The National STEM Guitar Project, in partnership with NSF Advanced Technological Education (ATE) Centers with funding provided through a grant from The National Science Foundation (#1304405), hosts innovative Guitar Building Institutes around the United States. The 5-day institutes, combined with additional instructional activities comprising 80 hours, provide faculty training on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) for middle, high school, and post-secondary faculty. The institutes present and teach participants hands-on, applied learning techniques to help engage students and spark excitement for learning STEM subject matter.

Nationwide, there are increasing concerns from businesses about the supply of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics trained workers. Science and math test scores in the U.S. are among the lowest around the world.

The goal and objective of the STEM Guitar Building Institutes is to showcase a new way to present learning for students with applied methods.

1st-4th grade students with the Academy of Early Learning visited UI Health Care to learn about ways to help others in the community through healthcare. Students visited Air Care where they took a peek inside the helicopter, met the flight crew and learned about it's purpose. Students then visited the Medical Museums where they completed a scavenger hunt and learned about nutrition and how to stay healthy. Finally, students visited the Carver College of Medicine where they engaged in hands-on STEM activities including learning about bone health and making finger casts, and learning basic physical exam skills such as listening to heart beats, lungs and testing reflexes.

University of Iowa Health Care is committed partners with formal and informal educators and community organizations across the state to advance STEM literacy to inspire the next generation of health care professionals and build a foundation for children to understanding their own health. In FY2015, more than 16,000 school age children were engaged in hands on learning provided by 260 faculty, staff and students.

Medics assigned to the Virginia National Guard's Fredericksburg-based Headquarters Company, 116th Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 116th Infantry Brigade Combat Team conduct an initial Combat Lifesaver class for Soldiers within the battalion April 10, 2015, at the Mason-Ruhren Readiness Center in Fredericksburg, Va. Starting with classroom training, the Soldiers learned valuable life saving skills including opening and managing a casualty's airway, controlling bleeding and treating penetrating chest traumas. Under the supervision and guidance of the medics, those taking the course were also provided opportunities for "real-world" experience, such as practicing proper tourniquet application on themselves and other students. The Soldiers are scheduled to participate in additional classroom instruction over the drill weekend and will need to pass both a hands-on validation and a written exam to be credited as a Combat Lifesaver. Downtown Branch kicked off the Make.Play.Read.Learn program with tons of fun activities for all ages. We played video games, made Dr. Who-inspired masks and paper robots, tried science experiments, and visited with animals from the Chattanooga Zoo. We even read stories to Jag the Reading Dog. Ready to Learn? Ready to Teach?

1:20 pm - 2:20 pm MDT on Monday, July 1, 2013

What will the Common Core mean to our nation’s struggling schools? It sets a high and necessary bar, but the challenge before us is to ensure that every teacher and child is fortified with the skills to hurdle it. How do we build a foundation so that all kids are ready to learn?
