When you go ice climbing there has to be one poor slob who goes up the ice first, climbing with their crampons and ice axes, and screwing ice screws into the ice. The rope is "attached" to the ice screw by means of a carabiner. If the climber falls (which we don't like to talk about) the rope, anchored by the person at the bottom of the climb, is arrested by means of the carabiners, ice screws and guy on the ground.
