So, I looked with an unforgiving eye at different color to surround the raven with since I've already done a red raven and a red eagle owl, but after seriously evaluating all my other acrylic colors (standard and hand-mixed) and polling some important people whose artistic input I trust, it was unanimous that red is the perfect foil for classic black and white. So red it is once again!
One big, painful mistake I made on the previous #twitterartexhibit was NOT spraying the water-soluble linocut with fixative before trying to coat the whole thing with varnish. That's the short cut to a gigantic, black-smeared, messy heartbreak. I'm one coat of fixative in - two more to go tonight. Then comes varnish time.
I am a little scared that it still might smear on me still, but I'm betting (literally betting hours of work and the time it took me to get this far already) that it will hold up after 3 coats. Cross your fingers!!
If you've fallen in love with Ruby Red Raven, Jr., stop by Exhale Unlimited Gallery in LA and snatch up! It's for sale as part of the #twitterartexhibit fundraiser.
Want to donate some art to Art Division for the #twitterartexhibit? They're an organization dedicated to training and supporting underserved youth (18-25) in L.A.’s Rampart District, an at-risk group within one of Los Angeles’ most densely populated and underserved communities. Through focused instruction, individualized tutoring and personal support, each student is given the tools they need to pursue higher education, achieve self-sufficiency and obtain careers in the arts. Kristine commissioned a stamp of a raven on a skull, and her husband's name as his Christmas present.
I designed and created this stamp for her. I love the contrast of the simplicity of the raven silhouette and the more complex skull design.

Yo! Welcome to my first video :) In this video you'll see my process of making Crossbill, a 3-layer reduction linocut print (aka suicide print) of a bird skeleton. I'll be talking about the relief printing technique, the tools I'm using, and the inspiration behind the print.
Sorry I had no idea that Flickr has a 3 min limit on videos when I uploaded. You can watch the full, 7-min version on Youtube: www.youtube.com/watch?v=1o4-z_0sa9U&t=15s

Robert Roberts of the Number 1 Rescue Squad, Number 6 Pit at the Tylorstown Collieries. Based on a photograph from 1914. This a hand pulled linocut, part of my series of prints honouring the coal miners of the Rhonnda Valleys, South Wales. These rescue guys must have been as hard as nails. ©2012 Julia Forsyth, Silent Frozen Exhale, block printing ink hand-printed on bleached mulberry paper, 8" x 10"
Silent Frozen Exhale is linocut print inspired by Spring Noel's "I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas" photo: flic.kr/p/aZJiYF. She captured this owl in a quiet winter moment of silence. The collector and I really liked this unique image and were so excited when Spring Noel gave me the okay to use her image as the photo reference for my commission linocut.
Usually owls have their eyes opened, but I liked that this barred owl looked like he was super-deep in thought. Shhh....
To see how I transferred another barred owl drawing from the paper to the block, here ya go: youtu.be/qTfp-Qgy8WY
To see how I got all the paper off the linoleum block once the another barred owl drawing was successfully transferred, here ya go: youtu.be/EASccCIIhfI
Curious to see how to carve a lino block? Take a look here: youtu.be/I5QuEq8pKnQ

A hand pulled linocut of a Cape buffalo, printed in 3 colours on a page from a book about safari hunting in the 1970s. Not a pastime I approve of but a very evocative read and a good base for a portrait of such a beautiful beast.
I was busy the last days, and finished the first 6 books in a new series that I call "Write it up!" - Unfortunately Etsy doesn't allow exclamation marks in the title so they will be called pencil stamp journals when I list them there.
They are already available in my own shop.
All books share the following properties:
* Fabric covers
* Pencil stamp on the front cover, many of them also carry the words: Write it up!
* 192 pages from a creme white paper
* page size is about 5″ x 6.3″ or 12.5cm x 16cm
* 4 pouches at the end to hold ephemeral stuff like cinema entry card, business cards, dried flowers, or whatever you would like to keep with your journal.
