Everyone rises to their own level...

Long Moor Drove on the Somerset Levels between the Poldens and the Mendips.

Something different with fill flash provided by a second hand Speedlight SB600 off the bay that is usually deployed for baby pics.

A self indulgent reminds-me-of-childhood shot, but still part of an occasional Somerset series. The levels are lunar industrial landscape pretending to be countryside and I want to bring that out. A couple of farmers stopped in their Land Rover to tell me about a couple of deer they'd spotted, assuming I'd love to stalk them Nikon style, and probably to check I wasn't a wrong 'un. Not sure they'd understand about me taking snaps of bridges and endless sky.

No graphics, proper job boy.

Towneley Level Crossing signal box located alongside the Down East Lancs line by Moseley Road level crossing in Burnley. Tuesday 6th September 2011

Towneley West signal box was a Saxby & Farmer type 9 design fitted with a 26 lever Saxby & Farmer frame built in 1878 for the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Company by signalling contractors Saxby & Farmer. The lever frame was replaced at some time by a 24 lever Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Company Tappet frame, and the signal box was renamed Towneley Station on 3rd December 1951 when the 624 yard distant Towneley Colliery Sidings signal box was closed. The signal box was renamed Towneley Level Crossing Frame and reduced to a non block post on 7th October 1973 controlling the adjacent level crossing and a crossover when signalling passed to Preston signal box. The lever frame was replaced by a British Railways London Midland Region individual function switch console commissioned on 23rd September 1979, and the signal box was fitted with new window and cladding circa 1990. The signal box was renamed Towneley Level Crossing by the time a replacement Unipart Rail individual function switch console was commissioned on 29th January 2007

Note - although the name change on 3rd December 1951 was amended in the September 1956 sectional appendix supplement and shown in subsequent sectional appendices, the Preston signal box - East Lancashire Re-signalling notice (SN.1330G) shows the box as still being named Towneley West

This dilapidated and neglected sign is long redundant following closure of the line but serves as a reminder of what once lay ahead.

I wanted a Farncombe shot of the 42, but wanting to see the evening 1720 route 22 trip out of Guildford meant I only really had the option to snap Arriva Guildford & West Surrey Dennis Dart SLF 3192 (P192 LKJ) again!

I made it to Godalming station just in time for a torrential downpour, and sheltered in Farncombe station during a following thunderstorm.

But things calmed down and I was able to go and snap the bus, although it was still raining a bit, so I didn't venture far from the station - so it's seen here crossing Farncombe station level crossing.

Tempers were fraying a bit here, as the gates had gone down (for quite a while), gone up, let about three cars through, and then gone down again! They then re-opened, allowing 3192 across (about three vehicles either direction), before closing again!

A trio of tripods with built-in bullseye levels used for leveling the tripod by adjusting the length of its legs.

If the tripod is not level, the angle of the camera changes when aimed in a different direction.

A changing angle is a nuisance in many circumstances and a major problem when shooting panoramas.

(If the tripod is level the individual panorama shots maintain a constant angle and form a strait line.

If the tripod is not level the individual panorama shots are at different angles and form an arch or valley.

This means each shot must be rotated for stitching and the entire panorama must be severely cropped to remove the overall curve.)

Depending on the tripod's head; the camera may require a level of its own.

If your tripod does not have a built-in level, a fence post level (which can be purchased at a building supply store for about $6) can be attached the the tripods center post.

(The post hole level shown in first comment below is red)

(There is also a hot-shoe level on top of the camera)

Nothing beats a clear day with an Eagle in the air.

About 3 hours in now, we had heard rumors that this mine had multiple levels but untill now it was all on one. Through the curtains lay another level as promised!

We dicided decending further was best left for another trip, another day.
