High school lacrosse, Middlebury, Vt.

for Paul Wong.....

He's a musician I care much about. But I'm not sure if he feels so. He's cold, but he seems to be burning in the heart.

Sorry, I don't know what I'm trying to say. Feel it if you can.

Eddie Ramirez

From hardship to OHSU

On the day of Eddie Ramirez's orientation to Portland State, his mother came to him in tears, devastated to tell him that his financial aid had fallen through and they couldn't pay for college.

"I hadn't even started, and already I had to drop out and settle for what I could afford, like community college or something," Ramirez remembers.

But a teacher from Ramirez's high school, where he was valedictorian, paid for his first year of college, setting the PSU senior on a path to the elite school of dentistry at Oregon Health & Science University, which he now attends.

Ramirez, first in his family to finish high school, later won diversity scholarships and the Mount Hood Medical Center Foundation Healthcare Professional Scholarship. He's been working to pay his fortunes forward, in part by recruiting Latino students for PSU; his goal is to help Latino students overcome economic and documentation issues to advance to higher education.

"I'm a first-generation student, an immigrant to the U.S., raised without a lot of resources," says Ramirez, whose parents emigrated from Mexico when he was 1 year old. "I've been in that worst place. But there are ways to get out."

After years of internships geared toward dentistry and a degree in organismal biology, chemistry minor and pre-dental studies, Ramirez hopes to have a private practice and a nonprofit to provide dental care to low-income families.

"Because of my circumstances people always told me not to apply, not to consider it," he says. Now he has a goal of opening his own clinic.

I read these comics over and over as a child: slim A4 volumes of bandes désinées translated from the French. What strikes me now is how lovingly they seek to mimic the world, gestures, characters and interactions of the actual Hollywood Western - John Ford's especially, no doubt. All these corny sequences seem direct homages to scenes with John Wayne and Victor McLaglen (and here, why not, that random sweetheart Angie Dickinson) -- perhaps written and drawn by cavalry fans from almost the same generation as the Cahiers directors and critics whose quirky romance with Hollywood issued in so many of the most enduring themes and tones of the last fifty years.

...Let he who is without sin assimilate the first--no, wait, that can't be right.

Seen at Quail Ridge Books. Generally a pretty good bookstore, but I'm afraid their religion section leaves a bit to be desired.

(Disclaimer: while the above is true in general, I have not read any of Mr. Borg's works; he may or may not be a part of what I'm talking about. Still cracked me up to see this on the spine of a book, though.)

My sewing room has south-facing windows. I need to get some shades to keep my fabric from fading, but I am thankful to have the sun shining in when I'm in there working.

——Let's Relax

A few hundred protesters began walking at noon to complete the four miles from Bourbonnais to the Kankakee County Courthouse. While sitting on the front lawn, they listened to activists talk about their experiences and advice for standing up against what they perceived as injustice. They then returned to their starting point for a round trip walk of about eight miles.
