Oxalis acetosella (Oxalidaceae) 091 21
Oxalis acetosella (wood sorrel or common wood sorrel) is a rhizomatous flowering plant in the family Oxalidaceae, common in most of Europe and parts of Asia. The specific name is acetosella, which refers to its sour taste.
The plant has trifoliate compound leaves, the leaflets heart-shaped and folded through the middle, that occur in groups of three on petioles up to 10 centimeters long. It flowers from spring to midsummer with small white chasmogamous flowers with pink streaks. Red or violet flowers also occur rarely. During the night or when it rains the flowers close and the leaves fold.

Toona sinensis, commonly called Chinese mahogany, Chinese cedar, Chinese toon, beef and onion plant, or red toon (Malay: suren; Vietnamese: hương xuân) is a species of Toona native to eastern and southeastern Asia, from North Korea south through most of eastern, central and southwestern China to Nepal, northeastern India, Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, and western Indonesia. Leaf (unusual specimen with terminal leaflet)
It is a deciduous tree growing to 25 metres (82 ft) tall with a trunk up to 70 cm diameter. The bark is brown, smooth on young trees, becoming scaly to shaggy on old trees. The leaves are pinnate, 50–70 cm long and 30–40 cm broad, with 10–40 leaflets, the terminal leaflet usually absent (paripinnate) but sometimes present (imparipennate); the individual leaflets 9–15 cm long and 2.5–4 cm broad, with an entire or weakly serrated margin. The flowers are produced in summer in panicles 30–50 cm long at the end of a branch; each flower is small, 4–5 mm diameter, with five white or pale pink petals. The fruit is a capsule 2–3.5 cm long, containing several winged seeds. 43554
Everyone to the bus shelters
Rouen (France) - Saturday March 11, 2023, during the demonstration against the pension reform, young PCF activists were very active. To get noticed by the media covering the event, they systematically climbed onto the roofs of bus shelters waving their flags. When the head of the procession, where most of the journalists are, had passed, they ran towards another bus shelter. These young activists seem to have taken courses in communication. In my day, they just handed out leaflets. In any case, it was effective, they did not go unnoticed.
Thalictrum delavayi Hewitt's Double
Chinese Meadow Rue Hewitt’s Double
A fairly new introduction, but already a classic, Thalictrum delavayi Hewitt's Double is herbaceous perennial with a rather lax, upright habit. The mid-green leaves are lacy and divided into three rounded leaflets, delicate and very attractive, reminiscent of maidenhair fern. Flower buds like little mauve raindrops on branched, airy stems open to little, mauve, double, rosette-like flowers with a yellow eye. Looks lovely spaced along a border of blue, purple and pink flowers. It can flop a little, but usually other plants will hold it up.
The leaves are commonly glaucous blue-green in colour. The flowers are small and are apetalous; in other words they have no petals. They have have numerous long stamens, often brightly white, yellow, pink or pale purple, and are produced in conspicuous dense inflorescences. In some species the sepals are large, brightly coloured and petal-like, but in most they are small and fall when the flower opens or soon after.

Officially called Silktree but more commonly known as Mimosa, this naturalized small ornamental tree from China is common in edge habitats, such as along roadsides, beside parking lots, and bordering powerlines. The twice-compound leaves with many fine leaflets and pink powderpuff flowers are very distinctive.
...Let it be! They don't have to be shiny. They don't have to be red. But these new leaflets are both. Regular walkers here know there is plenty of poison ivy (Toxicodendron radicans) growing alongside this path overlooking the sea. You couldn't be blamed for starting to itch just looking at it.

Eating something is wonderful. The preparation is often difficult if you have not learned it and constantly makes. Painting pictures of food is much easier - for me.
When I eat, I often reconsider our everyday eating objects and rejoice that they exist. Then she wants to translate into pictures as a reminder. Here is a selection of current kitchen still life. I'm always curious how they look like drawn or painted.

Newly unwrapped palm frond is uncurling its myriad of leaflets. It's part of a small, low palm that recently got a brand new set of fronds which rose from the center of the stem like a knot of finger-thick snakes. They are now unfurling, looking very frond-like, but do not yet have their needle sharp spines.

