Students at Croydon Sixth Form College (6F) have this year achieved an excellent set of results across both academic and vocational courses on offer at the College. This year saw a 95% pass rate at A Level and 99% pass rate for other Level 3 qualifications such as BTEC and NVQ courses.

St Margaret, Margaretting, Essex

I'd come down into south Essex on what they quaintly call round here 'Ride and Stride Day', to explore churches normally kept locked without a keyholder. It had been raining since midnight, and when I got off the train in Chelmsford at about 8am there was a gloomy, penetrating drizzle, giving something of the effect of cycling underwater. I headed south down the lanes to the outskirts of Ingatestone, where I found Margaretting parish church locked, but with a keyholder notice.I had arrived an hour before the open churches event was due to start, so I suppose that it was no surprise to discover that the church was not open. Mind you, they didn't seem particularly geared up for it.

Uniquely in England, you reach Margaretting churchyard across a level crossing, and as this is on the busy Liverpool Street to Essex/Ipswich/Norwich line, there are trains every few minutes. The keyholder is on the opposite side of the tracks to the church, which led to a certain amount of fiddling about as I waited in each direction several times for the barriers to open. The tower, like Blackmore, is an aisled wooden structure, splendid even in the drizzle, but theinterior is almost entirely late 19th Century in character. However, the star of the show, and a surprising one, is a 14th Century stained glass tree of Jesse, reset in the east window. It put me in mind of Ste-Chapelle in Paris. Most unusual in such a cosy setting.

Watching this guy and several others fly and dive around was a real treat! I cropped this one to get it close but I still liked the detail and reflection on the choppy water.

Gokteik Viaduct, made in 1901, Nawnghkio, Shan, Myanmar 102 meters high/37 meter span

Gokteik bridge can be reached by taking a train from Mandalay or Pyin U Lwin north towards Nawnghkio where the bridge is located about 3 miles (5 kms) further east. A round trip ticket from Mandalay to the bridge costs around $8 for foreigners. Burmese soldiers are stationed on the train as well as on top of and underneath the bridge to prevent any potential attacks.

The largest railway trestle in the world upon its completion in 1901, the Gokteik Viaduct is the highest bridge in Myanmar. Located in the center of the country about 60 miles (100 kms) northeast of the largest city of Mandalay, the rail line was constructed as a way for the British Empire to expand their influence in the region. Constructed when the country was originally called Burma, the bridge was designed and fabricated by the Pennsylvania Steel Company and shipped overseas. Construction was overseen by Sir Arthur Rendel, engineer for the Burma Railroad Company. Stretching 2,260 feet (689 mtrs) from end to end, the viaduct has 14 towers that span 40 feet (12 mtrs) along with a double tower 80 feet (24 mtrs) long. These 15 towers support 10 deck truss spans of 120 feet (37 mtrs) along with six plate girder spans 60 feet (18 mtrs) long and an approach span of 40 feet (12 mtrs). Many sources have put the height of the bridge at 820 feet (250 mtrs). This is supposedly a measurement to the river level as it flows underground through a tunnel at the point it passes underneath the trestle. The true height of the bridge as measured from the rail deck to the ground on the downstream side of the tallest tower is 335 feet (102 mtrs).

On Friday, 1 April 2022, the Polish National Day took place at the College of Europe in Natolin.

The Natolin Campus transformed into a landscape of a Polish fairytale with snow surrounding the buildings' premises.

The National Day revolved around the concept of solidarity. The Polish students proposed a transversal version of the country, showing all shapes of Polish identity and Polish solidarity from different moments of the State’s history.

The night before the National Day, the students had the chance to watch an interesting movie - "Jack Strong" – particularly relevant because of the courage of a man, Colonel Ryszard KUKLIŃSKI, who prevented a potential nuclear confrontation during the Cold War.

