I messed around with Conky today and settled on this desktop set up. I took a popular pre-made conkyrc script, whittled it down a bit, and added a barcode font for the day and time. The wallpaper is from Deviantart.com. This is on the T41 I recently fixed up.

I made this as a wallpaper for my Linux Mint-installation today. It is inspired from the asphalt wallpaper that came with the install.

I've been piecing together a custom desktop running on an old Dell D400 with Linux Mint 11. After a bunch of false starts with Conky, I opted to use screenlets to display a system monitor and weather forecast. I got the the D400 for $30 on eBay. It's a low-end business class laptop, but offers some decent upgrade potential. The original Broadcom card crawls at a snail's pace with the Linux legacy driver, so I pulled out the wireless card from an old T41 that's been sitting in the closet ever since the video chip died. I also swapped a 1GB RAM chip with the 512kb one nested under the Dimm plate beneath the keyboard. Now the Dell is running pretty well, although I'm going to try installing an Atheros N draft card in it next. At some point I might swap out the Pentium M chip for one that's 2Ghz.
