One of my images from the advanced lighting class taught by Bob Harrington. I learned so much in one session, and he makes everything look so easy. This is something I should have done sooner, and I eagerly await each week's class.

I haven't had that much practice with silhouettes, let alone at night. So this was definitely a learning experience. I wanted to capture a dark figure only slightly outlined by light, but it was difficult to also capture the street lamp in the picture at the same time.

After toying around with composition, two external lights and a little blue tint, I was finally apple to get to a happy place. That is, a happy place far, far away from Jack the Ripper.

Ran Nik Color Efex Pro 3.0 Glamour Glow on this one.

As part of my final project for JOU4603 Specialized Journalistic Photography, I used one external flash to create dramatic split lighting with an emphasis on Rembrandt light. It was a technique I had wanted to practice for a while, so even though there were stronger subject matter shots, this shoot was a lighting milestone for me.

I wanted to make it as British as possible, with London Underground socks, pinkys up tea-drinking and, of course, the Union Jack shirt/sweater duo for the "Jack of All Trades" series.

Deng was in last Sunday's lighting class. She's got a great edgy look, probably the edgiest model I've ever shot. Looking forward to the next shoot.

I found this cello in the drawing room at my school I figured it need another use other then being drawn so I took some pictures of it. Turned out better then I expected because the cello is beaten to crap.

Hope you like,

The Light Is All Photography | my best photos | most "interesting" | most faved

Model "SounLeip" (Lee for short) at Lighting Workshop #3, South Puget Sound Photography Studio, Puyallup, Washington, October 12, 2011.

Earlier in our hour of practice, someone set up a light directly behind one of the blonde models, creating a beautiful light surrounding the hair. There's also, of course, a light in front of the model, to the left of the photographer, to fill in the face. All evening I kept waiting for Lee to be available for this light setup, because I wanted to see how it would look with a darker complexioned, darker haired model. I wasn't disappointed! Lee has red highlights dyed into her hair, and the backlight captured these beautifully. I also set up a fan in front of the model, helpfully held by Kathy, the studio owner, to add some motion to the hair. Throw in the beautiful blue feather earring, the great expression, the over-the-shoulder pose, and just a hint of tattoo on the left arm, and this is a favorite photo.

From my studio lighting class in St. Petersburg

Exercise for lighting class. This was taken using two bare tungsten bulbs in cheap reflectors (got them at Home Depot). The one illuminating the left side of my face was a 150w bulb clamped to a ladder about 3-4 feet down. The one illuminating the right side of my face was a 75w bulb held in my right hand just out of the shot.

Here's another shot of fellow photographer and Flickr friend Michelle with a different lighting setup. I added a lucis art layer to bring out the details in her hair and did a B&W conversion.

Here's a color shot of fellow photographer Liz from the Tye Studios lighting class.
