A modified Remembrance Sunday service took place in Hong Kong on 8 November 2020 with fewer than normal participants. Wreaths were laid at the Cenotaph by members of the Hong Kong Ex-Servicemen’s Association for the various organisations which provided the wreaths in order to limit the number of people in the central area. It was one of the few remembrance services in the world in 2020 which the public were able to attend.
After the handover of Hong Kong to the People’s Republic of China in 1997, Remembrance Sunday is still observed in at the Cenotaph in Hong Kong. The wreathing laying and service are privately organised by the Hong Kong Ex-Servicemen’s Association and the Royal British Legion Hong Kong and China Branch. The commemoration includes a multi-faith memorial service with participation by various religions including the Anglican Church, the Roman Catholic Church, the Eastern Orthodox Church, the Buddhist community, the Taoist community, the Muslim community and the Sikh community.
Although Hong Kong ceased to be part of the Commonwealth in 1997, the memorial service still resembles those in many other Commonwealth countries. The service includes the sounding of "Last Post", two minutes of silence, the sounding of "Reveille", the laying of wreaths, and prayers, and ends with a recitation of the "Ode of Remembrance". Wreaths are laid by representatives of the government, diplomats, ex-servicemen’s organisations and civic organisations. In 2020 and 2021 the Hong Kong Police Band provided a bugler and two bagpipers and uniformed youth organisations provided four sentries.
Prior to COVID restrictions the entire Hong Kong Police Band provided music and a Guard of Honour was formed by the Hong Kong Sea Cadet Corps, Hong Kong Adventure Corps and Hong Kong Air Cadet Corps in ceremonial uniform. These uniformed youth organisations have carried on after 1997 in the British military tradition.
