More lino printing tomfoolery : )

Unit 2

Brief:

Identify the company that you wish to design for. In addition to your design, you will be asked to design and make a number of specific products that would be sold in a souvenir shop to ensure that you work in a variety of media, materials and dimensions. These can include:

1) A cylindrical container decorated with appropriate images

2) A set of acrylic coasters

3) A key ring fob

4) a set of greeting cards (pictured above)

5) An acrylic paperweight

©2012 Julia Forsyth, block printing ink and Sharpie pen on cut cardstock, aluminum foil and yard on acid-free paper.

This is the scanned version of the mixed-media piece. It's the first piece I've used yarn on, and the lovely bluish-red yarn scanned orange!! Whaaaat?? I went to 3 different stores to get just the right shade of red, but you might never know from this image. The image below, #Draw365.356, shows it with close to accurate color. (But that image is blurry. Seems like one thing is always messed up with my DIY photos - ugh.)

So...not sure why, but I was thinking how much I like working with shiny materials (must be my Myna heritage...) and I wanted to combine a print and some foil. I did, but it seemed unfinished. And I was loving how a big texture like foil could also handle another big texture - yarn. So I put them together, added the yellow eyes and beak, scanned it, and voila! Great Gray Owl Power.

In the first days of Covid-19, masks were the thing everyone needed. Frontline health and care workers needed them more than I did but I experiemented with solutions. My snorkelling mask almost seemed like a joke until I saw images of ICU nurses on the Continent wearing exactly the same mask, adapted for hospital needs. I solved my mask needs by ordering from the company that I bought printed canvases from - they demosntrated their entrepreneurial sense very quickly. A set of masks bearing the image of one of my two-colour linoprint artworks became the main source of daily masks.

this piece was included in the feb/march issue of quilting arts magazine. it was part of an article i wrote called 'layered print making'. the fabrics have been lino printed with an original leaf design.

This is my latest linocut. I'm not nuts about it...but I spent so much damn time on it...I have to give it a little attention. Here's where I'm at:

01. I'm not creative enough to do "smarter" linos.

02. I'm not artistic enough to make "real" linos.

03. I'm not very consistent or accurate with my inking.

04. I DO feel like I'm a good cutter.

For these kinds of illustrations where there is tons of negative space...I need a larger brayer...I keep falling into the valleys.

This illustration is inspired by the famous lyric of A Hard Rain's A Gonna Fall by Bob Dylan:

I met a young girl...she gave me a rainbow

I was ordering my usual carving rubber block supply from Japan and couldn't resist getting the white NT Cutter D-400. It looks great with the white Fiskars scissors.

The scalpel is almost exactly size as my old black C.K.S. Cutter G-400, but it's got less of a glossy grip.

handmade linoprint card, the first from my new design

This was a really fun commission to make, the couple wanted their names to be jumbled up together- so sweet! I was really pleased with the result, and so were they. Handprinted with individual linoblocks onto canvas.

A hand pulled linocut. This is part of my series of prints of images associated with coal mining in the Rhonnda Valleys, South Wales. There'll be a background going in at some point but I thought I'd share it at this stage.

A lino print- matisse inspired

Some of my first attemps at lino printing since I was at school in the 60's

My second printing project, image requested by a co-worker. The image itself is approximately 6" by 5 1/2", cut into Speedball lino block, printed on an unbleached mulberry stock with Speedball water based ink - using a combo rolling pin and Japanese style baren to hand print the image.

I may not be trading at the moment, but sticker production continues as before. These are part of a test set using old inks at work, that have been sitting on a shelf for ages. The speedball black ink works best do far - I still have to test another 6 or 8 types. Some of the no name products refuse to dry, even after a week. I'll try applying a hair dryer, and pray it doesn't affect the sticker adhesive.

The ink is still wet and glistens but I just couldn't wait to post this one because I got it right! I feel like I don't have as much control as I'd like, perhaps I need to learn to use the tools better or maybe there are tools I don't know about. Anyway this is so much better than the one with backwards words :-D

I printed 8 and only 2 are good, 2 I like even though they aren't perfect and 4 are not good at all. I'm learning. This time I used Mulberry paper and didn't have to dampen it.

Now I'm looking forward to doing another one!

handprinted from two original linocuts, to commission. Limited edition print, onyl24 made

Materials: Richeson easy-cut-Lino, speedball water soluble ink on Stillman & Birn, Epsilon paper.

Notes: ....test print for the image on my New Years cards. Bit of cleaning up and making an executive decision on ink colour, but am to go with the Zeta rather than the Beta based on personal aesthetic for this design.

My latest lino print - Monsieur le Roitelet strolls through the Parisian streets with his walking cane and stylish hat, blissfuly unaware that two cheeky birds are enjoying a ride on his enormous hat. Everyone smiles as they see the funny little man and his passengers, and the Monsieur thinks the world is a wonderful place, with so many friendly people admiring his new hat.
