"I grew up breaking stones. As a young person, I realized that carving is an interesting process, one that also helps make good friends"

For me this photo is a lesson in patience I learned from Sam Abell, and that is to stay with it.

I saw the hole carved in the rock and I thought it was interesting with the background of the building, but I waited.

The artist placed a level in the opening and I thought that was a nice add, but I kept waiting.

A gust of wind came along and hit the level and boom I had a shot.

Sculpture Nova Scotia has invited a group of experienced stone artists to create large-scale works and demonstrate their skill in the open air on the Halifax Waterfront. Presented in partnership with Waterfront Development, this creation process forms the core of a month-long, outdoor sculpture-arts festival from Sept. 19 to October 17 in Salter.

A brief, "behind the scenes" look at the secret base of the League of Heroes.

From left to right:

LEFT - The Lab / Work Station: A section of the base that is set aside of experimenting on new cutting edge technologies, studying clues left by villains to solve crimes, and this area can also act as a first-aid center in times of emergency.

CENTER - The Armory: A high-tech armory is situated in the sub-basement below Level H. Using the bases computer, a hero can cycle through a vast underground vault of costumes, armor, and weapons which are hydraulically lifted to the glass doors for easy access. Currently on display are the Mk I and Mk II Silver Sentry suits of armor.

RIGHT - The Super Computer: Situated by the vault hatch entrance is the League's super computer. It can process files from law enforcement databases, play media, and responds to voice command from League members. All of the bases various functions can be coordinated from the computer.

My original teaser for "Level H" before some spring cleaning:

View from the sky bar at level 33 of the Traders Hotel. As usual: no tripods allowed. Luckily, I had my littel gorillapod with me and could make a view shots before it was discovered.

This one is made from 2 raw images. I created 3 exposures for each and stiched the 6 images in Hugin in HDR mode.

Trough of Bowland, Lancashire, where the sheep are usually up in the hills. They're probably making the most of the lush grass before the winter sets in.

I was surprised still to see so many green leaves, just a touch of autumn setting in on the trees on the right hand side.

UPY #711 is going over Hubbard/Green and the JFK Expressway as it heads back to California Avenue with two empties from Blommer Chocolate. It is quite impressive how much the Interstate system has altered the landscape here. Notice the rusted C&NW herald under the last hopper.

Obviously the location was graced with a station in times gone by.

This pic was taken when I was taking pics of Wood Ducks and Mandarin Ducks in the same pond and this Otter had kinda told me get out of here!! He or She had had enough of me on that morning!! No not mess with a River Otter!! Be careful they will attack!!

Taken 7 months after closure looking west towards Manchester at Torside level crossing in the Longdendale Valley, on the western end of the old Sheffield, Ashton-under-Lyne & Manchester Rly which opened in 1845, known as the Woodhead Route, home to the EM1 class 76 and EM2 class 77 DC electric locomotives.

This line closed as a through route just after 5am on the 18th July 1981 after the passage of 6M10 Harwich-Trafford Park Speedlink hauled by 76006 and 76014.

Today you can walk along here as it is now part of the 215 mile long coast to coast Trans Pennine Trail, with this section known as the Longdendale Trail.

Now I do an urban level crossing. And this one is rather nice in the city of Lincoln complete with foot bridge.

Grey sky. Grey mud. Grey train. The brightness level raised a tiny bit around lunchtime but not by much. 43301 heads the 1S51 12.25 Plymouth- Edinburgh with 43304 on the rear. A week ago I may not have bothered turning up at this picturesque location on a dullish day but with the announcement a few days ago that Cross Country would be withdrawing HSTs from their services on 23-10-23, two XC HSTs due within five minutes of each other and my work schedule putting me in the area this was a good opportunity to make the most of it as they won't be around much longer. With the announcement in December that GWR would be standing down their HSTs at the end of this year there was the comfort of knowing that XC HSTs would still be around but this is not the case now. As of the start of 04-03-23 power car 43301 had 100 engine hours left . Well it's probably done a quarter of that with a run from Edinburgh to St Erth and back to Edinburgh and could be gone imminently. Sadly there is an air of finality around all the HSTs down west now.

The next floor contains a movie theater, also not part of the film. The entrance is barricaded, probably to lock some zombies in the hall. Didn’t work too well, some zombies are still free and found a pretty snack. The poor guy shot his brains out, because he couldn’t stand the pressure. By the way, his eyeballs also couldn’t stand the pressure (when he pulled the trigger) and popped out. Don’t try that at home, kids.

Look at the poster and what film they’re showing.

One of the three level tram crossings to be removed in August this year and replaced by over overpasses here at Marion Road and Cross Road. Morphett Rd will get an underpass for other traffic. All these activities will undertaken simultaneously whilst the tram services reduced to the city of Adelaide only. The depot will be disconnected from network A temporary stabling site will be at South Tce - King William Rd in the parklands.© Henk Graalman 2025

haydock foundry 0-6-0wt bellerophon of 1874 trundles over a level crossing on the foxfield railway with the vintage north staffs train

it is hard to imagine that in it's heyday this locomotive worked both coal trains from haydock to northwich and holiday specials from haydock to blackpool

The 3 of them are pretty chilled out with sheep .. and the sheep are pretty chilled with them .. whilst Auntie Elk would love to .. she knows she's not allowed, Paddy's interested .. but follows Auntie Elk's lead and always comes back to heel .. Mist .... is usually nowhere to be seen (scared of anything with 4 legs especially if it looks at her!)
