We could learn a lot from crayons;
Some are sharp, some are pretty;
Some are dull, some have weird names;
All are different colors but they all exist very nicely in the same box.

"Beginner's Mind is approaching things with that wonderful, fresh, open spirit of a child... Children look at something and they just want to learn it. They soak in the information. They don't worry about looking bad... It's an incredibly easy thing to have a beginner's mind when we're a beginner. But then we start to be told we're good and we start to feel proficient. Then we start to have our ego attached. And that's when things get dangerous." - The Art Of Learning by Joshua Waitzkin
Read this today and it touched a chord in me, because I do feel like a child seeing the world for the first time lately. As I rediscover my passion in photography and acquire new skills in using a DSLR, I'm filled with excitement and apprehension. Excitement because I'm learning every day, apprehension because I worry that I will not be good enough.
This was taken in New York in 2004. I can't wait to see how I've changed - for better or for worse - when I test my skills again in Japan soon.

"I came home in the morning
And everything was gone
Oh what have I done
I dropped dead in the hallway
Cursing the dawn
Oh come on sun
Why must I burn
I’m just trying to learn
I stared into the light
To kill some of my pain
It was all in vain
Cause no senses remain
But an ache in my body
And regret on my mind
But I’ll be fine
Cause I Live and Learn
Yes I live and I learn
If you live you will learn
I live and I learn"

Students learn about CIMMYT's maize breeding work with a talk from José Luis Torres, senior researcher with the Global Maize Program, during a visit to the center's maize demonstration plot as part of a university open house for Mexican students. On 27 September 2007, 200 students from eight universities visited CIMMYT's headquarters at El Batán, Mexico, where they toured the biotechnology laboratories, germplasm bank, and maize and wheat fields, while learning about the center’s mission and work. The aim of the event was to raise student interest in agricultural research, and perhaps encourage future collaboration with CIMMYT. This was the first time such an open house was held, and it has now become an annual event, known as "CIMMYT a Puerta Abierta".

One of my favorite things about this time of year is the roasting of pumpkin seeds. As a kid, the idea of roasted seeds was magical, something that only the good people at David seed company knew how to do. Even into my twenties, the seeds still held an untouchable place in my heart. It wasn't until I sat down and tried to figure out how to do it myself (I mean, what else are you going to do with all those seeds after carving a pumpkin?), that I understood how dead simple the process is. I think this is my third year roasting them, and this batch was amazing. I broke through the mystery and found that anyone can make these little nuggets of nutty greatness.
I use this example of seeds to show how photography is the exact same thing. To non-photographers or those with point-and-shoots, the thought of the giant black SLR bodies (both film and digital) might scare them. Despite all the buttons and dials and blinking lights, the idea of photography is as simple as roasting pumpkin seeds. SLR cameras boil down to three simple things. Shutter speed, aperture, ISO. Sure there are a ton of methods and theories out there, but if you understand the principle of those three elements, you are most of the way there to taking full control of any camera in the world.
A photo is just someone knowing how to expose the scene and then pushing a button. Sure there are complexities in style and composition, but all of that comes with practice. Don't let mystery steer you away from knowledge that is ready for the roasting.

....continued from last photo
The hardest part was finding a clear coating that would not ruin the alcohol based dye markers. A clear coating is absolutely necessary to keep markers from smudging and being wiped off. I actually spent days researching this...contacting several company technical departments, and doing research online. Once I decided to chance a coating , it took 3 trips to different stores before finding the clear spray.
I used the clear spray in thin layers...then colored in the drawings more, or layering more color (reds and oranges seem to fade out with clear coatings). Luckily the clear spray was able to isolate the markers from mixing and bleeding together. A few more coats on top and the reading tools are washable and permanent. *
I think this project could be done at home and perhaps even the children themselves could decorate their own read out loud tool. Its a very inexpensive project, truly helpful ...and FUN!
*Washable with soap and water...not hand sanitizing wipes or hand sanitizing liquids...as those contain alcohol and would destroy the finish.

CAMP HUMPHREYS - Matthew C. Perry High School of Iwakuni, Japan, won the 2012 Far East Boys' Division 2 Soccer Championship here, going 6-0-1 in the
eight-team, double elimination tournament.
Perry began by defeating Daegu, 3-1, then topped E.J. King, 4-0. This was followed by a 2-2 tie with Yongsan International School of Seoul. Perry then blanked Zama, 7-0, nipped Osan, 4-3, downed YISS again, 2-1, then clinched the title with another 2-1 win over YISS, this time on penalty kicks.
The tournament's top scorer was Tyrone Boylan, from Osan, with 10 goals. Gaku Lange, from Perry, was voted the tournament's Most Valuable Player. Individual award winners also included Shu Ikeda from YISS, who won the best goalkeeper award; Roland Umoru, also from YISS, who won the best offensive player award; and Japeth Devries, from International Christain School, won
best defensive player.
"Some great soccer was played during this tournament," said Shawn Knudsen, tournament director. "Coaches spent lots of time preparing for this tournament and there was not a better place than Camp Humphreys to hold a soccer tournament."
Making the all-tournament team were: Yuta Flemming, Alex Barker, Gaku Lange, Tyler Apple and Yasuki Milsop from Perry; Roland Umoru, Jeong Min Huh, Shu Ikeda, Japeth Devries and Mickey Kumar from YISS; Jacob Ives from Osan; Darius Wyche from Daegu; Ryan Walls from Zama; Kento Reynolds from EJ King; and Sean Gammel from Edgren.
"I feel like crying because I am so happy," said Mark Lange, Perry coach. "We are one of the smallest schools in the Pacific with only 60 boys, but we believed that we could win and we did. The power of positive thinking, mind and heart all came together today and we will remember today for the rest of our lives. Daegu was a heavy favorite to win this tournament and they beat us four times last year, but we came out victorious this year.
