One of the two beautiful Snow Leopards at the Calgary Zoo, taken on September 30th.
"Snow leopards live between 3,000 and 5,500 metres (9,800 and 18,000 ft) above sea level in the rocky mountain ranges of Central and South Asia. Their secretive nature means that their exact numbers are unknown, but it has been estimated that between 3,500 and 7,000 snow leopards exist in the wild and between 600 and 700 in zoos worldwide."

It's quarter to 1:00 in the morning and I have to be up at 5:20 a.m. (better than the 4:10 a.m. this morning!) to do the Calgary Christmas Bird Count, so I thought I'd post my photos very early, before I fall into bed. The small group I'm part of tomorrow (4 of us?) will be searching part of the NE of the city to see what birds we can find and how many of each. Today, I took part in the Canmore (near Banff in the Rocky Mountains) Christmas Bird Count. Four of us walked all the streets and alleys in the Harvey Heights area. A beautiful winter's day - yet very few of my photos turned out, ha!
Have any of you seen these cute little Pixar videos (I got the links from YouTube)? I posted the links last December and happened to just come across them again a few minutes ago..

This may stand as the best ISO 1600 shot I've ever taken. The leopard was so close and content that I just didn't want to use a flash to disturb him. It was so dark that it proved to be tricky. I was pleasantly surprised when I checked my LCD.
Try it On Black Thanks to fd!

The Leopard
The leopard (Panthera pardus) is a member of the Felidae family with a wide range in some parts of Africa and tropical Asia, from Siberia, South and West Asia to across most of sub-Saharan Africa. It is listed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List because it is declining in large parts of its range due to habitat loss and fragmentation, and hunting for trade and pest control. It is regionally extinct in Hong Kong, Singapore, Kuwait, Syrian Arab Republic, Libya and Tunisia.

Botswana Big Cats (15 Images). Continuing the series of images taken recently in Botswana. This group covers a number of groups of lions, some leopard and a pair of cheetah. Many of the lions had been active hunting with kills of buffelo, zebra and even a young elephant. In many cases the animals were resting after a big feed. The leopard had also been hunting and placed a kill in a tree.

She is pissed off. Looking for 2 of her cubs in a burnt down field.
The cubs moved from the place she left them, I think.
She got them later.

This is my first attempt drawing a big cat with colored pencils. Colored pencils are not very forgiving so drawing fur/hair is more challenging and less flexible than graphite. I somehow managed to draw around the whiskers with a little help of an electric eraser. Again, the electric eraser could only remove a limited amount of color.
As for the composition, the eyes should be the focal point, so I cut out all the distraction and left with this close-up. "Bam! In your face!" that kind of feel. :P
The fur texture was created by colored pencil strokes alone. The OMS solvent was applied lightly to intensify the color satuation. Heavy application with solvent is likely to killl the texture.
Let me know what you think. Fave/Comment/Like. Thanks!
