We're studying about the American Revolution right now by reading the six-book series about Felicity (American Girl). In conjunction, we do hands-on projects.

This lesson was about how the colonists liked citrus fruit, and how they would try to start their own plants. This is the top of a pineapple plant in a mixture of sand and soil. We'll see if it grows any roots.

Hampton Roads teacher shows off their classroom experiment during the 2023 Teacher Night—for elementary and middle school teachers—hosted by the Science Education Department at Jefferson Lab on Apr. 19, 2023. (Aileen Devlin | Jefferson Lab)

Often described as a "science fair for teachers,” this event allows educators to see new methods for teaching physical science concepts, win door prizes for their classrooms and earn one recertification point.

My photo essay is an illustrated example of how to introduce division to students. Have extra Halloween candy left over? Have some stuffed animals or action figures in your classroom? Use them for a concrete example of division! Give students sample problems to model. For example, this group had 30 pieces of candy. Students equally divided up the candy and figured out that Arthur, D.W. and Francine each got 10 pieces of candy. Most of students grasped this concept quickly, so they worked together to make up their own division word problems. They quickly learned the connection with multiplication and division!

My students are beginning an Exploration Unit. They need to know why explorers traveled around the world.

Some explorers were in search of exotic spices. Tomorrow we are going to do a spice activity.

I started by finding small paper containers and numbering them.

Continuing with our Winter Tree Study, we used Stockmar modelling beeswax and made little sculptures of our deciduous tree observations. This time we added the river with its snowy bank and ice floating by.

These medallions make a great addition to our winter nature table. I’d like to make one for spring, summer and autumn with her too to add to our nature table as the seasons change.

Anyone interested in swapping seasonal beeswax medallions?