And sharp as a knife...
Macro Monday: #Danger
Width of the frame: 3 cm / 1,18 inches
Oh, how much I hate to accidentally cut myself on paper. And how much more often has that happenend compared to a knive accident in the kitchen. We are surrounded by potentially dangerous things, aren't we? And one of those things is the inconspicious paper, evil in the guise of the daily newspaper, a book, a white, empty sheet of paper, the information leaflet... Admittedly, I've slightely exaggerated the consequences here, because a "paper cut" is never that bloody, but it bloody well hurts anyway ;-)
Simple ingredients used: strip of paper (of course), placed on my semi-glossy white tile and fixated with a small piece of modelling clay (which I forgot to remove with the healing [healing!] brush, *sigh*), because the droplet of "blood" always made it fall over. The "blood" consists of water and glycerol, tinted with red watercolour. Glycerol increases the water's surface tension and helps to stabilise the droplets (thank you very much for the advice, Bine&Minka2007!). A 50-50 mixture is recommended, but you should experiment with the mixing ratio, I used a 40 (water) to 60 (glycerol) mixing ratio for this. You can also use glycerol only. Since it is a fairly greasy substance, I'd recommend to have a bottle of make-up remover at hand which works really well to clean the surfaces you've used the glycerol on.
Other uses for glycerol? On the bottle I got from my local chemist it says that fir branches and Christmas trees last longer when you add a little glycerol to the water (4 tablespoons of glycerol in 1 l of water), and it is also recommended as a frost protection agent for rubber seals of, for instance, fridge or car doors. Speaking of frost protection agent... I vaguely remember the 1985 diethylene glycol wine scandal, where Austrian wineries adulterated their wines with diethylene glycerol... but that's an altogether different matter... ;-)
A Happy Macro Monday, Everyone!
One more of the series of shots from the Museum. This one was a bit tricky though. I had light coming directly on the leaf from the other end, as in direct sunlight. I had to move away to face the tree truck but then now i ended up with lesser light. Cheap Canon lenses are not all that sharp unless you go smaller than f/7.1.
Finally i switched to manual, went to F/11 and fired the flash from the Canon Speedlite 430EX to evenly light up these leaves. Interestingly i'm getting to see how light has DoF here. The background from the leaves seems to have been darkened out in the bokeh.
Looks good on large

This is a tree Native to Borneo, red powder puff is an evergreen shrub or small tree. It was formerly included in the legume or pea family, but has recently been shifted into the mimosa family. It typically grows 10-15’ tall in its native habitat and is a very popular flowering shrub in central and southern Florida where it will survive year-round in the ground. Bipinnately compound leaves (5-10 pairs of leaflets per pinna) open copper-pink but mature to dark green. Raspberry-like flower buds open to hemispherical red powder puff flower heads (to 3” across) consisting of masses of scarlet stamens. Blooms primarily in fall and winter, but sporadic additional bloom may occur throughout the rest of the year. Variations in flower color exist, with some pink and white forms being available. Calliandra comes from the Greek words kallos meaning beauty and andros meaning stamen.

Wild carrot, Faux-chervis, which is easily found in all disturbed areas, at the turn of a road and at the seaside is the ancestor of the carrot grown. It develops a strong taproot, fibrous, white to yellow, much less thick than our cultivated carrots. Its leaves are alternate, long petiolate, trilobate, with elliptic to linear cut leaflets. They give off a spicy scent. The root, become fleshy by the culture, constitutes one of "our best vegetables": it is aperitive, diuretic and softening.

In case anyone is interested, Mill Meece are hosting an open evening on Friday 16th May between 18:00 and 22:00 when the station will be lit by oil lamps to create an ambient atmosphere.
I have contacted the organisers to ask whether a) photographers are welcome and b) can we use tripods in the low lighting. They are more than happy with both. If you plan to go then I look forward to seeing you there.
BTW I am not associated with MMPS in any way other than living nearby and visiting whenever I can.

Most of the window glass in St Andrew’s Church, Aldborough, dates to the Victorian era and the early 20th century. Historical highlights around the church include a beautifully carved 16th-century table, now used for displaying leaflets, and a pair of grave slabs to members of the Aldeburgh family, dated 1430 and 1475.
