Subject in a DIY flash box - 4 sides of white poster board "box" propped on white cloth-covered table. Speedlite 430EX II bounced off ceiling of DIY box with Omni Bounce diffuser. Adjusted in LR2.

It's been pouring all day and I didn't have much time to think of a concept for today's picture, but I listened to Priscilla Ahn's "Rain" and took a picture standing in the rain.

My autofocus wasn't working very well so I had to manually focus this, which proved difficult. Although I'm looking at the LCD screen, this is the one of the only images I liked from today.

Liquid Crystal display's became a replacement for the bulkier CRT displays, and did not suffer from some of the problems that plasma TV's did

-Just for fun.

Finally got my hands on this psone lcd combo! It contains the psone (duh!) and a 5 inch lcd screen. Both audio and video quality of the screen are great.

I bought a couple of these on eBay for $1 each. Not sure I specifically have a use for them yet but definitely a cool thing to have in the bag of tricks!

If I end up having a display panel within the case it might be a good way to gauge room temperature/etc

Clamped. Basically a 3-board sandwich with the LCD in the middle, all compressed with 3 bolts. A matchstick acts as a fulcrum to make sure the contact is good and that the top and bottom boards remain parallel.

The beauty of this microscope is the ability to look at virtually anything that a standard teaching microscope could never look at. This is possible due to its open base which allows the microscope to be placed either directly on the material to be viewed or snapped onto its slide-holding base to look at slide-based samples.

Using this ability, I snapped a pic of my LCD monitor, showing each pixel is composed of varying amounts of red, green, and blue. If you notice, the vertical line is entirely blue, therefore the line is blue-colored. The cursor, a standard 3D Windows cursor called 3D Gold, shows up with varying amounts of red and green, but blue is virtually absent. Equal amounts of all three primary colors will yield the 256 grayscale colors, ranging from black to 25% gray to 50% gray to white.

The only downside is that the microscope's camera is only VGA, and thus only 256 colors are visible, out of the 16,777,216 (256 cubed) colors of the standard TrueColor color palette used by today's cameras and monitors.

Messing around today with a 20x4 character LCD display driven by SparkFun's serial backpack. The LCD gets its data from a 8051 microcontroller that runs our clock experiments. I'm thinking of installing the display, and other experiment bling, when we next upgrade (daddy needs more RAM!).

LCD display, close-up macro

Just a photo to show the LCD and keypad working. While I like the "white" LCD screens, they are difficult to photograph well.

I just love that sparkly background liquid-crystal displays have! A camera flash brings it right out, too.

I've long wanted to learn how to use graphic LCD modules. They're fairly cheap liquid-crystal displays designed to be used in a variety of devices, and it's very likely you've seen some of them just like this one used in equipment around town. For you other Salt Lakers out there, I'm pretty sure the gas pumps at the Costco on 3rd West and about 17th South use displays like the one pictured here.

Your laptop screen or desktop flat-panel is the great-great-great-etc. grandchild of the generation of displays this one belongs to. The heart of this one is a chip called the Toshiba T6963C and I think it was designed in the 1980s. Though this individual display was built in about 1998, it has a very 1980s feel to it - very slow drawing and capable only of black and white. T6963C-based displays can show some simple clunky pictures - I think you're required to make them display Tux the Linux Penguin at least once or they take away your geek ID card.

For me, these displays were demystified by the T6963C Rosetta Stone by Steve Lawther. Mr. Lawther, a helpful British guy - sorry, bloke, designed a straightforward test circuit for these displays around ten years ago. I get the sense that many if not most electronics hobbyists who have used displays based on the chip have started from his design. The test circuit is based on an obsolete MCU, so I ported his code for a newer chip and (as they say across the pond) Bob's your uncle.

His test code didn't include a checkerboard screen like this - that was my own contribution, because I like checkerboards.

I'm not sure what I want to use these displays for just yet, but I dig knowing that I can in fact get them to work.
