The photograph being looked at here is actually very important. Unfortunately the name of the photographer is unknown. It was taken in 1912 and shows a women's life drawing class at the Launceston Technical College where Lucien Dechaineux (1869-1957) had been in charge of the art department. Dechaineux taught composition classes to the Tasmanian photographer Jack Cato. Have a look at this brilliant Cato portrait: searchthecollection.nga.gov.au/object/155474

But we know Cato didn't take this photograph because he was already working in London at the time.

However, the real significance of this photo is, (1) that the artists' model here is actually Lucien Dechaineux, and (2) that it shows Hope Evershed, the first female art teacher at the Launceston Technical College, guiding a group of female students in a lesson.

The perfect picture in corona times!

These young adult bears had found a porcupine and the one on the right payed the price. Sometimes life's lessons are learned the hard way. On a positive note I have some face shots of the one on the right and it's eyes were unharmed.

A bison mom seems to be giving her son a gentle early headbutt lesson. There will be nothing gentle about headbutts when he becomes a mature bull. We enjoyed this tender moment in Custer State Park, South Dakota.

Little River, Great Smoky Mountains, Tennessee. Out of a lifting mist the water comes down, flanked and studded with perfect greens. It is pulled on a gradual gradient, and leaves a trail with each step, dragging a memory backward. The life of it's flow should be beautiful, but I find it a little cold, a little remote. Looking at the boulders, strewn and fallen in the flow, I think of my journey downriver. They are like pieces of me, broken off with each disappointment, each betrayal along the way. They stand like lessons learned, remnants of selflessness meets selfishness...bad decisions and weakness. They stand as a lesson to make myself harder, even if I don't want to be, because what is true in nature is not always true in me. But being true litters the streambed, back as far as I can see. If each had a name, they would stand as virtues lost, lessons learned. The perfect greens belie a bittersweet place; I'll leave it's beauty for another time.

Had to post an alternative version of my "Daddy Lessons" picture as I really liked the colours (and felt like it deserved a close-up shot).

When the world was brighter, before we learned to dim it down

Call it survival, call it the freedom of will

Where breath is our own, our compass needle standing still"

I got a headache after this.

Happy Fence Friday!

A Golden-crowned Sparrow ( Zonotrichia atricapilla) was picking seed off a frozen birdbath. Looked like it was learning to skate!

PS Our main birdbath has a heater. Providing bird with water in the winter is very important.

All the lessons of history in four sentences: Whom the gods would destroy, they first make mad with power. The mills of God grind slowly, but they grind exceedingly small. The bee fertilizes the flower it robs. When it is dark enough, you can see the stars.

My grandson, Wyatt loves music and is interested in learning to play for real someday. He’s about 21/2-3 yrs. old. He’s picked up the guitar to play, my Native American Flutes and lately the keyboard. The best I can do is encourage him to play whatever he wants. He’ll at times wear my headphones and hum along to whatever is playing at time. He’s a delight. Gratitude and Kindness play a role in our relationship.

Apologies for my absence... time is not my friend at the moment and even when I was away on my photo trip time just seemed to pass so quickly!

I really struggle just to keep up with social media... I don't know how people with multiple streams do it! Im ditching twitter and going to keep it to Vero and Flickr going forward.

I had a nice what I'd call recon hike up Beinn a Chrulaiste last week... It was my first time up that hill and first hike since my knee injury so I took it slowly... I defo need to improve my fitness if I want to nip up there for sunrise shots. The hike to the viewpoint took me about 2hrs and it should really be done in an hour... but I was slow and did stop to take a few pictures on the day.

The sun was fleeting and when it did come out it was strong. As you all know I rarely blend shots... but I think this shot is finally the one that has convinced me I need to learn! As you can see I've completely blown the highlights and didn't take brackets such that I could even use the shots to learn... This was the only light I got on the face of the Buachaille... and when it appeared I got so excited I made the school boy error of not checking my histogram... Ouch a sore one as to be honest I like this composition but im annoyed I blew the highlights and once they are that gone there is no recovery!

Had a great trip but a mixed bag of weather... and some exciting moments and some mistakes to learn from. God I could go away again tomorrow! But back to work instead!

1) have tripod set up already; 2) double-check the aperture (of course it was on 22 instead of 2.8) because things look brighter in-camera; 3) just enjoy watching the lights dance.

Even the prettiest flower will die one day. It’s nature’s way of teaching us that nothing lasts forever.

Another creature of the forest edge - the Motmot was a fantastic bird to spot and photograph!

Jagodne Poland

Many moons ago students gathered in this one room schoolhouse. Most probably walked a mile or two down the old gravel road. Some got dropped off by horse and buggy. Maybe the more affluent would get to ride in their parent's motorcar. And between these four walls they would all learn about the three R's - reading, 'riting, and 'rithmetic.

But some lessons aren't exactly taught. Kids learn to socialize with one another. The teacher learns patience from the students. And the schoolhouse? It may not learn, but it gets to stand tall and watch how time goes on. The students grow up and become teachers, politicians and farmers. The teacher goes back to teach at the school they once attended. The politician decides this school is too small and pools tax money to fund a new two story school in the city. And the farmer? He buys the land surrounding the old school and holds onto the memory from his youth.

(Hello flickr friends - I'm back from a short hiatus! Life has been busy on my end but I have a lot of new snaps to share! I had the opportunity this week to travel and visit some places on my bucket list from around central Indiana.

I'll share a little more about this school later but it was built in 1910 and sits abandoned down a country road and surrounded by farms on all sides.)

When a 9 year old expressed interest in learning photography, I obliged with a quick evening lesson. With this as our subject, it was a brilliant mini session that I don't think he will soon forget.
