New item...feels like a long time :)

coming at Color Me -purple round in 10th of this month.

More on website; milkteabunny.wordpress.com/2015/05/07/color-me-project-pu...

This is a 4-line dot-matrix LCD display - for the electronics buffs, it's a Hitachi HD44780 LCD in a sealed case with a USB connection. Its makers market it to PC gamers who want to see messages, alerts, etc. in the middle of their World Of Warcraft sessions, but I'm hoping to use it with my modified Linksys NSLU2 NAS device (now our home network server), to display system stats and the like without having to log in with a PC. (See notes for the specifics on what's in the box)

As usual, I tried to keep the project modular.

With the IMU in a small box at the end of a ribbon cable.

See the set.

Another shot of the LCD Thermometer. The probe on the end of the cable can actually go into water too which is pretty cool. Especially the $1 price tag!

A co-worker showed me an app on her smartphone which graphed how well she'd slept during the night. The phone went under her pillow and the built-in IMU sensed motion and considered that wakefulness.

I decided it would make a good Arduino project.

The shield just brings all the daughter-boards together.

Using a plastic storage box was nice: plenty of room and the plastic is easy to cut and drill.

this is the second of these watches that i have owned but can't remember for the life of me how to set it correctly!!!

Man oh man. I just got the widescreen 24" Dell 2405FPW LCD monitor -- the same display internally as the 23" Apple Cinema Display.

I can't believe it, but my Mac mini can drive the thing at its full native resolution via DVI, at 1920x1200! Even the built-in flash card reader and USB 2.0 hubs work fine.

I think we've officially made it to Ludicrous Size.

- Piazza Castelnuovo,Palermo.

The IMU rests under my pillow.

See the set.

This is a test circuit I cobbled up today to try out an Optrex DMF5005N graphic LCD display.

Here you can see how what is a nice neat ribbon cable / IDC arrangement on the display side becomes a horrible Cthulhu-beard of wires at the breadboard side. Each ribbon cable conductor is a stranded wire, i.e., a collection of hair-fine wires that would be hopeless to stick in a breadboard socket, so I tinned all of them with a drop of solder to stiffen them up. The result? The technique worked, but I can't really recommend it. In fact, I anti-recommend it. It's a lot of fiddly work to tin the wire ends, and it would be very easy to break them off in the breadboard. When I get past the driver prototyping and get around to using the display in a real project, I'll figure out a nicer way to interface it.

As you can see from the rat's nest on the breadboard, wiring a display like this takes a lot of signal paths - it used all but two of the I/O pins on the ATTiny861 MCU, so that chip is not a great choice for this LCD if you mean to do any chattering with any other peripherals. The data lines could be shared, but I don't like the kind of juggling you have to do for that if you can instead just use a chip with more I/O lines - and as it happens, I have several of them. I chose the Tiny861 for this test because it's a very easy chip to debug in-circuit using the Development Environment of Kings. That came in handy for this projecteen because my code did have a bug in it which the in-circuit debugger helped me track down. Yay!

My goal for today was to get this display to show a checkerboard pattern of 8x8 pixel squares. I pulled it off! Fancier stuff can come later - a large fraction of the effort for projects like this is to get the circuit to do anything at all, and once that's going, the rest is relatively easy.

I should've done a better job of obscuring the power LED. The LCD backlight turns off automatically.

See the set.

This is the spectrum from my LCD. There are four spectrums here -- the first shows "white", the next is blue, then green, then red. There seems to be some red and blue showing up in green, and green shows up in blue (but not red). I don't know if this is due to light leakage into the "off" pixels on the LCD or if it was designed to work like this and they're just using off colors to balance the colors correctly.

I'm a bit color blind and I've always found it easier to tell color on my CRT monitor, and I never really knew why. I'm guessing it's due to the narrow bands on the LCD. I have the same problem with flourescent lights -- certain colors will look weird. Flagstaff is near Fort Lowell observatory so the streetlights are some sort of special low light pollution lights. Everybody else could see normally but to me, my red car looked purple. I'm guessing it had some weird spectrum going on too.

A Navman Jupiter 12 GPS module (part no. TU35-D410-041) salvaged from a Phantom Tracker connected to an Arduino Duemilanove and a HD44780 compatible 4x20 LCD display that I had lying around. More details here.

GPS time is very accurate so I might get some of those huge seven segment LEDs to make a GPS clock.
