There have been times during the last three months that I thought this day would never arrive. I now have to rest for three weeks, (they said a few days before the op), but that will pass soon enough. Should get some walking done and back up to strength before the snow sets in. Thanks to everyone for the good wishes and presents. Much appreciated.

UI Health Care staff and Carver College of Medicine students traveled to the Iowa State Fair to engage children and adults in simulated laparoscopic surgery and interact with real human specimens. Medical student volunteers included Brandon Boldt, Austin Busy, Kelsey Hart, Cory Baughman, and Jenny Chiurco.

5th and 6th grade students from Hoover Elementary attended the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine for a day to experience hands-on activities with current medical students. The students got the chance to experience doing physical exam skills, make UV bracelets and learn about skin cancer awareness, casting and look at x-rays, check out human plastinated specimens and do some body mapping, as well as experience a "surgical center" and test out their visual-spatial skills on a laparoscopic trainer.

..at laparoscopic surgery. I don't know how they do it: I had just (and no more) managed to thread the lace through the right hand lower hole.

Twelve students from the UI Carver College of Medicine led kids in hands-on, interactive STEM activities at the Iowa Children's Museum on January 30th. Activities and opportunities to kids included trying their hand at performing a minimally invasive surgery on a laparoscopic surgical trainer, making a healthy snack at the nutrition station, making "blood soup" to see what blood is like in the human body, learning about organs in the body by seeing real human plastinated specimens and placing magnetic organs on a body, and finally seeing how casting is done to set bones when they are fractured and looking at x-rays.

University of Iowa Health Care is committed partners with formal and informal educators and community organizations across the state to advance STEM literacy to inspire the next generation of health care professionals and build a foundation for children to understanding their own health. In FY2014, more than 13,000 school age children were engaged in hands on learning provided by 260 faculty, staff and students.

Hiatal Hernia

What is Hiatal Hernia?

Hiatal Hernia

A hiatal hernia is a condition where the top of your stomach pushes through an opening in the diaphragm and into the chest cavity. The diaphragm is a thin muscle wall that separates the chest cavity from the abdomen. The opening in the diaphragm is where the esophagus and stomach join. There are different kinds of hernias and while most of them are not life-threatening, as they do not heal on their own, and surgery for hiatal hernia is the option to avoid complications. We provide the best hiatal hernia treatment in Pune with many happy faces.

Causes of Hiatal Hernia:

The most common cause of a hiatal hernia is an increase in pressure in the abdominal cavity. Your abdominal cavity is the space in the middle of your body that holds several organs, including the:

Lower part of the esophagus and stomach.

Small intestine, colon and rectum.

Coughing and Vomiting

Straining during a bowel movement.

Heavy lifting.

Physical strain.

Hiatal Hernia Symptoms:

A hiatal hernia always doesn’t show any symptoms, but when it does they are similar to the symptoms of GERD (Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease). Some of these are:

Heartburn

Bitter or sour taste in the back of the throat.

Bloating and belching.

Discomfort or pain in the stomach or esophagus.

Dr. Shrikant Kurhade clinic Provides advance laparoscopic hiatal hernia treatment in Pune by the best hernia specialist in Pune.

How is Laparoscopic hernia surgery performed?

Laparoscopic/Open Hernia repair surgery is the world’s most common surgical procedure. A Hernia surgery will help to relieve pain, return the hernia abdominal organs to their correct place and, strengthen the weak muscle area.

Hernia surgery can be done by:

Open hernia surgery – This is done under local or general anesthesia, an incision usually around 2.5 to 3 inches is made to the skin near hernia and the surgeon will push your hernia back into your abdomen. Then the incision will either stitched closed or much more commonly a mesh is placed over the hole and fixed using fine stitches.

Keyhole or laparoscopic hernia surgery – This is done under general anesthesia, smaller incisions are made to allow the surgeon to use a less invasive technique using various laparoscopic instruments including a tiny telescopic camera to repair the hernia. A mesh will then used to strengthen your abdominal wall.

Advantages of Laparoscopic hernia surgery:

Laparoscopic hernia surgery has several advantages compared with open hernia surgery.

Smaller scars

lesser pain and they heal quicker.

You get back to your normal activities early.

You may have less internal scarring.

In With traditional methods, you might spend a week or more in the hospital for hernia surgery, and your total recovery will take 4 to 8 weeks. If you have laparoscopic hernia surgery, you might stay only 2 nights in the hospital and recover in 2 or 3 weeks.

"Your forties, you grow a little pot belly, you grow another chin. The music starts to get too loud. One of your old girlfriends from high school becomes a grandmother. Fifties you have a minor surgery. You’ll call it a procedure, but it’s a surgery."

On the last day of January, I went in for a "procedure" to have a Spigelian hernia repaired. It was laparoscopic, so three small incisions instead of one big one. Pretty sure they put the camera/light through this incision. It stings the most of the three.

Laparoscopy can be used for diagnosis, treatment, or both. A diagnostic procedure can sometimes turn into treatment. Some reasons for diagnostic laparoscopy are unexplained pelvic pain, infertility or history of pelvic infection. The conditions which are normally diagnosed by Laparoscopy are endometriosis, uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts or tumours, ectopic pregnancy, pelvic abscess, pelvic adhesions, painful scar tissue, infertility, pelvic inflammatory disease and reproductive cancers.

Open Surgery is done by most of the gynaecologists but very few are trained to do laparoscopic procedures. Dr Meenakshi Goyal has been trained to do all the Gynae Laparoscopic Surgeries which is always a better option than the open surgery. Laparoscopic surgery requires a very small incision which is an area of concern for most of the women patients.

Now a Safer, More Precise option for

Removal of the Uterus –

Mini Robotic Laparoscopic Surgery

50-year-old Netra (name changed) was fed up with the lower abdominal pain & abnormal bleeding she had been tolerating for the past year, owing to multiple fibroids in her uterus. She had been postponing surgery as she was aware it was a major procedure and she dreaded going into surgery owing to a bad earlier experience.

Total removal of her uterus along with the ovaries was the best option at her age, especially since she had a history of 3 Caesarian section deliveries. While losing her uterus and ovaries didn’t really matter, as her family was complete, it nevertheless was an emotional decision to make as it meant a loss of her womanhood.

Luckily she was referred to Dr. Chaitanya Ganapule at Pearl women’s Hospital, who appreciated all her emotional as well as safety concerns. He then briefed her about a new technological innovation - mini Robotic Laparoscopic surgery under 3D imaging, which would substantially enhance her safety. This facility is a wonderful innovation that substantially increases precision and access with minimal invasion. The combination with 3-D imaging is cutting edge.

Consequently, recovery is faster and post-surgical discomfort is greatly reduced.

The procedure was carried out on 19th Sept 2022 and a happy and visibly relieved Netra was discharged after a 3-days stay in the hospital.

Laparoscopic surgery, the easy and comfortable surgery, is one of a kind. No bigger cuts and no lifetime scars, leaving indelible imprints on the patients’ bodies.

👨‍⚕️ Also known as keyhole surgery💉, This is one of those surgeries which patients are not scared of. The surgeon just needs to insert a long and thin hollow tube, namely, trocar through a small cut around the abdomen and then the surgeon can see on the monitor screen what’s happening inside.

💉Minimal side effects and no scar left behind.
