The Amur leopard is considered to be one of the most critically endangered big cats in the world, with roughly 30-40 individuals remaining in the wild. Habitat loss and hunting (for trophies and use in traditional medicines) are the biggest threats to Amur leopards in the wild.

The Amur leopard has been a protected species in Russia since 1956, but poaching is still a problem. Conservation efforts in the wild for these animals include anti-poaching patrols, customs control, fighting forest fires, environmental education programmes and working closely with local communities.

Winter is barely a month old and I have cabin fever bad. I had the day off from work and my son and I went to the Philadelphia Zoo. Most of the animals were indoors and not on exhibit, but there were enough out that I got some great shots. This one was in an outdoor exhibit but behind glass. I zoomed in and got this shot without any reflection from the glass.

Mafufanyane is one of the more mature Males of the Sabi Sands Area , seen here checking that no other males have been in his territory .

This was a leopard subspecies that I haven't seen in the UK (I was so excited as i'm a big cat person). This is a Persian leopard and it happens to look quite similar to a snow leopard although they are completely different species. Also at Amersfoort zoo
