foundation dated to 08.11.2007.
