As of April 22, 2010 any home built prior to 1978 has to be checked for lead by a licensed renovator. It federal by the EPA so anyone doing work has to be certified. The fine start at $32,500 for not complying. So handymen, contractors, homeowners, and anyone who works on 1 and 2 family dwellings.... get your certification

The first written record of lead mining at Minera dates back to 1296, when Edward I of England hired miners from the site to work in his new mines in Devon. Not all of them vacated the area, however, as mining went on until the Black Death in 1349, when it ended.

In 1527, two men bought the rights to mine on the site, but deeper workings were unworkable due to the presence of underground rivers, and the inability to prevent flooding. The inability to pay for steam engines to pump out water closed the mines again until 1845, when John Taylor & Sons, mining agents from Flintshire, formed the Minera Mining Company. They were able to build a stationary steam engine on site, and also blast caves from down in the valley into the mines, for extra drainage. The steam engine was a Cornish engine (i.e. a Beam engine), typical for stationary engines at the time.

John Taylor & Sons had used a £30,000 investment at the time, yet the profits for 1864 alone were £60,000 (equivalent to over £4 Million in 2008. By 1900, the price of lead and zinc had fallen dramatically, while the price of coal used for the steam engine rose. The stationary steam engine stopped work in 1909. The owners sold off the mines and all assets by 1914.

Transport

For transport, the Mines had their own railway branch line, which connected with the end of the Wrexham and Minera Branch at Minera Limeworks. The mines also had their own steam locomotive, a Manning Wardle 0-6-0ST (Works No. 21) Henrietta.[2] The lead ore would be taken to Wrexham for transport nationally, and Coal brought back. The line was dismantled when the mines closed, as the line was privately owned, however were rebuilt to serve nearby clay pits. Plans to build a tourist narrow gauge railway on the line were made in the 1990s, but have not progressed.

Restoration

The workings and local area underwent massive restoration and regeneration funded by Wrexham County Borough Council and the Welsh Development Agency beginning in 1988 to make sure the lead, Zinc and lime spoil tips didn't contaminate local water supplies, the Engine house was rebuilt and fitted with replica machinery, as the original steam engine was removed in 1914. A visitor Centre was opened for public use, and the engine house is part of a tour. It is a site of tourism for Wrexham County Borough Council.

In 2004, the site was attacked by vandals, but this was repaired by the council in 2005.

At 2300 hrs. on 7/11/2101 LAPD pulled over a vehicle and discovered two 30 pound bundles of Marijuana. Suspects lead LAPD to a Rail Car that had 76 bundles of Marijuana located at the bottom of the Cylindrical Rail Car. To gain better access to the Rail Car, LAPD decided to move the Rail Car to a location that could accommodate all incoming resources. The Rail Car was moved from LA City Jurisdiction into the City of Commerce. At approx. 3 AM on 7/12/2010, LAPD requested LAFD Haz Mat Unit and USAR Unit to make entry into the Rail Car, confine space, to remove all remaining bundles. LA County Health Haz Mat was also requested because the Rail Car, although empty, had a residual amount of unknown product. The product was ruled by Health Hazmat 111 as non-hazardous and non-flammable. During the removal process, LAFD USAR discovered two 6" X 18" cylindrical PVC containers. As a precaution all personnel were removed until LAPD Bomb Squad could positively r/o an incidinary device. It was decided by LAPD Bomb Squad to detonate these two unknown PVC containers and preceed forward with the retrieval of the remaining bundles. All LA County First Alarm Units were strategical assigned to the perimeter of the incident in the event of a larger detonation. The detonation of the two containers occurred and all LA County Resources weer released at scene except for USAR 103, RT103, HT103, BC3 and AC9. LA City requested LACoFD USAR team to serve as a back up entry team for a Confined Space entry. All remaining bundles of Marijuana was removed and confiscated by LAPD. All LA County Units were released at 2048 hrs.

I think of this horse as the lead horse, though I don't know which is the "official" lead horse.

The back panel of my old Hiwatt Lead 100R amplifier. Not a "good" Hiwatt. This is one of the Fane/Turntone PCB models made between 1986 and 1989. I used it as a bass amp for biamping. The Rhythm channel I'd set clean. Then I could kick in the Lead channel to add some grit to the high end with a little volume boost when I wanted. I really liked the control layout and the way the controls worked. The construction was shoddy, but I never had any problems with mine.

A 1 year-old boy is tested for lead in his blood and his mother learns more about the risks of lead during the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (Public Health) celebration of California’s Lead Poisoning Prevention Week, October 23-29 with free lead testing in East Los Angeles.

Children can be exposed to lead by ingesting lead-contaminated dust, paint chips from deteriorating lead-based paint, and lead-contaminated soil. If homes have water lines with lead in them, the lead can get into drinking water, especially while these lines are being replaced.

Other sources of lead poisoning include lead dust brought home on parents' work clothes, certain imported ceramic pottery, painted objects, traditional home remedies, traditional cosmetics, and imported spices, candies, and other food products. Additionally, activities that involve lead products such as soldering, making stained glass, and handling bullets or fishing line sinkers can put children at risk.

Public Health provides outreach and education to promote screening as well as nursing case management and environmental investigation for lead-burdened families. Public Health also partners with the Los Angeles County Development Authority to provide lead paint hazard remediation services to eligible homeowners, property owners, and tenants across LA County.

This room came from a house in Buffalo, New York, that was one of the few suburban residential house commissions executed by McKim, Mead & White in their early shingle style (1879-86). It was commissioned in 1882 by Mrs. Erzelia F. Metcalfe. A stair hall, or “living hall,” with an inviting inglenook featuring a fireplace and built-in benches, was considered essential to a house built in the 1870s and 1880s. Inspired by the “halls” in early colonial houses, where people ate, slept, and performed myriad tasks, nineteenth-century living halls, in contrast, were meant only for relaxation and leisure.
