Grade-II*-listed shot tower in the Boughton district of Chester. The tower is the oldest of three remaining shot towers in the UK and probably the oldest such structure still standing in the world.
Red-brick tower is 168 feet (41.2 m) tall, Built by Walkers, Parker & Co. in 1799. The lift was added in 1971. This was one of only three such towers built to manufacture musket shot for the Napoleonic Wars, the Chester tower was still in use as late as 2001.
In 1783, William Watts of Bristol,Bristol took out a patent for his new technique, a process "for making smallshot perfectly globular in form and without dimples, notches and imperfections which other shot hereto manufactured usually have on their surface".
Watt's technique, was to allow molten lead- to which the deadly poison arsenic was added- to be poured from the top of the tower, passing through a griddle to separate it into tiny pellets before landing in a wooden vat of water below.

The roar of the venerable RAAF F-111 was heard in the Goulburn valley for one of the last times this week (12-13 May 10).
Two of the Amberley- based aircraft supported the Army’s firepower and manoeuvre demonstration at Puckapunyal Military Area, called EXERCISE CHONG JU.
EX CHONG JU is named after a series of offensive actions by the 3rd Battalion, the Royal Australian Regiment (3RAR) on 29 October 1950 against North Koreans, during which infantry company advances were supported by US Army tanks and artillery.
Artillery from 53 Independent Battery fired 105mm rounds in support of the biannual exercise. The battery usually supports courses run by the School of Artillery.
53 Independent Battery was the only Australian battery to bring its guns to bear against the Japanese during the Battle of Kokoda in 1942.
Besides the effect of artillery and aircraft, EX CHONG JU demonstrated M1A1 Abrams tanks, M113AS4 armoured personnel carriers (APCs), ASLAV and the Javelin Medium Defensive Fire Support Weapon. All of these weapon systems are available to an Australian combat team when it employs synchronised arms effects.
From a dense treeline, tanks and armoured personnel carriers (APCs) advanced to their target, called Objective Spike.
The M113AS4 is an updated APC, and features improved armour and cross country capability that allows it to keep up with the M1A1 Tank.
The assaulting force made short work of is objective, and clearly demonstrated the potency of the modern Australian combat team.
EX CHONG JU is a training activity for the Combat Officer Advanced Course, which trains combat arms officers on combined arms tactics.

"The lead cow takes everyone to the best hay or grazing. The lead cow is always watching to see if you are coming with feed. The lead cow keeps everyone informed of your whereabouts. Lead cows like to make you think the whole herd is hungry. The lead cow only loses credibility if she tells the herd you are coming with feed and it turns out you are not." - Cowboy Jerry
I used to have to take one of these to swap for a fully charged one that powered our Wireless in the 1950s. They were quite heavy and the acid splashed and made small holes in my grey school socks. My wife thought I was making it up when I'd told her about them. Now she believes me after a staff member at Beamish Museum confirmed the process.
I also remember using these in experiments at school.
A shot taken while returning from dinner with our son. The reflections were just so cool. I just wished I had a filder with me to smooth the water and improve the reflections. Maybe another day.

The most unsuspected streets lead us to magic places, places where we want to live, where we find our most inner desires, where our dreams come true and where we never stop dreaming. Places where I see you, you see me and where we discover. Places where I feel I'm alive.

Eric Fisher was a prominent Winster man during my 1950s childhood. He was also active in village life. In the late 1940s he lived with his family at Mount View, West Bank, quite near where my family lived on The Flat. Later on both our families were neighbours on Leacroft Road.

Founded on July 10, 1876 after the discovery of gold, Lead has always been less known than its infamous neighbor Deadwood, but is both larger in population and more of a city than the tourist town to the Northeast. Lead is dominated by the Homestake Mine, the largest and deepest gold mine in North America until it closed in 2002. The Homestake Mine was led by mining baron George Hearst, and Lead consequently became something of a company town, with George's wife Pheobe Hearst opening the Hearst Free Public Library and the Hearst Free Kindergarten, then later with Homestake Mine superintendent Thomas Grier, the Homestake Opera House and Recreation Center. As the Homestake Mine continually expanded swallowing up neighboring mines and the city itself, the entire city moved atop the hills in the 1930s. The Homestake Mine is now the site of the Sanford Underground Research Facility to study neutrinos and dark matter.
Lead, South Dakota
The first written record of lead mining at Minera dates back to 1296, when Edward I of England hired miners from the site to work in his new mines in Devon. Not all of them vacated the area, however, as mining went on until the Black Death in 1349, when it ended.
In 1527, two men bought the rights to mine on the site, but deeper workings were unworkable due to the presence of underground rivers, and the inability to prevent flooding. The inability to pay for steam engines to pump out water closed the mines again until 1845, when John Taylor & Sons, mining agents from Flintshire, formed the Minera Mining Company. They were able to build a stationary steam engine on site, and also blast caves from down in the valley into the mines, for extra drainage. The steam engine was a Cornish engine (i.e. a Beam engine), typical for stationary engines at the time.
John Taylor & Sons had used a £30,000 investment at the time, yet the profits for 1864 alone were £60,000 (equivalent to over £4 Million in 2008. By 1900, the price of lead and zinc had fallen dramatically, while the price of coal used for the steam engine rose. The stationary steam engine stopped work in 1909. The owners sold off the mines and all assets by 1914.
Transport
For transport, the Mines had their own railway branch line, which connected with the end of the Wrexham and Minera Branch at Minera Limeworks. The mines also had their own steam locomotive, a Manning Wardle 0-6-0ST (Works No. 21) Henrietta.[2] The lead ore would be taken to Wrexham for transport nationally, and Coal brought back. The line was dismantled when the mines closed, as the line was privately owned, however were rebuilt to serve nearby clay pits. Plans to build a tourist narrow gauge railway on the line were made in the 1990s, but have not progressed.
Restoration
The workings and local area underwent massive restoration and regeneration funded by Wrexham County Borough Council and the Welsh Development Agency beginning in 1988 to make sure the lead, Zinc and lime spoil tips didn't contaminate local water supplies, the Engine house was rebuilt and fitted with replica machinery, as the original steam engine was removed in 1914. A visitor Centre was opened for public use, and the engine house is part of a tour. It is a site of tourism for Wrexham County Borough Council.
In 2004, the site was attacked by vandals, but this was repaired by the council in 2005.
Fatherhood was achieved on Father’s Day and will follow suit each day henceforth with a continuous movement where Fit Fathers commune for the benefit of their kids. We share and learn from one another to enhance positive experiences for our families, friends and community.
Naturally, Father’s Day in the Maryland, DC and Virginia area was ignited the “Fit Fathers” way for the 4th year in a row with exercise, laughter, dance, music and fun. We bring dads and father figures together annually to demonstrate the importance of being health conscious and leading by example through positive, nutritional choices. Hype for the event was built from engaging social media campaigns and coverage from Fox 5 DC, News Channel 8, CBS Radio, Radio One, SiriusXM, Black Enterprise and a host of other elite media outlets. Additionally, with $2,500 in prizes at stake for our fitness challenges, over 500 attendees came to the celebration ready for action which resulted in an eventful day.
