With the cathedral visible on the skyline 66752 powers away from Carlisle towards Scotby with 4N03 1123 Carlisle Yard-Clitheroe. Already the largest city by area in England, these western outskirts are now sprawling with new-build housing.

While doing a bit of night photography I decided to push the D3s a bit. Normally when taking Milky Way shots I use 6400 ISO. This image was taken at ISO 12800 for 30 sec. to gather as much light as possible. I did need to use a bit of noise reduction but there was considerably more detail in the sky than the similar image taken at ISO 6400 (see inside). Both images were taken for 30 sec. at f2.8.

Next stop ISO 102,400 but I'm afraid I will blow out the Milky Way! ;-)

US-citizen Todd Hido (1968) inspired me for this series. Much of Hido's earlier work involves photographs of urban and suburban housing across the U.S. Hido accidentally approached what would be one of his best-known themes. When driving at night on the West Coast, he started photographing houses in different neighborhoods. The houses often seemed isolated and had mostly in common the presence of a window with the light on. From this research resulted his book House Hunting, published in 2001.

Posicionar, iluminar y disparar unas 6horas. Editar, corregir y ajustar unas 2h.

The nearby weir marks the river's usual tidal limit and is the lowest on the Thames.

Having made the turn after crossing the Cheyenne River (running along the base of the hillside in the distance), the four motors leading train #M-RCHU are now in launch mode as they begin to tackle Wall Hill. Well sort of, they at least sound like they are in launch mode because they are tackling Wall Hill, which is the ruling grade on the RCP&E's mainline. So while they will not exceed the 10 mph limit on this portion of line, they will be running all out (RPM's wise) dragging this eastbound up to Wall.

Happiness is only part of a well-rounded life. A more comprehensive experience of living also includes things like sorrow, shame, curiosity, confusion, boredom, anger and fear.

When we aspire only to be happy or comfortable, we narrow not just our experience of life, but our understanding or ourselves and others. We limit our appreciation of the bigger picture of what it means to exist.

We chose only to walk, rather than learning also to fly.

When we overcome the fears, the rancors, the failures ... when we are we themselves ... where our limits are?

This isn't a staged reenactment. On many of the former USSR's less modernized lines, rail traffic is still governed by flags at stations and yard limits. In this scene, a switchman raises a yellow flag to indicate 'proceed', as 2-10-0 L-3958 enters the yard at Ostashkov.

To stimulate tourism in this economically depressed part of the country, in fall of 2018 Russian Railways made the decision to operate the regular local passenger train (6697/6698) from Bologoye to Ostashkov with steam power on Saturdays. While the idea behind it is to increase tourism, make no mistake - this a regular passenger train whose primary job is to serve as a form of local transportation. The vast majority of passengers aren't tourists, but little old babushkas just trying to get from village to village with their jars of mushrooms and pickled tomatoes. This is as authentic of an experience as you can get with a steam-hauled passenger train in the 21st century. The train takes three hours to traverse its 70-mile route and travels at speeds of 30-40 mph, making 13 stops in various villages along the way.
