At the train station of Arnhem this morning, Jan 17. Freezing and still quite of bit of snow on the way over there from Rotterdam, but train services have been pretty good despite the winter weather. I was on time for my meeting in this city!
In the years before this kind of weather would play havoc with all public transport. I guess we are starting to benefit from lessons learned!
Lesson 5 didn't go very well and I haven't had the time or chance or willingness to work on that or anything else lately. As the sun kindly showed up today, I decided to go out for some more street shots. But I found this little park while wandering and it made me realize I was tired...I was tired of the people, the streets, the buildings...that I needed some rest. I realized Nature is something that's almost absent in my stream and I haven't really given any serious thought about it.
So I think I'm gonna take this lesson to reestablish my connection with nature a bit....take things very slowly...have some peace of mind at least........
and oh, the rest of this little guy will be revealed tomorrow :)

Mikayla's photography lessons began this evening. We began with the exposure triangle and aperture is our first lesson.
This woman called me over, I went and she told me to have a go ploughing... it wasn't easy, you are bent over, the donkey knew he had a beginner behind, so he didn't keep a straight line, I really messed up her lines, but her husband watched on, took lots of photos of us with my camera and a very rare experience the women let me photograph her too!

Evelyn and Clara are in the same swim lesson class. They just can't get enough. Today Evelyn showed me how she swims with circling arms and nose down. And we bought some goggles to deal with the red eyes. Super fun!
I made some very strange decisions when taking this shot. I used my 50mm lens with an ND filter so that I could have the aperture wide open for a nice shallow depth of field. Of course, this was largely pointless because Natasha was standing quite close to the background and I was standing quite far away and also meant that the focus was a little softer than I would have liked.
Had I thought it through a little more clearly to start with, I would have asked Natasha to step away from the wall. As it stands I could have dispensed with the filter and stopped down instead!
ISO 100 would have been more appropriate than 800 and less grainy too. A slower shutter speed might also have yielded a better impression of motion but I'm less bothered about that particular point!
So a lesson was perhaps learned. I think because the shot was set up for me I neglected to really consider how *I* wanted it to look and just dove in, all guns (burst modes?) blazing. I was also probably slightly nervous shooting pictures of someone I had only just met, something I don't think I've ever done before. As luck would have it, the light on the wall made a very pretty backdrop which made up for my failings.
film. around 06.
when i was younger and because i don't have my own piano, I used to go to the university music hall all the time and would try to teach myself to play.
ARLINGTON, Va. – Arlington National Cemetery workers screw niche covers on after the remains of six unclaimed veterans were placed in the new Columbarium Court No. 9 on May 9, 2013. The cemetery dedicated its ninth columbarium court by conducting a joint full honors committal service the veterans. The Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which oversaw the construction of the columbarium, used lessons learned from previous columbarium construction, which included the ability to remove one niche cover at a time when inurning remains. Spent the day at the Maryknoll Seminary in Ossining, NY. Had an appt in a.m., we had 60 degree weather so I took my sketch kit and pastel en plein air set up with me. What a gift to be outside in February AND away from the noise and dirt of the renovation. Can't really consider this one a public event as this property is as serene as can be with no visitors because it's winter. Had the place to myself. Was a special treat of a day and I'm so glad I now have sketches to remember it by.
