CAMP HUMPHREYS — The United States Army Garrison Humphreys Morale Welfare and Recreation sports division hosted its annual triathlon here June 23.
Daniel Bates won the men’s event, followed by Timothy Simmons and Zak Kuiper.
“It’s my first time winning, actually. It’s pretty cool,” Bates said. Even though his goggles broke during the swim, he still said swimming was probably his favorite part of the event. “The pool was amazing,” he said.
The triathlon comprised three portions: a swim in the Splish & Splash Water Park pool, a 20-kilometer bicycle ride, and a five-kilometer run.
Rebecca Corbin won the women’s triathlon, followed by Sara Rainville and Rebekah Bell. Brian Joseph won the men’s 33 and over division. J.B. Gomez finished as runner-up, while Dave Elger claimed third place. Wendy Tokach won the women’s 33 and over title, followed by Danielle Laatsch and Melissa Shafer.
Colonel Joseph P. Moore, United States Army Garrison Humphreys commander, presented trophies and medals to the winners.
Lonnie Herring, USAG Humphreys sports director, said the event means different challenges for different people. Some want to finish in the top 10, some are looking for a personal best, and others are just looking to finish.
Jimmy Sheehan, who competed in his first triathlon, said, “I liked it. I’m going to do more in the future” He added his highlight of the day was “finishing.”
The French National Committee for UNICEF and several reporters visited us to learn about the situation in Congo and how we were using their resources to benefit children. The visit was led by the committee’s president, the highly committed Jacques Hintzy.
We visited an excellent project in Kpandroma to reintegrate children who had been caught up in the fighting between FNI and UPC. At and around the centre we met with children who were being assisted and who had successfully reintegrated. The children are provided with medical, psychosocial, educational and economic support. As we left the centre a group of girls sung of the suffering they had been through whilst the other boys and girls danced around them.
We also visited Zengo, a group of villages that had been attacked by both UPC and FNI. In Zengo we will shortly start a project to help the returning population to rebuild their health and education services.
Le Comité français pour l'UNICEF, accompagné de plusieurs journalistes, nous a rendu visite pour se renseigner sur la situation au Congo et comment nous utilisons leurs ressources pour bénéficier les enfants. La visite fut dirigé par le président du comité, le fortement motivé Jacques Hintzy.
Nous avons visité un excellent projet dans Kpandroma qui réintègre les enfants qui avaient été impliqués dans les groupes armées. Dans et autour du centre nous avons rencontré des enfants qui étaient actuellement dans le programme et d’autre qui avaient avec réintégré leur communauté avec succès. Les enfants reçoivent un support médical, psychosocial, éducatif et économique. En quittant le centre nous avons vu trois filles qui chantaient de leurs souffrances dans les groupes, tandis que d’autres garçons et filles dansaient autour d’elles.
De suite nous avons visité Zengo, un groupe de villages qui a l’époque avaient subit des attaqués par UPC et FNI. A Zengo nous lancerons sous peu un projet pour aider la population à reconstruire leurs services de santé et d'éducation.

The Learn-to-Swim programme runs from 25th May - 5th June 2014. 45 children and 17 mothers will each receive 10 days instruction. The event is run by Soneva Fushi in partnership with Baa Atoll Education Centre, the school on Eydhafushi.

OMG, I stimulate the interest for studying. I really love to research, find out all things in the world, now.... There's a big world out there. Bigger than prom, bigger than high school and where I'm living...
It's just such a freeing thing to set these great challenges for myself to travel, to learn more about the world, to just go out there and get crazy and get free and get strong.

Umbrella with 580EX to my right and reflector to my left to lift the shadows (although I gave them a bit more depth in the end). Easypeasy, but I didn't attempt to use the background because my dad wanted this sort of halo effect which I don't know how to bring out without the extra strobe - and my walls aren't blue :) Ironing shirts is pretty easy, just put an empty layer on top to luminous blending mode and pick the right white for the shirt and start painting over on low opacity...
