To learn about erosion, deposition, estuaries, and the formation of rivers and oxbow lakes, we set up an "experiment" at the pond. I dug a winding riverbed and my son and daughter built sandcastles on the periphery. Then the children made quick hypotheses about the effect of water on the sand and predictions about which sandcastles would remain standing as their simulated river ran to the pond. Next, they poured buckets of water down the riverbed. It was very easy to observe how a curving river redistributes sediment and erodes banks over time, finally orphaning the oxbow from the original river (and creating a lot of property damage in the process). The children's final explanation of what happened -- a fledgling "theory" of river formation -- was much different from their original hypotheses and quite close to what I remember from my undergraduate geology class (thanks, Professor Coombs).
