This line was built from Elvanfoot into the Lowther hills to two small mining settlements. The area was known for its lead mines, but silver and gold were also extracted here. Mining in the district long pre-dates railways. Traditionally lead went overland to the port at Leith, however the arrival of the railways in the area reduced this flow.

By Leadhills there were to the south the Wilson and Glengonnar pits, to the east an area where gold had been found, to the north the Wembley pit and the Susannah and Humby veins, and slightly further north smelters at Waterhead where the adits which drained the mining emptied into the Glengonnar Water. Tramways were used in the Leadhills mines.

To the west of Wanlockhead were the Bay mine (named for the Botany Bay colony) and Glencrieff mine. An surface tramway ran from Meadowfoot to Wanlockhead which pre-dated the railway. Originally it only ran as far as the town, but later it may have been modified to run to near the station.

Lead The Way

Capturing the feel of autumn in the yard. Taken from under the dogwood tree looking out toward the rarely-used gate. When under the tree the colors and branching seem like a stained glass window. The camera captures it in a more literal way, but still beautiful.

First settled in 1876, and incorporated in 1877, the City of Lead is a sparkling jewel nestled in the Northern Black Hills of South Dakota. Long the home of the great Homestake Mining Company, Lead boasts small town charm with large potential. The City of Lead was once the home for thousands of Homestake employees and their families and the town that they built has remained unchanged in many ways. The Homestake Mine has now been shut down but the Sanford Underground Laboratory at Homestake is in full development and promises a lively future for the community.

On Friday, September 30, 2016 Director of the White House Domestic Policy Council Cecilia Muñoz (AB '84) returns to the University of Michigan to chair a panel of public servants from rebounding Midwestern cities: Detroit, Michigan; Gary, Indiana; and Youngstown, Ohio. Each provides an example of the Obama Administration's "place-based" approach in action.

The panel featured communities embracing a collaborative eco-system, relying on partners across local, state and federal government, and other institutions to make progress on long-standing issues such as pervasive blight, crime, poor community trust in law enforcement, chronic homelessness and more.

Panelists: Abigail Beniston - Youngstown, Ohio; Kerry Duggan - The White House; Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson - Gary, Indiana; Arthur Jemison - Detroit, Michigan; Colonel Kevin C. Riley - Youngstown, Ohio

A lead fire mark issued by the Shropshire & North Wales Assurance Company, founded in 1837, so that their fire fighters could identify if the building was covered by them or not.

Prior to the establishment of public fire services, insurance companies maintained their own fire brigades. In order for your insurance company to extinguish a fire at your house, you had to have a metal plaque issued by the insurance company to indicate to its personnel that you were covered by them.

The only thing I can find out about this house is that it was built prior to the Civil War. The current owner said it has been vacant since the mid 90's. He simply does not have the money or will to restore this great piece of history.

The Lead Mine operated for a few decades after the 1840s with at times several hundred people living in accommodation provided by the mine owners. It is sited high in the Galloway Glens to the east of the small village of Carsphairn. There is currently a community archaeology project underway to record as much as possible of the site. There is a video of local farmer / historian Anna Campbell talking about the lead mine's history. Search for Woodhead Lead Mine.

I think this is the last one. *shakes fist at lens flare* Curse you!

Anyway, this is what's to the left of this pic for anyone curious. And no, I don't get why only this side of the mountain was all misty. Weird.

lead your eyes around this and I'm sure you will feel just as confused as I by this photograph.

Shot a bunch of images today slow shutter speed, this is one of the better shots we got. Coco will always out run Teddy, I try to get the two of them lined up for a pan, it is impossible to get a point of sharpness on both of them but I will keep trying. So much to concentrate on background, frame, I am trying to get the full reflection of the dogs in the water, yikes.

Lead aircraft in the flight of 31st Fighter Wing F-16s from Aviano AB, Italy arriving at RAF Mildenhall for exercise Cobra Warrior in September 2024. Interesting tail art although I cannot find any connection between the tail markings, seven red stars and the two squadrons assigned to the 31st. The 510th was a ground attack unit in Vietnam flying F-100s and the 555th did operate F-4s, but downed far more than 7 MiGs.
