Stand atop Signal Hill and let your soul be stirred by the crack of muskets and the roar of cannon fire. Discover the story of how British and French soldiers battled fiercely to control this strategic location. Explore the iconic Cabot Tower and experience a view of St. John's and the North Atlantic that is truly spectacular.
As its name implies, centuries before the advent of ship-to-shore radio, signalman perched on Signal Hill surveyed the ocean for ships headed toward the port of St. John's. Flag signals flown on the hill communicated the names of arriving ships to those who inhabited the harbourfront below.
Take a journey back in time to 1901 when the famous Guglielmo Marconi made communications history at Signal Hill by receiving the first ever transatlantic wireless signal. Nfld and Labrador Tourism

The Harlequin Duck Histrionicus histrionicus [...] gets its English name from characters in Italian comedy that wear masks and have oddly painted costumes.
The colourful male, or drake, is one of the most attractive of sea ducks. [...] the adult male is striking and brightly coloured. It is characterized by slate blue plumage, chestnut flanks, and streaks of white on its head and body. The most distinctive markings on the head are a crescent-shaped white patch at the base of the short bill and a round white ear patch. The belly is slate grey. [...].
The female has plain, brownish-grey colouring that is darkest on its head, a white patch extending below and in front of each eye and a prominent white ear patch. The belly is white with brown speckles. Hinterland Who's Who

Nymphaeaceae /ˌnɪmfiːˈeɪsiː/ is a family of flowering plants.
Members of this family are commonly called water lilies and live as rhizomatous aquatic herbs in temperate and tropical climates around the world. The family contains eight large-flowered genera with about 70 species.[2] The genus Nymphaea contains about 35 species in the Northern Hemisphere.[2] The genus Victoria contains two species of giant water lilies endemic to South America.[2] Water lilies are rooted in soil in bodies of water, with leaves and flowers floating on the surface. The leaves are round, with a radial notch in Nymphaea and Nuphar, but fully circular in Victoria. [...]. Wikipedia.

Emerged in the 14th century as "heels over head", which is more literally accurate, as "head over heels" is the more standard state of being. "Heels over head" evolved into "head over heels" in common use departing its literal meaning, probably for reasons of phrasal elegance. Wikipedia
Bluebird Estates on a gorgeous early September day.
Anyway, that's it for this year as we have now winterized our acreage and stored away all the colourful signs of summer. We even pulled out all of our beautiful summer flowers and will soon be driving back home to Vancouver.
Enjoy your Saturday!

"Somersaulting behaviour of Canada Geese On ist February
1970 we [...] witnessed an extraordinary performance by about 200 Canada Geese Branta canadensis [...]..
By far the largest proportion of the Canada Geese, [...] were
indulging in an elaborate routine which none of us had ever seen
before. By plunging their heads into the water and somersaulting
forwards they would turn on their backs, with belly upwards and feet
clawing the air. This position was deliberately maintained for some
seconds when the birds, by simply rolling sideways, righted themselves
without difficulty. Once again a flurry of body shaking and vigorous
preening followed. [...]."

The Seymour Demonstration Forest: A Vancouver Hidden Gem
It’s hard to believe that minutes from the noise and chaos of downtown Vancouver is an alternate, carbon-free civilization inhabited only by cyclists, rollerbladers and pedestrians. But it’s no dream: It’s North Vancouver’s Seymour Demonstration Forest.
This 5,668-hectare park, formally known as the Lower Seymour Conservation Reserve, is actually a bit difficult to find, [...] but it’s worth hunting down. [...]. This is because the main draw of the park is the Seymour Valley Trailway: a 10-kilometre-long paved path that threads its way through one of the most gorgeous – and bike-friendly – stretches of forest in the area.
