After my lighting class, I decided to experiment a little bit with different kinds of background lighting. My first experiments were with trying to create a deliberately dark background. Even with a set of white closet doors behind me, I could get it pretty dark. Then I tried experimenting with washing out the background completely.
Here I took two stobes and pointed them at the back wall. Then I used a reflector off camera to the right so I'd not be totally overwhelmed by the light behind me. It was a bit tricky to avoid lens flare because of how bright the light was coming directly into the camera, but found if I angled it down a bit that resolved it.
So anyhow, that's the result. It was hard to measure the light level I found. It kept showing that I needed to widen the aperture but then my face would get too washed out. Just hard to measure with that much light flooding in from around me.

Julie was our model for one of my recent studio lighting classes in Puyallup. I really like the way this image turned our -- the lighting is really nice on her face, and the black background works nicely both with her black and white outfit and her blonde hair.