Throughout the entire day and during the weekend, the students on campus could enjoy several art exhibitions. At first, the Polish students proposed a series of portraits of relevant figures that somehow contributed to the said solidarity – among them Irena SENDLEROWA and Martyna WOJCIECHOWSKA. Later, students could watch a series of ancient pictures of Warsaw, granted by the Museum of Warsaw and representing the city from the end-XIX century to the beginning of the XX century. Additionally, there was an exhibition of Polish posters from the modernist era. Lastly, students could be taken on a fascinating temporal trip thanks to an exhibition of items and objects from the Polish People’s Republic (PPR) era, provided by the Muzeum Życia w PRL.

The PPR exhibition was the ground for the very first attraction of the national day. Polish students introduced their colleagues to the daily life and culture in the communist times in Poland through a workshop, illustrating the way of saying and the scenes from the movie MiÅ›.

After that, students could enjoy a wonderful dinner based on Polish cuisine from the XVII century in the campus restaurant, magnificently decorated to allow students to have a full immersion experience. There was also a possibility to see cloths of that time, with some of the Polish students dressed in aristocratic clothes and folkloristic ones.

The main event of the Polish National Day was the High Level Panel about solidarity nowadays and as a national trait in Poland, with the participation of two exceptional guests: the Mayor of Warsaw Capital City, Mr Rafał TRZASKOWSKI and the former EU Ambassador to Ukraine, H.E. Jan TOMBIŃSKI. The guests were greeted and introduced by Madame Vice-Rector, Mrs Ewa OŚNIECKA-TAMECKA.

Lastly, Natolin students enjoyed a concert of Polish jazz performed by the internationally prized group Jazz Combo Volta. The performance was accompanied by a degustation of best selected Polish alcohols, particularly a rare type of mead.

During the National Day, the Polish students at Natolin Natolin's aimed at presenting all shapes of “Polishness" and Polish national identity to the community.

A beautiful if somewhat cold Somerset Levels for the first frost of 2017. It was a tad chilly at -6degC (a very dry cold for a change) but well worth a quick trip around taking in RSPB Ham Wall, SWT Westhay, Telham Moor and RSPB Greylake before heading off to work.

I gave most of the control potentiometers a good squirt of propan-2-ol. But this level control was intermittent so I dismantled it for a more thorough cleaning. The front track is moved out of the way and the wipers on their spindle removed.

Learning Revolution: How Neuroscience Can Change a Nation’s Mathematical Future

10:20 am - 11:20 am MDT on Monday, June 29, 2015

There is a big elephant standing in most math classrooms: the idea that only some students will do well in math. While parents, students, and many teachers believe it, the latest brain research tells us that this is wrong and that the messages we carry around in our heads about our own potential change the functioning of our brains. Until we transform the messages given in classrooms, homes, and through the media, the widespread math failure and severe inequalities that harm our country will continue. Additionally, math instruction needs an overhaul. When it is taught as a narrow, speed-based, procedural subject, only a few students can engage or do well, but when we open mathematics and teach creative, visual, deep, and beautiful math, everything changes. Students are excited, they enjoy math, achieve at high levels, and continue on to mathematical futures.

Daniel Dalton (extreme left) wheels away after scoring for Daisy Hill at Townfield against North West Counties League First Division rivals Barnton. Dalton's 74th-minute goal completed the visitors' fightback from 2-0 down. Then, with four minutes left, they scored again to clinch a 3-2 win. It was league newcomers Barnton's fifth straight defeat and leaves the Villagers propping up the table.

This layout is based on the October Week 4 sketch challenge at Let's Get Sketchy (letsgetsketchy.blogspot.com/).

This page is also entered in Simon Says Stamp Flickr Challenge 31 "Anything Goes" (www.flickr.com/groups/simonsaysstamp). I used Simon Says "All Boy" stamp set to create the game controllers, which I colored with copic markers. I used the packaging technique with distress inks for the background.

The Echo Park pattern papers were very similar to the Color Challenge 32 at MFT Card Challenges (www.cardchallenges.com/), although I did change the orange to red with a copic marker. Also the title was created with My Favorite Things stamp set Level Up.
