One of the problems of rebuilding a railway today is having to cope with all the trains that still have to run, with little in the way of diversionary routes to help.

Leveling Leg Mod after Reuben Krabbe - his first version - he's now got two versions! (In his version 2, the normal setting geometry is compromised and the resistance to the strut attachment slipping is not 'absolute' - still considering that one - have got some ideas.)

I find my MSE 'Light (Wt) Heavy (Duty) triple riser' aluminium stand (387490) (3.54 m) pretty well perfect for a full baby pin stand (i.e. strong enough to handle a Grip Head with all that that implies). And it's light weight. Except, especially outside, it would be nice to have a leveling leg option.

Traditional leveling leg solutions extend & lower one leg, meaning that single leg becomes the downhill leg and ends up taking more weight than its piers. Also the footprint diameter is modestly reduced.

Reuben Krabbe's Mod, OTOH, raises the adjusted leg which typically results in it bearing slightly less than a normal 1/3rd share. Also, it doesn't add weight. When deployed, the footprint diameter increases slightly!

My experience suggests that a single extra hole, c 10 to 12 cm higher than the original offers great leveling range and flexibility on this and other full sized horizontal strut stands (footprint 43 in diameter). Varying the leg spread also varies the leveling action substantially. Outside, I'd usually lose the wheels or lock them radially out to maximize the footprint. This approach does not work well on stairs - but there's a better way of mounting a lightstand half way up a flight of stairs.

My choice of new pin was a marine grade 6 X 50 mm drop nose pin. (The UK's 'Seasure' is the best brand.) Lighter stands would use a 5 mm version. The drop nose is itself spring loaded and my mod adds a short length of rubber tubing to act as a gentle compression spring, removing any chance that this mod would 'self release'. It's more secure, IMO, than the original simple ny-loc nuts. Matthews added two shaped spacing pieces which could be easy to lose. Accordingly these are now tethered to prevent loss while engaging the leveling option. If your stand has washers, I suggest losing those and substituting a 10 cm strip of thin stiff plastic with a suitable hole at both ends.

Ensure that the stand is truly vertical - critical if using a boom.

I now have two full sized stands with this mod/pin - I remain, 6 months & counting, very pleased so far . . .

I've also tried just using a car leveling ramp under a normal stand's lowest leg - that can work well too, but I prefer Reuben's idea.

The track diagram mounted above the block shelf in Whittington Low Level signal box. Monday 7th September 1987

Whittington Low Level signal box was located by the Up Main line alongside Whittington Road level crossing, and was a McKenzie & Holland Type 3 design that opened in 1881 for the Great Western Railway Company. A replacement 20 lever Great Western Railway Company Stud frame installed in 1912 and at some time a small 2 lever Great Western Railway Company frame was installed to control the wicket gates. On 1st July 1924 the former Cambrian Railways Whittington station was renamed Whittington High Level and the original Great Western Railway station was renamed Whittington Low Level, presumably the signal boxes were renamed at the same time. Closure came on 14th March 1992 to allow the level crossing to be converted an automatic half-barrier crossing supervised by Gobowen North signal box, which was operational from 21st June 1992. The absolute block section was extended to between Gobowen North and Haughton Sidings signal boxes

Funny story. I was up on the top level changing some of the setting on my camera, when all of a sudden some one grabbed me. It was a Japanese girl. She ask me if she could take a photo with me. I said sure, why not. The next thing I know, I'm the main attraction. Every female there wanted to a photo with me. I think there were 10 of them. I'm talking girls from 6 years old to 50. i had to use my camera to shield my ass from one old lady. They really went nuts when I said that I was from CA.

Camden Market is right on so many levels.

Dundee United won to send St Mirren into the Scottish Championship's relegation play-off spot.

Thomas Mikkelsen fired United ahead as St Mirren players claimed for a foul but Gary Mackenzie headed the Buddies level before the break.

Tony Andreu struck a free-kick from inside the box for the Tangerines' second only for Josh Todd to equalise.

But Blair Spittal's late shot gave the hosts the victory they craved, leaving St Mirren two points off bottom.

Ray McKinnon's United, who remain third and are assured of a promotion play-off place, took the lead in controversial circumstances. Striker Mikkelsen went in with a high boot on Mackenzie but referee Craig Charleston waved play on and the Finn hammered the ball high into the roof of the visitors' goal.

Mackenzie had to receive treatment at the side of the pitch with the entire St Mirren bench, including manager Jack Ross, furious by the call from the officials.

Buddies captain Stephen McGinn had a half-chance for an equaliser with a header from a Lewis Morgan cross but there was little pace on the ball, which was gathered by Cammy Bell in the home goal.

Stevie Mallan was again showing the type of skills that has brought about interest from English clubs and was inches away with a free-kick that ended up in the Dundee United goal's side netting.

St Mirren continued to drive forward and deservedly equalised before the break. Mallan whipped in a free-kick at pace from the right-hand side that was met by the head of Mackenzie and Bell was beaten.

Simon Murray crashed a shot off the St Mirren crossbar from 25 yards and United then regained the lead in bizarre circumstances. Keeper Billy O'Brien picked up a pass-back inside his own box under pressure from Murray.

The free-kick was slipped to Andreu, who drilled through a ruck of defenders.

The visitors pushed more and more men forward looking for the equaliser and they were rewarded for their persistent pressure when substitute Todd hooked home from 12 yards out.

However, the home side took the lead for the third time in the final minute when Spittal hammered home from 20 yards.

It was a cruel end to the game for St Mirren, who have two games left to get out of relegation trouble.
